There are no diminishing returns. You get 1% damage reduction for every 660 points of resistance, and 33000 resistance gives you the maximum damage mitigation (50%), however keep in mind that enemies who have penetration reduce your resistance by that number. So there is no clear answer to your question, because it depends on who is attacking you.

Yep. Though it's more of a soft cap in PvP because people have penetration.

Hard cap on the maximum mitigation your resistance can give you, yes. No cap on how much resistance you can have. If the enemy has insane penetration, you can counter that with insane resistance.

    33,000 and 660.

. For Champion point 160+ characters the hard cap for resistance is 33,000, or 660 resistance per 1% mitigated, which then tops it of at 50%.

Stacking the same type of resistance is technically the opposite of diminishing returns, since the last percentage point of resistance you stack reduces damage taken more than the first percentage point of resistance.

Choosing 1% physical resistance instead of 0% means the damage taken goes from 100% to 99%, a change of 1%. When you're at 49% mitigation and add another 1%, the damage taken goes from 51% to 50%, a 2% change in damage taken (51-50)÷51

But you could call it diminishing when choosing more resistance over stats/crit/Regen reduces the overall effectiveness of other functions of your build.

Just looked it up... I was off in regards to the calculation, but the PvE cap is still 33100, not 33k.

Gear-wise, usually, 5 pieces heavy armor + 1x pirate + 1x lord warden (2x armor/resist bonus) is just bellow the "too much resistance" psycological cap. This should put you around 30k armor and resist with major armor buffs. Above that point, any extra armor will start diminishing from your damage or sustain as you build for MOAR tankiness rather than damage/sustain.

paulsimonps 21/01/2019 on the tank discord:
You would have to do the math yourself. Its simple enough, just look at all your resistance sources and add it together. Cap is 33000, but in reality in PvE its 33100 cause Mobs have 100 pen

Want to confirm the quotes and say Cap is 33,000 and mobs still have a base 100pen so cap in PvE is 33,100. Though most accurate way to calculate it is, (resist-100)/660 and not the 662. Both are close and if you don't care too much quick math with 662 will still get you what you want.
