    1. They are not good with women and make one they wish was resl.
    2. The are with someone they wish looked liked the toon.
    3. They are more feminine.

You keep putting words in people's mouths. You apparently have some pretty big hangups about guys playing female characters. (show us on the doll where a guy playing a female character touched you /s o:) )

Do you have the same hangups about playing games where there's a dedicated female character (like Tomb Raider)? Or how about watching movies or reading books with female protagonists? Or listening to female singers?
(what are your thoughts on male authors who write female characters? Are they also attempting to make 'girlfriends' or wishing they were female?)

Truth never played a tomb raider for the female character. I have to get into the game and I dont really play with female leads. Movies are fine I'm not playing a movie. Books are different I dont think the author is staring at the butt.

So again why do you care what I think dont get triggered. To me it's weird to you it's not we dont have to agree. I stated my reasons why I THINK men play female again my opinion.

Just curious because you're the one who seems "triggered" with how worked up you're getting about the whole topic, projecting all sorts of personal issues on what everyone else is saying.. /shrug

(seriously, I'm always amazed when I run into the idea "I can't play Tomb Raider because Female Protagonist /gasp!" Really? /baffled; I honestly don't see the difference between that and any other game - I'm not Geralt, I'm not Doom Marine Guy, I'm not GTA Criminal Dude, so the fact I'm also not Lara Croft isn't really any different to me.)

But that's what I'm talking about. In the internet you just have to add "but it's my opinion" and poof, you don't have to defend your argument anymore.

And there's a difference in stating "it's not my thing, this is weird for me" and talking about your theories on why people do this because you can't accept that they can just have different tastes. None of the reasons you stated apply to me for example. And this dismissiveness is what's bumming me out, this general attitude of "you have different opinion so you are worse than me" some people tend to have in discussions. I couldn't care less about you personally. You just happened to be the last one replying.

I am a male, I play both male and female characters for 2 primary reasons.

The first reason is because each character I make usually has lore/relations to the other characters I make, I never make a character as myself, rather I make a new person entirely, with their own likes, dislikes, experiences, etc. Just as a writer creates characters in their own stories, which have their own life and persona, I do the same when it comes to game characters. Almost all characters I make are part of a story, I almost never make meme characters.

The second reason I make female characters is because I really enjoy character creation in games, from Sims, to BDO, to FFXIV, to SWtoR, to even ESO, I love creating characters appearances. And from my experiences with character creation systems from all sorts of games, the options/looks for making female characters are a lot better/more vast than male characters, for female characters I usually have a lot of likable options for hair, facial features, etc, while for males I find very few hairstyles or beards I actually like, and a lot of times the facial features are less than desirable (noses are the bane of character creation for me).

TL;DR I make characters which are part of a larger story, and also I like the options that female characters have in character creation more than males.

I am female and play only female characters. I prefer it this way because when I've played male characters (there are times in the game when it's turned my character into a male during a quest) the way they move feels... off somehow. Also, I like pretty dresses. :D

LOL! I shudder every time I have to do the Dominion story quest in Auridon on a new character...that male elf they turn her into with the beard and no hair who runs around leaning forward at a 15° angle... more than I can handle :D

I'm female and play 3 female characters because ESO traumatized me.

There's one on Betnikh that changes you into a male Orc for a brief time. It feels so lumpish to move as a male and I find myself running that little bit faster so I'll be through it as soon as possible.

That said, this is just me and my perspective. My best friend (also female) plays almost exclusively as a male, and I don't find it weird at all for people to play whatever character they like. Different folks, different strokes. :)

out of 15 character, I have 8 male and 7 female, it's pretty balanced ^^ when I imagine my characters, I quickly know if it's a male or a female according to the idea that I have ... they must not be especially attractive, but just "coherent" with what they must be (nice healer, big orc tank, more stealthy character, old hermit ... etc etc)

    Somewhat related...

I'm interested by the concept of creating stories for characters that extend beyond the story of the game. (Yes, I know that is the definition of RP.) For me, the generic backstory of the game is mostly enough and when I find story content lacking, it's usually due to lack of continuity in game-plot. For example, my husband just did the quest with the Kahjit thief in Orsinium last night and when she mentions maybe you'll run into one another in Abah's Landing someday, I thought "I wish I had, actually. That would be cool and make the game feel more real."

For those of you who play this way (RP), can I ask what it is about that format that is enticing? How does having a rich backstory of your own that may, as above, relate to your other characters enhance your game? Does it bring any advantages to your play style?

We do invent backstories in our rp guild. We make character sheets to write down essentials and talk about it on our rp sessions. It's really fun.

I think the new generation likes to play female characters. I can understand women playing with male characters. They played barbie and Ken when little. Guys didnt do that, so that's why it's weird to me. The ones saying they like to look at butts, that's a scapegoat.

My male cousin plays a female i ask why he will never tell me. He looks away or changes topics. Hes part or the new generation. Some are into toon women that's fine, little weird but fine.

If people like you want an actual, winded explanation as to why a Male would play Female characters in a video game, I guess I'll go ahead and give mine.

Women fascinate me, would be the gist. My experience with the opposite sex throughout my developing years can be summarized as "Looking on from the sidelines". My shy insecure demeanor combined with a less attractive physicality did not lure in many, if at all friends of the fairer gender, and thus I only socialized with girls when I was rather forced to either through school or other events. My only REAL delve into the world of Women was when I had a Girlfriend, and that only lasted five years, but they were the best years of my life with an overall wonderful person.

When it comes to media where I can control the main character, I like to create Women because my Literary mind enjoys delving to a world I could only stand on the outside looking into. I imagine her personality, her likes and dislikes, what her thought process in situations would be like as opposed to my own. I live vicariously through her as I've been restricted in reality to the Male side of the spectrum of Society. And yes I have used the excuse, "Cause I like to look at Female butts" before, even if that's actually true. But to me there's SO much more to my enjoyment of Female Characters on top of them looking beautiful.

My Female Characters are people that I admire and wish were real, cause I'd love to be their friend.

So you could a said in short we were right. You guys are trying to make a girlfriend and wish they were real. I don't get why it's hard to say. We know the reason men play female.

    1. They are not good with women and make one they wish was resl.
    2. The are with someone they wish looked liked the toon.
    3. They are more feminine.

Girl this is not why you play male. Again toy played with Ken doll when younger so its not weird you play male. Last I seen some play female and make them after family that to me not weird and makes more sense.

Did you see the word 'girl' in front of when i said friend? No you didnt.

So it still goes to one of my 3. Look no one really cares it's a question. Like I said I think its weird but the new gen is weird so makes sense.

You kinda are insisting you're opinion of these people is right so it seems you care enough not to relent to counterarguments. My point being your claims of people who choose to play video game characters opposite their gender implies generally negative traits for a Male and what Society expects a Male to embody. People reading your opinion could come out thinking their Masculinity has been questioned.

For me it dictates how my characters act/talk/play out, for characters such as my main (Fletcher) as an example, I tend to choose the more "moral" options (as few as they may be), I also tend to act more formal towards players even if im not RPing, while his daughter (Shana), despite taking on certain aspects of her father (such as a preference using lightning magic), her personality is more akin to her uncle (Fletcher's younger brother Seamus), in which she is more casual and enjoys fighting.

Basically depending on who I play I change my mindset to fit what that character is like, even out of RP (which for games like ESO where there isn't many in-game options

Now when it comes to the relations between my characters, even though they realistically cannot interact in-game, they interact out of games, written in my stories for them. It may sound weird, but the characters I make are based off of a larger story that I am making which involves a vast multiverse, in which there are multiple of the same characters (which are loosely related in a complicated way) that reside in different universes and worlds.

Without me rambling on too much, I will just summarize that the reason I set up my characters and play them the way I do, its a way for me to interact with these characters that I have written in a more personal way (rather than just having these characters set as ideas, in games like this I can control these characters in a visual environment, which enhances my experience and understanding of the characters I made). Basically its a way for me to channel my creative ideas in a fun interactive way.
