The Warden bear needs some love, and ill take this PTS cycle to give some feedback from my experience and those of other Warden players having the same issues.
Disclaimer: this feedback is from a mostly PVP perspective and I do no have extensive experience using the bear in high level pve so will not comment much on its effectiveness there
1. Ultimate on both bars: The bear must be slotted on both bars to not de-summon when bar swapping and this is no surprise to anyone. There are several issues with this. To be worth taking up both ultimate slots, the bear needs to be accordingly strong, which in pvp, it is not. Given the current effectiveness of the ultimate in general, it is not such an offensive force that it feels worth not using a defensive ultimate. Ultimates like Light's Champion, Spell Wall, Barrier, or Class based defensive ultimates can be extremely valuable and not being able to use them because bear slotted on both bars seems lopsided. In my opinion, the ultimate should either be balanced around being a single slot ultimate and changed accordingly, have an offensive function on the front bar, and a defensive function if activated on the back bar, or have its power level/ utility improved to compensate for having no defensive ultimate option.
2.Base Damage: The bear does good damage but to enable this damage you must use roots and snares, as the bear cannot keep up with players, and to ever see any benefit from the crushing swipes ability (the bear's aoe slam stun) the bears single largest damage producing source, an enemy player(s) needs to remain in place for more than 3 seconds. This almost never happens, and only does when abusing the snare/root system. The Crushing swipes animation takes too long and is so highly telegraphed so that any skilled player will NEVER be hit by it, and without it the bear is reduced to a moderate damage over time effect that cant even keep up with its target.
3. Ultimate Damage: The activation of the ultimate is VERY strong when used in execute range and rewards skillful play (if it works), but when used outside of execute it does not feel impactful. Having an ultimate be an execute is an interesting idea, but often times I find myself waiting for an opportunity to use the execute function and (since it has not defensive function whatsoever) I sometimes find myself waiting to activate the ultimate until i have well over double the cost. An interesting idea could be to implement and on demand stun at a higher ultimate value (similar to incap strike for NB) which would give a reason to use the ultimate outside execute as currently it feels like a waste to do so. As mentioned above, adding a defensive function if casting the ultimate from the backbar would alleviate this issue as well.
4. Targeting: The current method of using heavy attacks to control the target for the bear is not terrible, especially since an animation cancelled "medium" attack will tell the bear to switch targets makes for fairly quick target changing, however tab targeting taking precedent for bear aggro a on specific player would be a welcome quality of life change. However, i'm not sure how that would be implemented on console. As an added note, the bear can get VERY far away chasing a target I am no longer focusing, and a decease in range of how far the bear can go from the player before being recalled should be looked at.
5. Movement: The. Bear. Needs. To. Gap. Close. The. Target. When. The. Ultimate. Is. Activated. I cannot say how many times I have executed a combo on an enemy, damaged them into execute range, activated my ultimate and............ nothing happens and they get away . Either the bear is on another target and cannot reach my intended target in time to do the damage while the target is still in execute range, is so far away it just doesn't even try to fire the ulti doing absolutely 0 damage, it is floating somewhere in the ether having tried to recall to me but isn't quite back yet, or some other ridiculous situation. Given that the bear has execute functionality, when I activate the ability it needs to do that damage NOW. It is a time sensitive situation, I cannot afford to have the bear take 4 seconds to waddle over to my target and hit them when they've healed back to 100% health.
