Psijic quest line design is an abomination

@Inaya @jhall03 What do you guys do with your lives that 3 to 6 wasted hours are ''nothing''. Why do you play, if not to unwind ? Do you have family lives ?!

@Itacira Yes I have family and a full-time job; You sound presumptuous there. And that's all you need to know about my personal life.

My opinion is basing the Psijic grind in comparison to the other grinds. Other guild grinds take much longer. Hence the reason I don't know why people complain about this 3-4 hour grind. And on top of that, you start getting fun skills to use after the first 30 minutes so it doesn't have to be done in one sitting.

I'm sorry that this sounded presumptuous but since you're not the first person to actually comment on how relatively "quick" some in game activities that actually take hours are, I'm trying to understand where it comes from. Other than "back in my days" snobbery.

In a game with no class change where one has no choice but to roll new characters and start from scratch in order to experience new class content, it seems absurd to me that so much content relies on this kind of repetitive bland questlines. Especially a game that, that aside, usually has very good stories that make running around on quests MEANINGFUL most of the time.

Now, if the Psijic grind is better than the others, then all the better, but does that make this kind of POINTLESS grind entertaining ? Not really. "Could be worse" isn't an acceptable measure of an activity's quality to me.

I'm not against grind as a whole, of course. That's the bread and butter of long lasting online games such as this. Grinding for gear ? ok to me, specially since I can use the bank to equip a toon with gear I farmed on another char'. Seems balanced, seems fair. You do the work, you're rewarded for it. And if you don't have time for it you have alternatives, such as buying it from another player. And I insist on the "time" factor of it because as I said I've read time and again on forums involving the TESO community that so and so thing is "easy don't be lazy go and work for it it only takes x hours". I apologize that I came too strong at you if that's not an attitude you support but your words echoed this to me. As did @Inaya 's, and I apologize equally to you if I misinterpreted. Otherwise, my saltiness will equal yours, I suppose, and we'll stay at that.

As players we have to stop accepting inane mechanics such a these, void of meaning, that are only in the game to make it last artificially longer while not providing anything new or exciting to the player. The game needs content to last, of course : it's up to us, players, to remind developpers not to forget the entertainment aspect of it when they do.

And if you don't see an issue in the grind, good for you. I'm glad you're enjoying yourself. It's a non-issue for you. That doesn't make it any less of an issue to other people, and any less of an actually important one to point out to the devs.

EDIT: fixing typos here and there

@Itacira Meh it's hard to get the tone of a persons opinion through something typed so I too apologize if I misinterpreted your misinterpretation lol.

For me it wasn't pointless or a waste of time because of the reward AND because I used the running around to farm mats, do crafting surveys, treasure chests, discover wayshrines I didn't have, gather lore books etc in areas I hadn't spent much time in. I can see where it would be really boring without throwing in these other activities. "Quick" is a measure of time that is definitely defined much differently by everyone. In this case for me, I meant quick or not as bad because unlike the mage and thief lines I'm done with psjiic now. In retrospect the continuous hours to complete seems quick as opposed to the ongoing time spent with the other two.

I must also tell you that I started my MMO life in FFXI where you can't even pass level 49 without a LONG series of quests to "limit break" and max level 75 can only be accomplished by farming an item and then beating "Matt". If you lose you refarm the item and try again. Cutting my teeth on that makes ANY other grind seem like a bed of roses.

Anyway, I'm a huge proponent of everyone playing the way they want but I also realize that this is a very difficult balance for game developers. Too far in either direction and a large group of people are alienated as opposed to having some unhappy from both sides lol. (You can never make everyone happy). There are things I realize I may never have because I hate PVP but that doesn't mean I want the game to change anything that makes PVP enjoyable to PVP'ers. I guess I'm just saying that not everything is for everyone and that's ok, it shouldn't be. People who do the activity SHOULD be rewarded for it and if it's something I hate, don't have time for or just don't think it worth the investment I'm ok with the reward being out of my reach.

First of all, more than a year after launch, and almost a year and a half after this hit PTS , it seems a little late to complain about this.

Fortunately you will likely be able to buy the skill line in the crown store in less than a year.

Besides that. The questing is about the dialogue as that skull is a hoot and it does not take all that long to complete. Whoever wrote the skulls dialogue did a great job. Yes, I am aware some could care less about dialogue and just things done with quickly but they just need to deal.

The first few times hearing the skull was enjoyable, but after that I got annoyed really quickly by the heavy UK accent and the overall really low bar as far as humor goes.

I did hope there would be a redeeming factor once I reached the end of the quest line, but it was just "This happened to the item the whole quest line was about, this is the NPC who's responsible, fight said NPC, the end".

I've seen more story depth from your standard 2D-side scroll hero mobile game.

I just consider this a part of a new character build, and try to combine with other guild and skill grind activities. While doing this questlines, I grab skyshards for skill points, lore books for mages guild, hit active dolmens for fighters guild, steal for thieves guild, etc. grinding them all at the same time makes it a little less tedious for me. I can’t say that approach works for others, just me.

It's only bad if you have a slow mount and/or minimal wayshrines discovered. Otherwise, it literally takes 3-4 hours.

Why do so many people complain about this?

Because it's phoned-in trash. 'Go here, close these portals. Go there, close those portals. Go here, close these portals'.

It's stupid and boring, and in that 'only 3-4 hours', they could have made anything else. Literally anything else.

It could have been fun or interesting. It could have been engaging. Heck, it could have been four hours of listening to the Augur chatter, which would have been far more entertaining.

But no. They deliberately made it forgettable and stupid, and that's the entire mid-section of what otherwise began and ended as an interesting questline.

If they chopped it out altogether, they'd do nothing but improve the whole thing.

The running around part isn't what makes it annoying or obnoxious. Lots of quests in the game have us run around all over hither and thither, and that's fine. The running around part should have and could have been much more entertaining.

    But no. Nope.

The part that makes me giggle is that some of you on this thread are leaping to the defense of that, making excuses for it and proffering forth ever-so-helpful ways to WATCH FREAKING TV WHILE DOING IT.

Guess some of ya never figured out that if your mode of entertainment is so boring that you have to watch TV to be entertained while playing it, you're playing a sucky, boring game, huh?

Let me say that again for the deaf jesters in the back that don't hear anything until someone hits them so hard with it they get knocked out a window.

IF YOUR GAME IS SO BORING THAT YOU HAVE TO WATCH TV TO BE ENTERTAINED WHILE YOU'RE PLAYING IT, YOU'RE PLAYING A SUCKY, BORING GAME.

I do not want to have to watch TV in order to make an entire questline more palatable by literally paying minimal attention to it and just 'powering through', and making a questline so insufferably dull that it can both be done while watching Netflix and SHOULD be done while watching Netflix lest you get so bored you fall asleep is NOT ACCEPTABLE QUEST DESIGN.

That isn't acceptable design for any form of entertainment, and it could not be more clear that whoever was responsible for it didn't care, didn't try, phoned it in and might as well have slapped a big ol' troll face on it, because that's what they accomplished.

They trolled us all. The only discussion there is to be had is in determining whether it was through incompetence or laziness.

ZOS like making unfun content. I genuinely don't understand it.

Transmute crystals are another great example. Literally noone likes it, you HAVE to do it, it has integrated mechanical limits requiring huge amounts of time, its do it separately for every character and while its better than the old system, it now just sticks out as a sore thumb. People hate it, but they need to do it.

I really appreciate the new Skyshard purchase option. Lets hope for more of these...

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is the death of good game design.

Why design fun content that people will play (Keeping the game alive), when people can play less, but pay more. And ASK for the ability to do so.

I found it rather boring on my first run through, I'm not looking forward to running through it again on another character. That said, there are some useful active and passive abilities that I know I will want for some of my other characters so I will force myself to do it again.

@Chadak I genuinely don't understand this defensive attitude some player have towards the game sometimes.

In another post in this forum I actually found myself wondering if it wasn't out of frustration at other issues that they deem more important, and that the devs don't fix. Thus, when different players point out a wider variety of issues, the defensive players have a kneejerk reaction of "DON'T TAKE THE DEVS TIME AWAY FROM FIXING THE REAL PROBLEMS".

And while I can understand their frustration (still waiting on a class change token, don't care that ZOS purportedly said they'd "never do it", they made a necromancer class in reaction to popular demand so I'll keep on hoping all the way to my character's grave) that does not mean they get to take it out on other players.

And then there's the "back in the days I had to walk barefoot in the snow uphill both ways" crowd that feeds of schadenfreude. Instead of realizing that an experience was unpleasant and attempting to change that, they want other people to experience it too because I DID IT SO NOW IT'S YOUR TURN.

And those that forget that it's a GAME. " Life doesn't hand you everything for free you have to WORK FOR IT."

Actually, I'd love to do the quest line - without messing about with Valsiren, the Undercroft, and whatshisface. That's the part I just have no use for.

Just let me pick up the quest line from Celarus - I can get to Artaeum without messing about with Valsiren. The quest line is fun for me - but I do NOT want to mess with Valsiren and the sload crap.

Are you sure you need to talk with Valsiren before talking to Celarus, if you can already get to Artaeum?

The quest info at UESP doesn't mention any prerequisites, just that Celarus is the quest giver, assuming you can get to Artaeum.

Disclaimer: I haven't tried picking up the quest on another character, although I have no issues getting to Artaeum.

Well, it does make sense logically, she's the one that gets you to Artaeum. It would be nice if you could just show up and find the quest giver but that might require alternate dialogue.

The Mages Guild grind is probably worse but honestly that's the only grind in the game more boring and mindless than the Psijic quests. I was actually looking forward to meeting the Psijic Order because they were so mysterious and what I got was this lazy half-arsed excuse for a quest line.

    __________________________Backstories:_________________________

Ras Kalik the Vestige, a renown Redguard warrior; He has been blessed to save Tamriel from Molag Bal’s destructive Planemeld while reuniting the Five Companions. His further accomplishments after defeating Molag Bal, has been to stop the destruction of Morrowind, the Clockwork City, return order to the isle of Summerset and create a new king in Wrothgar and a queen in Elsywer. These events have made him a living legend and continue to lead him into new adventures throughout Tamriel, as well as into the hearts of many ladies including the Elf Queen, Aryenn. Over many years of adventurous travels, Ras Kalik had become a loner, until he re-visited his homeland of Alik'r.

Alik'r and it's cities were overrun by the undead Ra-Netu and therefore he made an allegiance with Alik'r's own Ash'abah tribe. These Ash'abah with his help, cleansed the city of Sentinel in Alik'r desert and it's surrounding areas of the undead brought to life by the Withered Hand. After rescuing Sentinel from the undead zombies, King Fahara’jad’s personal bodyguard the Goliath of Hammerfell, who was given this name by Imperials in the region; was asked to assist the tribe after learning of the defeat of the Withered Hand to the Ash'abah. Kalik promised Goliath he would task him with fighting living enemies on the battlefield if he so desired. Goliath being a Yokudan warrior wields a massive sword in respect to the Ansei, a gift given by the Imperial, Cinan Tharn. Not many soldiers are able to wield double two handed weapons, but Goliath loves to get up and personal in a fight, so he also carries a giant maul, both weapons laced with magical flames.

Jux Blackheart is a master thief that masquerades as a Bard at the Sisters of the Sands inn, with his younger sidekick Lucky Hunch for pilfering and gambling during this time. Jux was known to infiltrate any towns bank vault he came across and even delved into Ayelid ruins without detection. Kalik can vividly recall the night he met the famed thief. Jux found himself rummaging thru a slightly inebriated Kalik’s pocket for too long, on a full-mooned night and because of his greed and the glimmer of his golden armor in the moonlight. He lost his left pinky fingertip as a lesson! But in return, he gained a new friend, as it was his first time since a child being caught red-handed...

Upon arrival back in the Alik'r after many moons of adventuring, Ras Kalik ventures to Bergama. Visiting The Winking Jackal, he runs into Jux Blackheart, who introduces him to the coin game Crowns vs Forebearers (Heads vs Tails) and Golden Dwemer (RBG).... Jux constantly takes gold from the unfortunate thru theft or gambling, his biggest gambling victim is actually his partner in crime known as Lucky Hunch the Gambler. Lucky doesn't mind losing any gold coins to Jux... as Jux saved him from Altmer slavers in Summerset, by stealing a key and sending him on a boat to the mainland years prior. Lucky spent years in slavery with Khajiits in Summerset and picked up the art of subterfuge, using illusion magic disguises and stealing there.

Kaotik Von’Daemon an outcast, and a half-caste between a Breton mother and a Redguard father. Kaotik become a pariah due to his conjuration of Daedra pets. He was taught healing magic during his childhood years by his Breton mother. His father due to Redguard customs exiled him from the desert, sending him by wagon caravan to be a soldier in the war in Cyrodiil. He happened to meet Kalik while traveling from Alik'r, during this long caravan ride the caravan he was in was ambushed in Bangkorai by a group of bandits. Kalik by chance was also traveling thru this area on his Auridon Warhorse (which was bestowed to him by his friend, Darien Gautier). During this ambush, Kalik was able to rescue five hostages from the bandits. Kaotik was the first rescued, and Ras Kalik also recruited him to be in the Ash'abah tribe. These core Ash'abah tribesmen may never be seen together in travel as they partake in their own adventures but they always know what each other is doing; as they frequent a hideout in northern Bankorai. Their hideout an old Orc castle ruin, is kept watch by Nuzhimeh and she passes messages written between them, and frequently they also enjoy her company and her bed.

The other men rescued were a Dunmer banker, an Imperial mercenary and two other soldiers, an Imperial and a Breton Knight, stating proudly he was an Akavir descendent. One of the Imperials, Cinan, claimed to be related to Abnur Tharn the Battlemage of the Imperial Elder Council (One of Ras Kalik's mentors in the Five Companions). Cinan Tharn was really Abnur's drunkard treasure hunting illegitimate son. He was caught smuggling artifacts out of the Ayleid ruins in Cyrodiil and the elder of the two Imperials was Tyrus Septim a retired Imperial navy battle-mage (now a Lycan mercenary living in the city of Rimmen) and guard to the Tharn family. As much as Abnur Tharn hated his half-sister Euraxia, he dislikes his bas†ard son Cinan more. Tyrus now a ruffian and privateer had been paid by Abnur Tharn to watch over Cinan as much as possible. Cinan Tharn a drunkard, loves to drink at least a quarter barrel of Nord mead before he raids various delves and dungeons for relics to sell on the black market. Cinan also plans to one day, run an illegal gambling ring... which he thinks will net him more gold for his wares.

The Dunmer captive shackled to the Imperials looked familiar to Kalik from his time in Morrowind.... and he recognized him as Tythis Andromo a House Telvanni slave-owner and banker from Vvardenfell. During a rough interrogation to Tythis, Ras Kalik learnt why the bandits accosted him. The racist Dunmer was providing slaves as soldiers for the Three Banner War. The bandits were trying to negotiate a lucrative ransom for Andromo and the Imperials.... Kalik did not need any of this gold and he could never set Tythis free as he did with the two Imperial soldiers. His past involvement with slavery and war crimes, made Kalik's blood boil. He chose not to execute Tythis, as he figured the worse punishment for this former rich and opulent slave owner, is to now be an imprisoned servant for Ras Kalik and the tribe.

Herzog Zwei the Genesis a reknown Imperial/Akavirri battle-mage. His roots going back to Akavir through his mother’s bloodline. (His mother is descended from the Akaviri, through Versidue-Shae, and his Imperial father met her in Hakoshae, while traveling) Herzog earned the nickname "the Genesis" from his father as a child, as he was his mother's first born child, and last, as she tragically died in child-birth.

Herzog was seeking to purchase an artifact from Cinan Tharn, before their capture and was meeting Tyrus while in Rimmen, who introduced him to Cinan. This artifact being the Ayelid artifact; the sword Sinweaver. After their rescue and the exchange of gold to Cinan for the sword he decided to slip away before Ras Kalik could question who he was, and why the Akavir descendant really wanted that sword. Herzog was headed to Nagastani — An Ayleid ruin in eastern Cyrodiil. He had read in scrolls that the Sword would give him magical powers to meet his mothers spirit, if he performed an Ayleid ritual at an old shrine hidden there. Equipped with the artifact sword, he was off to start his own adventure but Ras Kalik, did indeed notice the sword however and instead sent a letter to Jux Blackheart (whom also was interested in Ayleid treasures), to attempt to find Herzog and acquire the sword. (*Azani Blackheart in Elder Scroll's Oblivion is Jux's descendant some 747 years later)

And so the Redguard, Imperial and Akaviri men parted ways ... While Ras Kalik went off to Elsweyr to encounter the latest threat to Tamriel, with Abnur Tharn and Sai Sahan - - DRAGONS!! Little did Ras Kalik know a few people were awaiting him in Senchal besides Sai. A necromancer survived his attack on the Withered Hand, while in Alik'r. The necromancer known as Auriek Siet'ka is also following him to the land of the Khajiits and Cacique the Sage of Ius a Shaman mystic who has become attuned spiritually with Tu'whacca (a Redguard God) and Ius (the Animal God), after being burned severely by the escaped dragons in Elsywer, is awaiting his arrival also. Aurik is a soldier of the Daggerfall Covenant that was introduced to necromancy while in the military, even though this magicka art is not spoken of openly by most of the Military leaders. He came to Alik'r and worked with the Withered Hand before Ras Kalik intervened on their plans. After the defeat of the Withered Hand, he aligned with the Worm Cult, and is constantly adapting and perfecting his necromantic arts.

After his journey to Rimmen, Kalik heads south to Senchal, in the southern regions of Elyswer. This new adventure will also put him on a path to meet a strange Redguard man. The stranger which was infected with an untreated Peyrite disease and also was the exiled from the Order of the New Moon cult, due to his sickness. He originally joined the cult to worship Laatvulon, the green dragon, mistakenly thinking it was the Daedric prince Peyrite. This confused and suffering cultist is known as Tsar al-Bomba and he is on a path to spread the disease. He was originally infected in Orccrest while recruiting members there. Can Ras Kalik and the shaman Cacique cure this poor soul, only time will tell. Little does Tsar al-Bomba know, that his infection is tied to Vampirism, and eventually the desire for blood will take over his mind. Senchal also offers Kalik his latest love interest... Aeliah. Whom he fondly led thru battles with the Dragonguard.

After the trek thru the heat, tropical and desert climate of Northern and Southern Elyswer, Ras Kalik heads north to the cold mountain range of Skyrim. His companion friend Lyris beckons for him with a letter sent by crow...

Movárth Piquine - a former vampire hunter (now infected), within the Fighter's Guild (and a secretive necromancer) was in Skyrim working with the Morthaal Guard. On a patrol mission he was caught in Frewien's ice curse outside of Morthaal with the frozen undead. Movárth's vampiric infection kept him from becoming an undead minion to the curse. He was able to use necromantic ice-magic to encase himself safely until he was freed with Freiwen, when the Vestige Ras Kalik broke the curse.

Uri Ice-Heart - brother of Urfon Ice-Heart. The twin sons of Atli and Oljourn Ice-Heart. The Ice-Heart family are originally from Markarth but now reside on the Jerall Mountain range near Cyrodiil, with their younger sister Araki. The twins had joined the Winterborn Reachmen while living in Markarth. Urfon pushed west to Orsinium with the Winterborn Clan, leaving his family behind. Uri stayed behind with his parents and sister to live in the family cabin for safety, avoiding the Vampire plague infiltrating the Reach. After news reaches him and he hears of Urfon's death... Uri leaves and heads home and is seeking vengeance. Meanwhile, his sister has also moved on to Windhelm to join the Fighter's guild. He will visit his sister, once before going to seek vengeance and she will craft him armor mixed with ice, called Stalhrim armor. Uri fearing death, after his brother's passing, falls victim to the convincing talk of Movárth at a Nordic tavern, and will also becomes a vampire.

I like it better than any of the other ones honestly, a lazy sunday afternoon cleared it. Not like undaunted or thieves/dark bro’hood abominations

It's not that bad, you can do the psijic line, mage guild and picking up skyshards at the same time on a new character, by level 13-15 you finished the psijic quest line, maxed out the magic guild and picked up about 120-130 skyshards all over the place.

You do realize that the Psijic Order forbids (thread) Necromancy, yeah?

I honestly didn’t mind it on my alt even though it was an excruciating experience on my main, the first time I ran through it. It’s kinda convenient on an alt, if you’re grabbing skyshards and lore books and gaining exp from discovering areas.

I get the concept behind the quests as trying to emulate Arena's main quest where you find parts of the Staff of Chaos in every region but ZOS managed to make it really boring.

Also have another criticism where in my opinion they wrote the High Elves in general as goofy incompetent idiots in the Summerset DLC.

The psijics use this to weed out the people they think wouldnt be a good fit. If you lack the patience to deal with the tedium of the quest then you are likely gonna end up like manamarco wreaking havok on nirn. They dont want that. So they bore you to death to see if you take shortcuts or just give up.

It gets boring on the third run (and I have done it 5 times. Lol). But it benefits new characters because 1) They need to unlock the wayshrines in the zones anyway and 2)New characters can pick up skyshards on the way.
