Are there Australian servers?

A friend is suggesting I play ESO again, though my most recent memories of the game were the painful latency from living in Australia and connecting to an American server to play - much like we used to do with 'that other MMO with the orcs' (which need not be named) before we had the Oceanic servers in Sydney to connect to.

Are there any Australian-based servers for this game, or am I gonna face the prospect of lagging hard the entire time?

To any Aussies reading this: How much is latency likely to affect my game? I figure PvP is completely out, but how should I expect to fare in PvE?

Latency took a big dive in the last two patches - ping averages of 300 became 350, then 400, then 450. Realistically PvP is a massive handicap at 300+, while vet trials become dicey at 400+.

There's a massive forum thread on this already, and ZOS, despite the angst etc... is doing something about it - although the pace is glacial. Some of this seems to be due to the DDOS routing that affects those outside of the US, while the other reality is that network troubleshooting on an inter-continental basis is a... difficult.. proposition at the best of times, let alone in a minority market where corporate economics dictate this isn't going to be a priority.

What myself and many other Australian players I know of do is use Mudfish now (some have also had good results with Battleping) - this puts me back down to an average of 250ms. It's competitive enough that in pvp the only builds I realistically worry about are *good or higher* Dizzy Swingers from the US or Europe - US generally has around 70 ping and a French dude told me the other day he had 104 ping. And really the problem with Dizzy isn't as much the ping differential as it is the completely unfair animation lock / cc break which allows 1 Dizzy to become 2 Dizzies + Beserker + Execute in the time it take your character to land, and that problem is not a ping thing (and there's separate forum threads for that anyway XD ).

It sucks we have to essentially pay for a VPN to play, so keep the pressure on ZOS going - the placid customer is the customer that gets no effort back - but on the bright side, a $10 Mudfish pre-paid account can be configured to in-game data use only, and should last about 4 - 5 months.

So yes, we can forum whine but your play experience and sanity is worth more than 8.33 cents a day.

And yes, you can kick ass in pvp ^^ hope to see you in there!

You're going to see some severe lag and may see frequent disconnects.

46 pages worth of replies from a year-old post does not inspire confidence, but thankyou for the link. :-)

Ty for the advice also, Halcyon_blue + Starkerealm.

I might still give ESO a shot for a little bit; though I'll probably pick a different class than the Necromancer healer I was looking at trying.
Turns out the Necro requires an expansion which is like $90 (I don't have Morrowind and the other one), and if the latency + animation-locking is even half as bad as it sounds then perhaps its best that I avoid purchasing stuff for a game that might not be playable.

Again, thankyou for the heads-up. :-)

You don't need to buy Morrowind or Summerset if you're subscribing. You miss out on Morrowind's Warden (but you can get that from the store). But, if you have ESO+ you get access to both zones.

Its worth a shot, I have no problem with anything other than some of the newer DLC trials and really busy cyrodil, everything else is smooth

I’ve had the first real upturn in performance from here in Sydney in this game since it was released. It’s still an absolute abysmal laggy mess which ZOS should be reprimanded (joking, kind of) for charging full price in Australia due to the absolute unplayable state the game is normally in down here. But the crashes are slightly less frequent, I mean microscopically less frequent.

    Hey Kittenpox,

ESO do a number of play for free events usually timed for the major game conventions. If you’re curious but not sure if you should fork out, they would be good to do.

It’s a great game with many flaws, none of which are helped by their poor server structure which doesn’t perform well with even modest crowds of players.. However, they are promising some technical improvements over the next 12 months which will hopefully improve things.
