Chill out. He doesn’t know so don’t shout at him.

The plot armour is one solution; another is ‘magick’; or a mage/god/daedra/whatever did it; or Varen pushed him aside at the last moment.

I think its the beard. The beard is a sentient being that is in a symbiotic relationship with Sai and wasn’t happy that it was going yo die too so did some ‘beard woo’ and sorted things out.

Obviously, Alkosh went full Jill and corrected the time line. Or Naar went full Jill. Those who know, know.

I like the fact that Sai doesn’t know and that no explanation is provided..

It doesn’t mean there isn’t an explanation.

I like some elements of vagueness. I like the idea that Dragonbreaks explain why my playthrough of Skyrim and your playthrough of Skyrim can be totally different, yet some point in Tamriel’s future will be identical.

    It’s part of the fun.

Sai clearly has some heavy back-up. I always wondered if he might be Azura's champion in the same way that Darien was Meridia's champion.

I find it disturbing he doesn't recognize me whatsoever after I rescued him from Coldharbour. "You look like a capable fighter" or whatever... meh
As I was going out one day,
My head fell off and rolled away.
And when I saw that it was gone,
I picked it up and put it on.

Because ZOS really wanted you to sacrifice Varen but gave you a choice anyway just because.

    Akatosh spit him back out.

I'd go so far as to suggest that he's Dragonborn, sent back to rebuild the Dragonguard and reel in Kaalgrontiid. Daddy Aka might be upset his kids are making a mess of Tamriel again.

Otherwise, he's been fanboying hard for Stendarr, the god of mercy. Maybe he was actually showing mercy for once, but I'm unsure how the Aedra solve disputes like this.

Stendarr: Dude! That's my Sai you just gobbled up, give him back!
Aka: No-uh! I already doled out my powers to this other mortal for his soul. Besides, I already licked him, I'm sure you don't want him back.
Stendarr: Yes I do, I had first dibs! MINE MINE MINE!!
Aka: Uh, fine. You can play with him for a while longer. Just give him back when you are done. Washed.
Alandrol Sul: He's making another Numidium?!?
Vivec: Worse, buddy. They're buying it.

The gods needed someone to deliver wooden dialogue, and no one does it better than Sai Sahan.

I believe that Meridia has brought Sai back in an attempt to ingratiate herself with the vestige as part of a larger plot to make the Vestige her champion and replace the Golden Knight.

At the end of the main quest in the base game, Meridia sends you to experience the other alliance's questlines, ostensibly to "fully comprehend what is at stake." However, based on a letter found in Betnikh, the events of the three alliances' questlines happen roughly contemporaneously. Meridia does not merely alter where we ended up when we left Coldharbour, creating a domino effect whereby we become a trusted ally of the alliance's leader, but deliberately inserts us into significant events.

We know that Meridia is searching for a new champion. It is my belief that Meridia intends to make us, the Vestige, into her new champion, and, as a token of her grace, she has shaped events to make us a great hero. Further, she has brought back a deceased friend from our past to make us feel indebted to her.

We know from Molag Bal's quests in Oblivion and Skyrim, and Sheogorath's treatment of Dyus in the Shivering Isles, that Daedric Princes hold power over life and death, and can bring mortals back from the dead or prevent them from dying.

This theory is sound enough based on recent content additions that have placed Meridia in a negative light (for example, the Depths of Malatar dungeon) and would be workable if Meridia is a villain in future content, as it would only require an additional line of dialogue from Meridia or another character explaining what she has done if you did not sacrifice the Prophet (the Prophet dies offscreen by the end of Orsinium if you did not sacrifice him).

I gleefully ripped his soul out (he’s so basic he clearly didn’t notice) and I’ll do it again to rob him of that new fancy armor he’s got.

    The answer:

They don't know. In the midst of producing the expansion and messing up combat, they forgot to develop a good answer. Worse, they are afraid to make one up, because the collective fan base has a better handle on the lore than the employees. Chances are good that any answer they make up will get swatted down by someone who can contradict it with something from an earlier game.

P.S. I threw Lyris under the bus in the hope of never seeing her again; I sure hope she doesn't show up in Skyrim.
