Why do you play a female character?

I don't like playing with female character when i am male.
History, like a human being, is thirsty when it wakes from its slumber…History wants to drink up an enormous amount of blood. And even if history has tired of drinking blood, that’s only in regards to the amount. But what about quality? The larger the sacrifice is, the more delighted the cruel gods will be.

Glad you both like his outfit! Took me ages to cobble that one together. OwO

The parts of his outfit are:
    1.) Sapiarch Light Hood
    2.) Trinimac Light Shoulders
    3.) Sapiarch Medium Chest
    4.) Ancient Elf Light Gloves
    5.) Dremora Medium Belt
    6.) Celestial Light Pants
    7.) Sapiarch Light Boots
    8.) Ebonshadow Staff

I was going for a nice robed style but didn't want something that went all the way down and covered to his feet. I like the open look of the Celestial Breeches but unless they're dyed Coldharbour Ash Black they have these awful pinstripes in the pattern. Really hoping they make more open style pants like those later on without interior patterns. *Nods.*

All of my toons are male because that's just what I like looking at, but I have picked up so many dresses from loot crate drops and now another coming in the dailies that I've decided to make a female with one of the new toon slots they give us. I have had a couple but I didn't like the way they looked and deleted them, they were just really harsh and tacky with the makeup that looked subtle in the creation screen. Wish there was a way to change that lighting, it's so deceptive. Anyway, long-winded explanation, the bottom line is just aesthetics.

I'm female and I play male and female characters equally. This is an RPG after all, and I prefer to play characters that are different than me in real life, be it by gender or personality or both.

I would never, ever try to duplicate myself in an RPG (or even an idealised version of myself), because for me that would simply be boring.

Male player, 3 male characters 6 female.

I flip a coin when creating a character to choose which gender it is unless the animations look stupid. The male running animation in WoW when I played it looked ridiculous, as if the character had a broomstick up its ass and in Anarchy Online the female characters run animation was even worse unless that has changed, I heard they were changing the game engine in that.

I also play Conan Exiles at the mo and you can have full nudity in that if you wish but my character is male.

I would love to see what some of the internet-psychologists in this thread make of that :)

I am female in real life, I identify as female and I am attracted to the opposite sex. My entire life, I have always been a bit of a tom boy. I played more with matchbox cars, toy trains, plastic cowboys and Indians and Lincoln logs than I did with barbie dolls.

Even today, my interests and hobbies are things that are traditionally (or stereotypically) more male oriented than things that are female oriented. This makes my husband happy because we share the one of our major hobbies together and I don't spend lots of money on shoes!

I am very comfortable with who I am.

I've played a few MMOs were I had choice in the gender of my characters and I've played a lot of FPS and single player games where I've played didn't have a choice.

It never bothered me either way in any way.

I have 7 male characters and 8 female. I will make 2 more female when the slots become available. 7 of my characters are khajiit and one is argonian. The rest are altmer, bosmer, nord, Breton and imperial.

ESO is a game, something I do to escape from the drudgery of real life for a few hours. I am not a role player, but I do lose myself in my characters when I play them as I would lose myself in the characters of a good novel.

I choose my characters gender based on the vision I have for them. Some of them have a rudimentary back story in my mind. I make story choices in the game with what I have in mind for their personality.

ESO is story time/play time where I can be whatever I want in the ESO universe, whether it is the hero Khajiit that fights in the 3 banners war for his fellow countrymen, or the thief and rogue that lives in a cave in Craglorn with a conclave of other thieves or the ex slave Argonian turned healer, or the nord warrior, etc etc.

From the list of toys you must belong to the generation just younger than me. I was like that too.... still am! Horses, dogs, cars, trucks (it's MY truck.... heh) - well, cats too though I'm currently catless - hunting, target shooting, hiking, building a house.... The women around here diss me because I talk to the men about stuff, because I am NOT interested in grandbabies, sewing, or church stuff.... all they ever talk about....

So much this with me too. No handbags, makeup or shoes for me - I prefer computers, gardens, cats, dogs, horses, etc. I've kept snakes and tarantulas as pets. I'm retired now, but I was a signwriter (a real one with brush and paint) in my working life, traditionally a man's job. I was the first female to enter that trade. No babies here either - childless and way happier that way!

    I have animals instead! :D

It's great to see that there are other women with my particular mindset. <3

I am female and have 5 female characters (although I only play 2 of them and the rest are for crafting and earning me
    gold. :D ) and 2 males.

Originally I set up one male for my son to play when he visits but then I decided to make another male character for me to play.

I am not looking to be one of the boys and like the usual female stuff BUT I also love computers, and playing survival and building games which my female friends tend to think I am nuts, because I am an older gamer

I don't think it matters much which gender you choose to play as there are no differences with strength etc, within the particular race you choose. So whatever floats your boat !

I should also mention that playing as a female chars was very instructive when it comes to seeing just how many creepers there are. I can't tell you how many times I'd be on my Blood Elf in WoW, and have an Orc warrior (why is is always an Orc?!) ride up to me and say, completely out of the blue and apropos of nothing, "Hey cutie, you got a man?" They always get upset if I respond "Have you?" I can say with absolute certainty going back 30+ years of MMO gaming (back to text-only MUDs), I have never had a female character ride up to my male one and say that. Not once. And I have had some friggin' HOT male characters, I'll tell ya. A few of them made Ryan Gosling look like hammered doodoo.

Amusingly enough, when I'd group up with men in SWTOR, they always assumed I was male when I was playing female toons. I can't count how many times I had to say, "Hello, the opposite gender. My sanitary breaks aren't 20 seconds." I always got a lot of befuddlement :D So many times, after so many corrections to one of my SWTOR friends, he still called me "mate." Then again, being from Northern Cali, everyone's "dude" to me ;)

It's so much easier to run solo!

I can't tell if I'm female or Martian here. I have weird and odd interests that no one in the universe shares. I'm not a tomboy or a girly girl. I don't do girly clothes aside from jeans and yoga pants. I can't stand dogs or children. I love computers and technology. I also love reading up on psychology, yoga philosophy, cognitive science, interior design, weird trends in business, and whatever randomness catches my fancy for the moment. I love all kinds of music from all over the world-- pretty much everything from bhangra to black metal. Currently obsessed with Mongolian folk metal, Kazakh ethno-folk, Afro-pop and music from the Pacific Islands. I love trying new foods and window-shopping import stores, New Age stores, local ethnic stores, anything new to the neighborhood, and, oddly, Home Depot/Lowes/Ikea.

I have no idea what that makes me. But that's the story of my life :D

There are two types of mindsets I'd say. First group makes a character that's an extension of their real life selfs. They wanna be a better version of themselves in-game, so they rarely play opposite gender since can't relate to that. Female players tends to be in this group more often than male ones.

Second type doesn't think that way. They rather see their characters as owning a stable of precious creations or possessions. This group doesn't mind playing opposite gender. For them, playing different characters is more like driving different sports cars.

Obviously this is a sweeping statement and a lot people are somewhere in-between.

I'm definitely more of a type 1 and probably because I'm female. I want my characters to reflect my real life self to a certain degree, so rarely play opposite gender.

When I do play play male chars it's mostly out of curiosity. Funniest thing is when I'm approach by a female character flirting, trying to get free stuff etc, thinking I'm a lonely lovesick guy because the char is a dude. I always play along for the longest time, because funny as hell.

I'm female and I play both (I've currently got 3 male and 4 female) though my main is female.

I roleplay most of them, they've got their backstories and so on, so frankly it just depended on my vision when created them (for example I wanted Altmer templar and I don't like the way Altmer women look. I'd say it's pretty random apart from first character which I usually create as female, the rest depends on my overall mood. And since I tend to focus down Class and Race first when I get an idea I often decide on gender based on whichever I prefer in specific race (again, Altmer females aren't for me, with Dunmer I like both, I prefer Khajiit females - just based on aesthetics and what I can do with character creator).

The corny answer would be "I prefer looking on a female backside", but in truth I wonder why that even is a question.
Are those who ask the question ever watching movies with a female protagonist? Is Tomb Raider a typical girly game?
On that note, should the FBI watch everyone who finished the Dark Brotherhood DLC?

Shouldn't playing a different species, let alone biological class be much weirder than another gender? I know a lot more women than lizard-people, so picking a female human it isn't that odd of a choice, is it?

So... why do I, as a male, play a female human? And why do I also have a male Argonian, and (gasp!) a female Khajiit?
Because I thought it would be fun to play them. It's neither "built my dream girl" nor "wish this would be me". It's just a character in a video game.

Yeah, I've noticed a similar thing in similar threads on many forums. The split between people whose character is an extension of themselves, and the ones who view it as an external thing is pretty big.

(like, for me... I've never tried to use a character creator to make a "looks like me" character. I never, as I was growing up, imagined myself into a movie/book/etc as one of the characters - I never had a 'hero' that I wanted to 'be'. At best, it was "I want to be an archaeologist when I grow up!" not "I want to be Indiana Jones when I grow up!". So, yeah. Just because I move around female characters in games, doesn't mean I want to be female.)

Female player here, and I basically only play males. I hate playing females and this applies to every game I've ever played. None of my charactes are "me"; I have a pool of created characters I pick and play in various vidya. All of them have their own backstories, personalities, quirks etc and most of them are male. I have a lot more fun with male characters than females.

I started playing as males, but once I began to encounter all these pretty looking female characters, I got kind of jealous and wanted to make few pretty ones myself and so I did. Now I have 4 males and 4 females, tho I think I took it a bit too far, because once I got that golden sweet roll from the crate which you can convert to 400 gems, so basically a free apex mount. But guess what, instead of buying mount, I have spent nearly all of the gems for the cosmetics(lipstick, earrings etc.) for my girls :D

So you guys with wives or girlfriends, what do they say or have they said when they see you play a girl in a game and hear the girl character screaming and yelling all the time when you take fall damage, attack, etc.?

Edit: I know many females have played male characters to not be judged or hit on, or even receive obscene messages. I've not seen a female response in this thread stating "they play a male because they like to look at the guy"...

Do you tell your wife or girlfriend "I'd rather look at a girls butt in a game" as well? And does she says so you play a game to stare at a character's butt? How does this dialogue go I wonder.

A lot of these responses seem like some people aren't being honest with themselves and going with the least embarrassing reply which can only be "i like looking at a girls figure!!!1one!". Deflecting by saying "we're not argonians in real life or vampires", etc. That's different because it's clearly a character. But a gender, and acting as if you're the opposite sex in a game is very different than a species because you can be a breast wielding illogical argonian or vampire. And as far as names goes, yea obviously a female character named Chuck or Jim is silly, but instead of a general name like "shorty" or "remedy" these guys have names like Lady Madeline wearing a pink dress and a tiara. It's those cases that are... interesting...

You can do all these other things, and it's perfectly normal. Why, then, would it seem out of the norm to play one, the other, or both genders?

Some do not use their imagination much when it comes to playing this game... in spite of it being an RPG. That said, even among role-players, some just never play a character of a sex that doesn't match theirs. I don't get it either. Sometimes, I ask them about it. Often they'll awkwardly say they don't think they could do a female character (note - I've yet to meet a girl gamer who has issues playing non-female characters). I'll ask - why is that? They often have this strange idea in their head that females are somehow an entirely different species. At that point I usually just give them this look, and then they'll awkwardly say they regard me as "just one of the guys." I'll point out the foible of that, and maybe also say something asking how weird it is that they can play different races (who may literally be different species in the campaign setting) but can't manage a female character.

I don't pester them for that long about it, because they're victims of sexist cultural conditioning. Same deal with the guys who only play girl characters "for the looks" (translation = sex objectification). The good role-players I've interacted with really don't consider their personal feelings about sexes or genders when creating their characters... they do it because... well... role-playing. What our culture says about sex and gender roles becomes irrelevant, because those norms are different in the fantasy worlds we are playing in anyway. We have game masters running historical settings where women are regarded as little more than housewives all the way to fantasy settings where matriarchal rule is the standard (drow, anyone?). Why not explore all of that freely and leave your real world baggage behind?

People do that because, if you go to site like uesp for example to find a lore friendly name for your character, you will quickly realize that nearly all of them are already taken. Lots of them are already taken even if you try adding "Lady" prefix, atleast that was the case for a few ones that I liked, till I finally managed to find one that I liked which was available only with the Lady prefix.
