Why isn't Skeletal Mage considered a DOT if it's technically doing damage over time ?
Is this a bug or intentional by ZOS ?
Unearth a skeleton mage from the dirt to fight by your side for 16 SECONDS . The mage attacks the closest enemy every 2 SECONDS dealing, [X] Shock Damage. Creates a corpse upon death.
Quick rule of thumb for DoTs in this game: If the tooltip says "Deals amount d damage over time t" or "Deals d damage every 1s over a period of time t" it's usally a DoT. Obviously, there can be exceptions. As the above posters already pointed out, skeletal mage and it's morphs basically exist like other pets in this game, dealing direct damage with each shot. Another ability that works similarly (not the same though) would be haunting curse. Even though it deals damage within a certain time frame (12s) it is not a dot, as it blows up once at the 3.5s mark and a second time at the 12s mark.
It's a temporary pet, but in terms of mechanics it acts just like any other pet. It has it's light attacks which are considered direct attacks, of course.
Cause it exists as a pet. So it does its own attacks as direct damage. It only exists for a duration though.
That's interesting - Becuase the sorc attronach is considered a pet also but gets buffed as a dot.
The technicalities of damage over time in verbage should be explained more by ZOS.
Regaurdless if it's a pet or not it's still doing damage over time of [x] seconds. I get the mechanics of it as its own entity, as casted Sorc pets do not scale as a Dot.
