How exactly do we get access to the PTS

I've been all over the forums looking for this so any information/links would be greatly appreciated. I know I have to download it, but is there some kind of access code, and if so, how do I get one? Thanks in advance.

You have to have ESO on PC, it's not available on consoles.

Open the launcher, click the cog in the top-right corner and click the check box under 'Show Public Test Environment'. Then click Apply and it will take you back to the main screen. You should see the PTS listed under the live server. Click on it and then click the Download button (where Play normally is). Once it's downloaded you'll be able to log in like you would with the live server.

Depending on whether the EU or NA server is the one copied over you may have all your characters, items etc. available or you might have to start from scratch, but either way you can create new characters using a template to make them the max level with all skills fully trained up and with an inventory full of useful equipment.

I got an email last year inviting me to beta test Summerset, and I redeemed my invite code then and installed the PTS game. It was a major factor in my decision to preorder Summerset. But I haven't been on the PTS yet to try out Elsweyr, and the info in the above thread seems to be conflicting as to whether you automatically get access to Elsweyr or need to preorder it first.

And so I'm clear, any character I create on the PTS is erased eventually?

Yes. For the first two weeks your characters from the NA server get copied, for week 3 and 4 it's the characters from the EU server (NA characters get deleted at that time) and for week 5 it's NA again.

Any character you created on PTS gets deleted when another copy happens.

I've just logged onto the PTS again, and I do indeed have access to Elsweyr even though I haven't preordered it yet. But I didn't try to create a new character yet so I don't know if the Necromancer class is available to me or whether I need to preorder first (as implied in the thread I linked to above).

I haven't pre-ordered either. Log in with one of your characters and then log out. That should unlock the Necromancer for you.

It may have been mentioned but there are templates on the PTS where you can create a max level character.
