All of my toons are male because that's just what I like looking at, but I have picked up so many dresses from loot crate drops and now another coming in the dailies that I've decided to make a female with one of the new toon slots they give us. I have had a couple but I didn't like the way they looked and deleted them, they were just really harsh and tacky with the makeup that looked subtle in the creation screen. Wish there was a way to change that lighting, it's so deceptive. Anyway, long-winded explanation, the bottom line is just aesthetics.

Even today, my interests and hobbies are things that are traditionally (or stereotypically) more male oriented than things that are female oriented. This makes my husband happy because we share the one of our major hobbies together and I don't spend lots of money on shoes!
I am very comfortable with who I am.
I've played a few MMOs were I had choice in the gender of my characters and I've played a lot of FPS and single player games where I've played didn't have a choice.
It never bothered me either way in any way.
I have 7 male characters and 8 female. I will make 2 more female when the slots become available. 7 of my characters are khajiit and one is argonian. The rest are altmer, bosmer, nord, Breton and imperial.
ESO is a game, something I do to escape from the drudgery of real life for a few hours. I am not a role player, but I do lose myself in my characters when I play them as I would lose myself in the characters of a good novel.
I choose my characters gender based on the vision I have for them. Some of them have a rudimentary back story in my mind. I make story choices in the game with what I have in mind for their personality.
ESO is story time/play time where I can be whatever I want in the ESO universe, whether it is the hero Khajiit that fights in the 3 banners war for his fellow countrymen, or the thief and rogue that lives in a cave in Craglorn with a conclave of other thieves or the ex slave Argonian turned healer, or the nord warrior, etc etc.
From the list of toys you must belong to the generation just younger than me. I was like that too.... still am! Horses, dogs, cars, trucks (it's MY truck.... heh) - well, cats too though I'm currently catless - hunting, target shooting, hiking, building a house.... The women around here diss me because I talk to the men about stuff, because I am NOT interested in grandbabies, sewing, or church stuff.... all they ever talk about....

I can't tell you how many times I'd be on my Blood Elf in WoW, and have an Orc warrior (why is is always an Orc?!) ride up to me and say, completely out of the blue and apropos of nothing, "Hey cutie, you got a man?" They always get upset if I respond "Have you?" I can say with absolute certainty going back 30+ years of MMO gaming (back to text-only MUDs), I have never had a female character ride up to my male one and say that. Not once. And I have had some friggin' HOT male characters, I'll tell ya. A few of them made Ryan Gosling look like hammered doodoo.

Glad you both like his outfit! Took me ages to cobble that one together. OwO
The parts of his outfit are:
1.) Sapiarch Light Hood
2.) Trinimac Light Shoulders
3.) Sapiarch Medium Chest
4.) Ancient Elf Light Gloves
5.) Dremora Medium Belt
6.) Celestial Light Pants
7.) Sapiarch Light Boots
8.) Ebonshadow Staff
I was going for a nice robed style but didn't want something that went all the way down and covered to his feet. I like the open look of the Celestial Breeches but unless they're dyed Coldharbour Ash Black they have these awful pinstripes in the pattern. Really hoping they make more open style pants like those later on without interior patterns. *Nods.*
There are two types of mindsets I'd say. First group makes a character that's an extension of their real life selfs. They wanna be a better version of themselves in-game, so they rarely play opposite gender since can't relate to that. Female players tends to be in this group more often than male ones.
Second type doesn't think that way. They rather see their characters as owning a stable of precious creations or possessions. This group doesn't mind playing opposite gender. For them, playing different characters is more like driving different sports cars.
Obviously this is a sweeping statement and a lot people are somewhere in-between.
