Main tank question for PVE...

For some time the Dragonknight has always been the go to for main tanking in ESO, I know any class can tank, but as far as if you were to single out one class it has always been the Dragonknight for the most part.

With all the class changes and the release of the Necromancer, do you still feel the Dragonknight is still at the top or has that changed in your opinion?

I am still leveling the necromancer and still to low to compare to my Dragonknight, so if anyone has a top level necro tank I would like to hear your thoughts as well.

Warden is IMO a better tank.

EP: Narileya - Nord StamPlar (Mad cuz Bad)

    PS4 NA (Retired at CP835): Soviet-Messiah:
    EP: Cortimi - Imperial StamDK
    DC: Melga gra-Antilae - StamDen
    AD: Corvaera - Bosmer StamSorc

CP is a crutch for people who can’t sustain and want to be "tanky" so they aren’t immediately punished for making mistakes.

Until devs rework engulfing flames or give other classes a similarly potent debuff, if you have Magicka DPS in your group, dk is going to be the tank in demand if only because of that skill, regardless of how effective other classes are at self sustain, pulling adds, resistance buffs, etc. Warden has some nice survivability buffs/debuffs to offer, but those are easy enough to get from a healer as well whereas the engulfing flames debuff is not.

DK is still at the top. It brings damage buff to both Stamina groups (Minor Brutality) and Magicka groups (Engulfing Flames) and they will always be the top choice unless MagDK DPS somehow becomes amazingly good and brings those buffs. Only real benefit of having a Necro Tank is for ease of progression with Res Ulti and sometimes Major Vulnerability. Currently, best group composition seems like DK Tank (Minor Brutality), NB Tank (Minor Savagery), Templar Healer (Minor Fracture), Warden Healer (Minor Toughness) and 8 StamNecros rotating Flesh Atronach for high Major Vulnerability uptime. With this group composition, you have all the buffs you need coming from support roles. Necromancers have amazing sustain too thanks to their Max Health passive. An Orc StamNecro has 17k Health using Max Stamina + Stamina Recovery food with Ebon and Minor Toughness which is enough. You can always put a Health enchant on for high incoming damage content and you are good to go.

Anyway, my point is that Necro Tanks are most welcome in progression groups where your group members will die a lot. I could argue that they are the best for those groups. They have absolutely insane ultimate regeneration that lets them get the Res Ulti pretty fast. On PTS, I could get my Res Ulti back while running from one trash pack to the other one which is insane. Of course the cost increase will make that a lot more difficult but I almost always had around 300-400 Ultimate when I used my Res Ulti anyway. So yeah, they are pretty good I would say but only in progression groups.

This is true, for me the reason the DK is tank focused is in order to tank you need to block, which takes stamina and you need to take hits which a damage shield is good for. With the DK the more you keep up your damage shield the more stamina you get back for blocking with the DK passive. So it seems the perfect sync in tanking, a never ending flow of stamina for blocking that shields you, it just doesn't get better than that.
