Account wide Achievements

I said no but I think there's a middle ground, there are some achievements that could be account wide while others should really be character based.

Eidetic memory books are one that I could see being account wide, they are really a bit of a completionist thing and sometimes it is difficult to find them all on any single character.

Killing all the named dolmen bosses is one that I would say no to, I think these kind of achievements really need to be completed on a single character to be meaningful.

So, for me, there isn't really a yes or no answer, each achievement would need to be considered individually.

And I need to keep saying no on this. I do not want my ability to track which character has done what removed from the game. By all means provide an account-wide summary, but don't remove the detail. We have account-wide trophies to tell us we've done a specific dungeon on the account. The character has an achievement to indicate it was that specific character. Keep it that way.

Why does everyone think that Zos would have to remove character based achievement listings to be able to add account wide? It seems like a weak argument fabricated to argue against change for the sake of arguing against change.

People think that because there isn't a single, clearly presented version of how current character specific achievements would translate to an account wide system. I think a lot of people are just imagining something that looks like today's interface except that achievements are granted and dated account wide. Like ghastley, I like having the details on which characters have done things and when, and would hate to lose that. I'm also not sure that a system like you seem to be proposing would work for someone like edziu as he would still be able to see lists of incomplete achievements on alts.

I'm not opposed to all aspects of account wide achievements. I really don't see any reason why achievement furniture unlocks can't be account wide. Eidetic memory is outside the achievement system but especially with all the books that remain only accessible on a particular quest, I would like to see it account wide. Titles; well I don't personally use them or care much one way or the other. Some (flawless conqueror for example) do still carry some significant implications about ability to perform on a particular character. Other titles are really just a sign that you happened to do a particular quest line on that character and really don't mean much. Since it was clearly a deliberate developer design choice to keep titles character specific, I don't think forum threads will change that easily.

There are at least a few things linked to achievements that would need significant redesign or result in big changes. Undaunted guild progress is tied to dungeon achievements. If you no longer got credit for those, ranking up undaunted would be a lot more of a grind. If you got credit account wide, then all my new characters would start at near max undaunted which seems odd.

What I would like to see, as others have suggested, is an easy account wide overview of achievements. I'd like to be able to compare one character to another, and to easily see which other characters on my account have any given achievement.

For the record, I don't quite understand the hardcore completionists. For the most part, not having an achievement does not impact my ability or enjoyment of an alt. It also seems like handing control of your fun over to an arbitrary list. I look at achievements and judge for myself whether it seems fun, has a desirable collectible, or has meaning in terms of overcoming challenge. If not, I just don't bother.

Make it like WoW achievements. If you have achieved it on another character, you will have gained the rewards on all characters and the achievement listing has changed "colour" in your journal on all characters.
But you will still be able to re-complete the achievements, still need to re-explore a map and still need to level crafting on new characters.

So, achievements will "show" as completed on new characters, but you CAN still re-complete everything if you feel like it.

If it's something like this, then I vote Yes.
I too would quite like something like this.

But I imagine most armchair experts on game design and psychology in videogamws will find a reason to disagree...

May I throw down a little challenge to those who believe the player does everything including earning achievements rather than their characters?

Could they please create a new account and earn some achievements by themselves, without first creating a character?

Let us all know how you get on.
