To answer your first question: I won't be playing ESO for few months now due to irl stuff. So, I'd tune into someone's stream when I can and watch them pvp or dummy parse or raid. I'd give me a 'fix' of ESO.
I don't watch a lot of eso streamers, but I don't get judging it, either. It's like watching a sport or a hobby video, the only difference is one has been around longer and is thus seen as "normal." I watch lots of videos related to other hobbies, even though I'd rather be doing the hobbies.
As for the second half, that's nonsense, unless you've found a streamer that does nothing but look at their map and mouse over keeps to reveal siege strengths at unflagged enemy keeps.
Some times I'm not able to play myself and some streamers communities are fun to interact with. But then again, I'm not sure that's actually the answer you're interested in.
It's an interactive form of entertainment that provided another opportunity for the community to chat. Also can be an avenue to learn more about the game. Many people will even watch one while playing.
The reason I watch streamers/Youtube walkthroughs is mostly because I don't have a console etc to get a certain game on so I'll gladly watch someone else play and still be enjoyed
personally for me the "guilty pleasure" of watching other people playing games or do other things that you yourself interest in, is to see how they react to that activity/things/game, how they learn and failed on each activity like you once was, and how they solve some problem differently than your way back in the past etc etc.
I love to watch PVE raids on stream, because it's interesting to see which tactics other groups use. And of course I watch streams of the upcoming Sunspire trial. My group doesn't raid on the PTS, so I have no one to progress with on there, but I am interested in the content and want to know what to expect when we walk into there next week. I don#t like being all clueless.
Plus, I simply like to watch a stream on my Laptop/Second screen while I am playing and my guildmates aren't online or when I am doing boring stuff (collecting surveys etc).
It's entertaining to listen to someone with the same interests. The same reason why I sometimes watch a tv series on the second screen while fishing/farming/collecting my surveys or something.
I also use the twitch chat to have nice conversations with people. (i am also a mod on one of the bigger ESO streamer channels, so when that stream is online, I try to at least keep an eye on the chat to stop spam if necessary)
This is probably not what you wanted to read, as I think this is a topic to farm "watching others play a game is dumb" comments, but whatever.
Well, I can only answer for myself, as someone who streams every now and then for a closed audience (It would be closed if Twitch allowed it).
Basically my girlfriend likes to sit back and relax, and watch me play a game that she might not personally be interested in playing, but is interested in watching.
Can't find a reason why someone who is already playing a game, deciding to watch someone play the same game, unless it's for a specific reason.
I guess the reason is "Muh entertaining personality", but... I've yet to find a streamer that has any charm to them, and spends the time playing a PvP game or doing end-game PvE.
I think people watch someone else play to see how something is done. Then try and emulate that.
I have had a few people ask me to stream Maelstrom runs. I’m not a super great player or anything so that kind of blows my mind that anyone would want to watch me.
Maybe see some one v x vids to get a fix when you can’t play. No idea. Never watch them.
I watch streams a lot when I am unable to play for longer periods due to work or traveling. It's nice to keep up with the game.
Also, streamers like Fengrush and Alcast regularly read and discuss the PTS patchnotes live on their streams and that is always very informative. I read them myself, of course, but sometimes I just don't pick up on some details and those discussions help me a lot to understand the actual impact that changes can have on the game without having to dig through countless pages of forum salt.
If you can't even spell sets, locations and items, you probably have no clue what you even are talking about.
