Is anyone actually surprised this happened (again)?

Not surprised it happened, just by how fast and clearly unprepared for it ZoS was.

Surprised that it went base over apex? No.

The speed with which it all went wrong was unprecedented though, before it started I'd been over-optimistic and was betting on a few more hours before group finder borked.

Not surprised at all. Was expecting it and never bought their lies about a "fixed" dungeon finder.

I've said it before in another thread. How can you code a new group finder to avoid issues when you have no idea how to fix the old one.

Nope. In fact I won a guild bet about what would happen on this. I was the one who got closest as to how soon PC/EU would have its melt down and I was the only one who predicted they'd cancel. (Though I did think it'd take them at least a day to get to that point.)
I can't recall if it was Gina or Sarah who said it, but one of them stated during the Witch event that the rewriting of the activity finder had revealed some issues with the underlying structure of the database and how information was retried and I simply couldn't see how something that fundamental could be fixed in this short time span to a good enough degree that everything wouldn't come apart at the seams the moment the event began and players flocked to the dungeon finder.

So no, not in the least.

With zos track record, think it's safe to say a majority of players were not surprised they took this down

I’ll be surprised if the queue actually work, the bg queue still not working now after 2 weeks on ps4 na, and they don’t even have a word on it, just plain ignoring it. I’m sure their coder have no fix and not able to code something that works than previous version.

I don't think anyone's really surprised, there'd be more angry threads if that was the case... my impression is tiredness, disappointment, and maybe a dash of secret relief, because that event was the cherry on top of a 'it's too much' cake.

I expected the usual primetime meltdown - bad on NA and awful on EU.

I didn't expect the EU meltdown to happen in the first hour. That's a whole new standard of awful.

I don't think they lie, but given the continued performance issues, and absolute predictability of the current fiasco, you'd think someone in upper management would seriously question competence. This is just getting silly. If I were responsible for the ongoing development I would be hiding in a closet right now.

They very clearly do not care to take care of their game or provide any actual value for the money they earn.

    It's a cash grab

    Isn't that right @ZOS_GinaBruno

Ok, this is off topic and irrelevant....but it's Bjorked. The term comes from a botched supreme court justice nomination that went wildly off course. It's a mans name, not just a term that's worked its way into our lexicon.

DING! Give the man a prize, because he nailed the landing.

The solution to this issue is to stop skimping on servers. We keep paying full price while ZOS puts it's game on servers built in the 1980's.

I am surprised everyday when stuff actually works. Electrons going through transistors and substrate, being converted into a digital signal, then getting shot through miles and miles of glass....I'm always surprised this sh*% actually works.

    Not in the slightest.

To the extent that I don’t know anyone who thought the event would run for an hour, let alone 4 days.

If we are to take a tiny positive from this, it’s that the event collapsed because too many players wanted to take part.

And that the knock on effect of this will be felt by all players, including all the friends of all the people who work at ZOS. It will be impossible for anyone there to deny to need for urgent action to address this issue.

ZOS need to take their heads out of a “gradual failure” mentality, which essentially imagines the audience declining over time with minimal investment in anything other than a bit of content, to “planning for success” where they actively work to improve the technology behind the game.

They need to do this fast because, make no mistake, this is an utter disaster for them. An emperor’s new clothes moment where they are caught parading around with a game that simply can’t deliver. What they do now will define how the game is perceived and they need to get it right.

Because if they don’t, their gradual failure will become a total collapse.
