I had a thought earlier. PS5 games will likely be written in vulkan and will make them great candidates for porting to linux via steam play. Much more so then the dx11/12 games are.

All hail the mighty ps5 games written in vulkan that will port to linux!

I still have my SNES. And half a dozen original games. Still think it's a shame that I no longer have my NES, but I traded that in so I could buy the SNES, so...

Edit: on a more serious note I’m not 100% sure how I feel about the disc-less Xbox that’s coming out... probably disappointed tho bc most of my games are on a disc

I remember going to best buy a couple of years ago and noticing none of the computers had disc drives...and, then - I suddenly remembered 8 track cassettes :)

yeah, can't imagine discs will be around all that much longer...

we had a console stereo with a turntable that played 45's and 33 rpm records. had a 72 rpm setting too... and an 8 track player.

i had bought a portable 8 track player and rigged it up with a couple of external speakers until my mother plugged the speaker wires into the outlet somehow... oh well. ....paper back writer....

Quick check for anyone else with accounts on both - if you go to the same major areas, at the same time of day, do you see more other players on console or PC?

My experience is PS4 population >>> PC, but it could be time of day. Just wondering what you guys see and how that might relate to the debate.

The game is instanced. You never see more than the max population in the instance you are currently loaded into.

I played ESO both on PC and PS4 and switched to PS4. Nothing is better than playing beautiful ESO on a huge TV in a comfortable chair with a premium controller. And I cannot wait for the PS5 to get an even more beautiful and fluid ESO in my living room. :)

I use a PS4 controller for all action games on my PC. I also play games on my TV via Steam Link.

In the end it won't matter as the gaming PC as we know it is going the way of the Dinosaur because of high production costs and the evolution of devices like smart TV, Internet of things devices, Smart Phones, Tablets and yes dedicated gaming boxes called consoles. Distributed processing is the wave of the future.
There already is far less choices of components to build your PC with then there was a few years ago.

Consoles are actually far more likely to go extinct.

Game streaming will likely replace them within a generation or two. Why would people spend $500 on a console and $50 on games when they can play all the same games on a cheap media box or tablet for a small monthly fee? The competitive advantage of consoles is their price. Streaming gives you better game performance for a fraction of the cost.

PC gaming might still have a market as almost all e-sports are on PC (e-sports is a billion dollar industry). Streaming won't work for e-sports due to input lag and 60 FPS lock.

SNES was awesome. Super Mario World and Zelda and DKC (and others)... and Super Metroid (Metroid 3) blew me away after we had to deal with Metroid 2 on Gameboy. :p I imagine Diablo players have the same feels when a phone game was announced and nothing for PC/Consoles. >.<

By your logic why would that same people pay $1500 for same thing on PC? Because as it stands vast majority of PC gamers have low and very low end PCs, not even up to new Ryzen intergated graphics level.

Its FAR more likely that those on PC will switch to streaming as PC will be even MORE disatvantaged by price, not to mention that average joe doesnt need PC for surfing/facebook/twitter/netflix... .. .... any more.

And esporst fallacy, when you look at new esports games, they are much much more popular on consoles (Fortnite) than on PC, and streaming will work for average joe on esports just fine as average joe isnt really competing for the titles.

And that is backed up by actual data as there are less and less PCs with less and less dedicated GPUs sold every year while consoles are having some of the best times in history (along with monopoly on best games), PS4 is about to hit 100m sold, switch is selling great too, and not even xbox is too shabby.

People seem to be under the impression that PCs can't connect to tellies, or use wireless gamepads.

If anything PCs have more options than any console. I use an Xbox 360 controller for ESO, well, a fancy Razer one with remappable buttons.

Cost me £40 from CeX. I also have a Speedlink gamepad that does the same that cost that much new.

To get the same features on Xbox you have to spend at least £120... Even more for PS4. I've looked.

There are zero to none pro's when it comes to console. multimedia?? link your pc to your tv boom netflix. sit on the couch with a controller? possible on PC aswel. Addons telling you what to do? no one is forcing you to use these, if you want to clear content through skill dont use addons?

stop telling lies, there's nothing console does better then PC, coming from a console player.

    This.

Name me one thing that a console can do that a PC can't, and I'll eat my hat.

    "Couch Gaming"?

There's a reason mATX/ITX form factors exist: So you can fit your PC in your living room and you guessed it! Play games from your couch! I have a good friend who does just this. And I mean an IRL friend. I've used said mini PC myself. Oh... And guys, it's a beast that massively outperforms consoles.

Reliability. A console is better at guaranteeing every single game you boot up will work 1st time without fail. Without having to spend endless hours trawling the net to pin point why that game won't load on your PC or why it's constantly crashing. Barring a fault that lies squarely with the devs, I can count on one finger how many games haven't worked straight out of the box on console. I can't say the same thing about my gaming pc.

The only time i can remember fiddling on my pc is because i was gaming on linux and not windows with a game that was made for windows. as far as playing windows games on windows goes, i cant remember ever having a problem and i have been gamin since atari came out with it's first console. I think you sound sad and bitter. please stop arguing over things you obviously have no experience with.

    Aye, sounds legit

Pong. anyone remember playing pong? it was a blast.

Now if you know what an Imsai 8080 and an S-100 bus is I will be impressed with your ancientness.
    Oh wait I'm old. lol

My first computer i bought used from the secretary at our clinic. It was a tandy 1000 with an 8088 processor

I have fond memories of increasing the memory in my Z80 based TRS-80 model 1 by stacking ram chips on top of each other and soldering them. 4k to 16k was badass! lol
Now I don't have PC with under 32GB.

Agree with you here not only streaming but also stuff like stronger smart tv and mobile devices will eat console shares from the bottom, while on the other hand the PS5 chip will be used in laptops. Also pc has modding.

Think we get an PS7, but it would be an set top box like an decoder, Microsoft moves in this direction with an xbox with no optical drive, yes next generation will still have them but they are going away.
Grinding just make you go in circles.

Youre talking pure nonsense lmao do you not understand that the average "gamer" games on a console, ESPC the new generation of kids which will be the main consumer for the coming years. Console gaming is where the money is at. Have you ever seen an ad on TV for a gaming PC? It doesnt appeal to everyday people.
Its expensive and takes up too much space.

No but consumer affordable PC's mother boards are going to become so similar to consoles there won't be much difference.
Higher end PC workstations prices are going to skyrocket above the budget of the average gamer.

I have a gaming laptop that I paid $700 that can eat right through the game on high/ultra settings.

    That said........I play on Xbox.

You also cannot build a desktop PC for the same price as a PS4 Pro or whatever the 5 will cost that has the same power.

Further more, PC elitists are the worst.

Maybe one day I switch fully to PC, should ESO's popularity on Xbox decline massively but I hope to never act like some of you all in this thread.

No problem mate. I love consoles. \o/ My Playstation introduced me to some amazing games back in the day, the very first Tomb Raider - best game ever! - I've played every Tomb Raider game ever since - latest being Shadow of the Tomb Raider - awesome game! ... Wipeout, Colony Wars, Resident Evil, etc.

    I love these threads!

I have a pc 2 laptops an xbone a ps4 a switch, multiple tablets etc etc so forth.

Personally, I use the pc for games. The rest my kids use.

Now I grew up playing consoles and pc’s from Atari and Commodore 64 to sega master system, nes snes genesis etc etc etc all the way up.

It just felt like a natural progression for me to go to pc as it does almost everything better imo. <<<<<<<< notice I said imo.

Now that doesn’t mean I don’t play consoles ever but to be completely honest +40 and working in the construction field my whole life have made analog sticks very hard for me to aim compared to pc.

When I want to push my effectiveness through the technology and personal skill I always go to pc and mouse and keyboard.

I also understand I could use mnk on console as well but it’s easier FOR ME to use a controller on my pc if that’s what I want to do.

I still play consoles from time to time with my kids or friends I know that also play on them.

I enjoy games in all forms. Always have and now I get to enjoy them with my children as well.

It all comes down to preference and in the case of consoles accessibility.

I’m not an elitist and I do not push the pc master race agenda but when it comes down to straight “horsepower” the pc will always win.

To each his or her own. I’m looking forward to the day my children also graduate to their pc’s as well.

Because if they play console exclusively past their preteen years I will disown them for being lesser race console plebs.

(Sorry couldn’t resist, I’ll still love the special little guys if they play console I promise)
