Really Wish the Game Played Better

I dont have the most powerhouse pc build in the world, but its pretty good. gtx 1080, i7-8700k@4.2Ghz, I can run nearly any game in the settings I want.

ESO However, I have literally everything turned all the way down except texture quality which is at high (middle setting) and subsampling (because turning it down further is like putting layers of saran wrap on my screen)

I sit at a comfy 100-110 fps in unpopulated places, but even relaxing in stormhaven i drop to 70s, but thats still playable. In my sunspire runs tonight, i fell to ~30fps. One of the biggest reasons to play on pc is better hardware, better performance, but thats not the case in eso.

I dont think gou has much to do with it, it rarely does in mmos. The problem seems to be cpu utilization.

Blizzard recently did a bout of upgrades on wow, improving multi-threaded performance with dx12, and it was a pretty solid 20-30 fps increase in every situation of the game. Id absolutely love to see some more optimization.

    Odd that you’re getting that extreme of a performance problem. While it is as unstable as yours, I’m still at all max settings and get the same FPS you do. And that’s with a 1080 and a 7700.

    I do turn off ally effects though. Maybe that would make a difference for trials?

    Same, 1080 Ti and in trials I'm forced to degrade graphics to lowest level to have more or less ok fps.
    Meanwhile fully modded Skyrim and WItcher3 runs smooth, same as any modern game defaults to ultras and fps doesn't drop.

    If I remember correctly, a while back someone at ZOS mentioned that they intend to bring DX12 to ESO. But that was a while ago and there hasn't been an update ever since.

    Just set everything to max and forget about framerate. i play in surround widescreen, 5760x1080 with a i5-2500 overclocked to 4.4ghz and sli 970s and get around the same framerates as you, while everything is set to max.

    i do have ally effects disabled. its actually crazy how big of a hit i get. its just eso not utilizing my cpu to its potential.

    thatd be nice, at least if it included noticeable multithreaded cpu optimizations. would like to get a zos remark on this @ZOS_GinaBruno

    I have a worse PC but not too bad. I run it always at max even in LARGE zerg fights in Cyrodiil. I never fall below 45 fps unless its a weird spike drop.

    I know I forced ESO to use 100% of my processing power..and it still doesn't I wish it did, its limited. But overall my FPS isn't too bad.

    I'm always at 110-130 on ultra settings, and if your monitor is only 60hz you wont notice anything over it anyways

    monitor is 144hz,. i usually keep my fps limited to 100 with votans, but when its not limited it peaks around 120

    i also tried raising my cpu priority to see if itd help but it idnt really do much, plus theres no way as far as i can tell to save that setting, it always reverts to normal when you relaunch the game

    i also feel like there my be a memory leak somewhere. the loger i play the game the more unstable my fps gets. i remember this was a huge problem with destiny 2 when it lunched on pc. took the devs 2 weeks to fix and it was so bad when it happened you had to reboot the game.

    i love eso and its combat but man does i feel unpolished sometimes

    Here you go. One of many questions answered in this post is about DX12. They also talked about reworking mountain and tree LOD assets in zones so they could push back the fog distance.

    These comments were all made back in 2015 though, so unless they’re holding out for a big “next gen” graphics update for a 2020 or 2021 Chapter, to see ESO through another console generation, I don’t think either are happening anymore.

    thanks for the info on that. really sucks to see that it was promised almost 5 years ago and still no deliverance. does the dude that mad that post even work at zos anymore?

    One program I use to measure CPU, GPU and Thread loading and optimization is MSI Afterburner. It works for pretty much all GPUs, CPUs, etc and is a great tool to see what happens live in a game.

    For my system I used Afterburner to monitor CPU, GPU and Core/Thread loading and was pleasantly surprised.

    I run dual 1080 Ti's and the loading the entire time was almost exactly 50/50 on the GPU's. The 16 Threads were all loading evenly (as best as can be watched while playing the game) and CPU loading is always pretty low for me at around 24%.

    Another thing you may want to look at is how the PC is setup for it's operating mode. What I mean is are you running in "Balanced" or "High Performance" or "Gaming" or whatever mode you have chosen or manually established...this all affects performance.

    This is a cool little program I use to help with the power settings: https://coderbag.com/product/quickcpu

    If you are using an NVidia video card have a look in the Nvidia Control Panel settings and scroll down to Power Management Mode and select Prefer Maximum Performance.

    Just a few things you may want to look at if they apply to you.

    Oh, one more thing: Turn off pretty much all the Addons you don't need for Trials and especially for PVP. Addon's wreck performance in those areas big time.

    yeah. i checked a lot of that, my nvidia control panel is set to prefer performance over anything else, as well as a couple other settings. eso isnt that hard on the gpu to begin with however. its more cpu intensive

    GTX 980 7700k Here

    I use to have bad problems with this game when I first got it. My MAX FPS would drop from 100 to 80 and get stuck at 80 due to Ambient Occlusion being on. You will never get great frame rates in towns and in big fights in Cyrodiil just come to the realization that this is an old CPU driven engine.

    Try these in game video settings:

    Texture Quality = High
    Sub Sampling Quality = High
    Shadow Quality = Low
    Water Reflection = Off
    Max Particle Systems = 1024
    Particle Suppression Distance = 50
    View Distance = 50
    Ambient Occlusion = None (I think this has a memory leak or a frame rate loss over time)
    Bloom = On
    Depth Of Field = On
    Distortion = On
    Sunlight Rays = On
    Grass = On
    Show Ally Effects = Set as needed for cyrodiil turn it off / for small group PVE turn it on

    11
    none
    everything here and below off

    technically i have lower settings than you, i do feel like the longer i stay in game the laggier it gets though
