When is looting weapons/armor on racks worth it?

It seems like weapons I get on the racks around the world don't do much to increase my skill when deconstructing them. Is that accurate?

Are they ever worth collecting?

Only in the tutorial area. Very rarely one will be green improved. Otherwise they are all just decoration for the game world. To increase your skill faster you want to look for intricate trait items or items made by other characters. Yes even your own other character.

I am not talking about stealing them. I mean the ones that can be freely collected.

Anything I pick up with a 0 gold value is an immediate Destroy. You get almost no crafting inspiration or mats from gear like that.

My guess is they exist to fill up bots' bags with worthless garbage. Beyond that, they're just part of the scenery and better left where you found them.

When you start to steal a bunch and deconstruct the gear for materials and crafting experience, you'll initially get a fair amount of materials and crafting experience. As you do it more, however, it will reduce down to fewer mats and exp, and eventually no mats and effectively no exp. It will reset back to giving the initial amount, but in order for it to do that you need to spend time ingame doing something other than stealing and deconning.

I do this all the time when leveling crafting on alts. It works with just looting places like Coldharbour as well, if you're not into the whole "might get caught for stealing" thing.

Very, very early on they can be deconned for some gain. But that is short-lived. There really is no reason to loot those things unless you are a fanatic and need to get that green shadowhide belt to decon.

Sadly they have no purpose what-so-ever besides being a prop in the game world ...

Yeah they're usually crap. Just ignore them or trash them. I don't understand why the developers chose to make their only real purpose to fill up your inventory faster, which is basically all they're good for.

I unfortunately suspected this. I know some things I get do help my research, but I think those are white mob drops rather than the stuff I picked up. I will have to train my "shiny, pick up!" urge now it seems since bag space is at a constant premium, even though I have ESO+ and a maxed banker. (And I can dump into the bank on the run, though not when it is full.)
