Why do we have Veteran dungeons?

Besides the monster helms and experience, all I`m after is the transmute crystals. Just did a Vet dungeon (Tempest Island) and got a blue geode. Seriously!

I guess because everything above blue would be exploitable.
How long does it take to run vFG1? 5 minutes? If each run would get you a purple geode...do the math. ;)

And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

I have so many geodes cluttering up several character’s inventory that I’ve started destroying them.

Once you’ve gotten the gear drops and achievements you want, there’s not much incentive to do them ever again, except maybe to help someone else get them.

As a 99% PVE player, take my advice and roll up some alts for 30 day campaigns in Cyrodiil.

Join and say LFG, follow the crown everywhere and pretend you're being useful. After about 5-6 keeps fall, you'll reach Campaign tier 1 which is an automatic 50 Transmute Crystals. It takes about an hour and as long as you don't look useless, most people won't notice.

Farming these in PVE is absolutely garbage. 1 hour in PVP will net you 50 every 30 days... and you can do it on however many alts you want... if you have 18 characters you could literally get 600 every 30 days.... there's no method in PVE even close to that efficient.

ZOS really coddled PVP on this one, so go join in - trust me, it will make your life so much better. Sure you have to wait for the campaigns to end, so about 30 days... but this is better than spending 100s of hours in PVE grinding them. I refused to do the PVP method a long time because I didn't want to play PVP... but trust me just give in and play that hour. It will change your life.

You really can't beat 50 crystals per character for an hour of work. The only difference is PVE pays out right away, PVP doesn't. But PVP pays out 10x more by a longshot.

Transmute system came well after vet dungeons.

Vet dungeons are end game dungeons. Higher difficulty than the normal ones. That is why they are there.

Alcast (and others) have a page explaining where to get geodes. https://alcasthq.com/eso-transmutation-system-guide/

The best way, as others have and will point out is getting the tier reward from 30 day PvP. I stack those on an alt and use the rest I get as they come in. Have tones.

I don't know if it still works, but in the past you could use them to transmutate crafted weapons to nirnhoned and decon them for a change on getting potent nirncrux.

The drop rate of geodes from dungeon bosses is pretty low, and you only get a blue (2-3 crystals) or rarely a purple one (3-4 crystals). They drop in:

    1) PvP
    - a gold geode from the first RFTW mail of the day (20h cooldown per account), can be anywhere from 4 to 20 crystals.
    - each subsequent RFTW mail has about a ~10% chance of containing another gold geode
    - BGs leaderboard give a geode containing 5 crystals for each type of game (3 geodes maximum) at the end of the week
    - Cyrodiil home campaign gives a 50 crystal geode at the end of the campaign if you did at least 20K AP (tier 1 rewards) on that one, it's relatively easy to do that on multiple characters, then collect the mails at the end of the month. For Tier 3 (>100K AP) you will also receive some purple jewelry.
    - If you are on the campaign leaderboard (first 100 players of your alliance) you receive another mail containing a geode and some gold jewelry

    2) PvE
    - vMA gives 4 crystals upon completion
    - vDSA and vBRP give 5 crystals upon completion
    - each trial quest gives 5 crystals per coffer (7 day cooldown, per character), regardless if it's normal or veteran
    - each pledge turned in gives either a blue (if 1 key) or purple (if 2 key) geode
    - a small chance from dungeon bosses, slightly higher on veteran
    - a purple geode from the daily normal or veteran random dungeon (20h cooldown per character)
    - chance for a blue geode from each subsequent random dungeon

Overal I'd say doing the trials once per week and Cyrodiil PvP on multiple characters it's the most reliable way to get transmute crystals.

Because they offer a greater challenge than normal.
Because gear drops in purple instead of blue.

There are a few reasons for running dungeons on veteran:
    - the monster head
    - more achievements, hence faster undaunted leveling
    - purple jewelry, since upgrade prices are rather high
    - to improve your gameplay, and test your (new) character - that's my main reason for doing veteran.

    Sound advice.

I'll also add if you stick with PvP somewhat, you'll also get Rewards for the Worthy after so much AP gain.
Once a day, you'll get a guaranteed gold geode with a chance to have between 4 and 25 crystals, and a random shot at another one in any RotW after that for the next 20 hour period before your next guaranteed one kicks in. It's a nice supplement while you're waiting for the end of the campaign.

And the AP you'll gain is actually useful if you like the Golden.
I myself actually started PvP for the very reason of having currency to spend in case a jewelry set I used came to the vendor, but I found killing other players came with a challenge and satisfaction that became quite addictive.
Doesn't happen for everyone, just something to keep in mind.

And if you go to Cyro, do the tutorial. You get enough AP to buy a starter supply of siege and will learn what siege to use for what purposes. Then you won't have to pretend to be useful. :) Using class and other abilities against players is part of AvAvA, but so is sieging outposts and castles, using defensive siege against players attacking keeps held by your faction, and repairing keeps after battles. A big part of getting started is figuring out how you can be most useful given your current gear and abilities.

What might be important to note here:
It's the first RftW mail that you open on a day.
You do not need to have earned them that day. Whether there is a geode in the box or not, is determined when you open the box, not when you get it in the mail.
So you can earn, for instance, a few RftW mails on Monday and just have them wait in your mail, and open one box each day, and get a geode.
Not useful if you PvP a lot, but if you do it only now and then, you can maximise your transmute gain that way.

Once geodes are in your inventory, you can't move them. But both ROTW and end of campaign geodes come in the mail, so you just retrieve the geode on the character of your choice.

Once you retrieve them from the in-game mail with a certain character, the geodes are character bound and must remain in that character's inventory until you "use" them. The transmute crystals are account wide and can be used by any character on your account. Transmuted items are account bound, not character bound, and can be shared freely between your characters through your personal bank, like any other bound items.

Because they are more fun once you’ve done the story and are familiar with both the dungeon and how to play your character! :)

I DO wish there were better PvE sources of transmute crystals, I agree. I try but I don’t think my doing PvP benefits anyone (other than I need the Alliance skill lines and transmute crystals). I should probably have an entirely different build to not be just a liability and I never have any idea what I should be doing...
