You need to reach the first rank of campaign rewards, which requires 25k AP. You can get that much fairly quickly by either joining a zerg group or getting a few friends together and taking resource flags.
Yes you don't need to be in group but its better as you see other players on map and its easier to get Resurrection then you die. not sure about AP gain but think its better to be in group if you don't get many kills. You need to reach the first rank of campaign rewards, which requires 25k AP. This and honestly you dont even need to be in a group. Just try to participate in a few sieges either on defending or attacking side and you can reach rank 1 in less than 1 hour

You need only tier 1, which is 25k AP

Fair warning.. once you have gone down the dark path of PvP.. there might not be any going back. You might find yourself doing regular things in ESO like maybe doing writs or dailies and start to wonder what's going on in the campaign.. and you figure you'll just "take a peek" no harm done.. right? HA! That is the first slippery step of addiction.. Next you'll be enabling the AvA announcements so that you can always know when someone has taken a scroll.. It all seems so innocent.. at first.
Then you find yourself doing less and less PvE and wanting.. no.. needing to do some PvPing .. you know.. just to take the edge off. Soon, you'll be finding yourself staying up at ungodly hours of the night.. missing family events.. being late for work/school.. putting off normal daily activities in real life because you just need to go help take one more keep, outpost, resource, town.. or protect the runner with the scroll.. and gods help you if you have a stam toon that can run the scroll.. I hear that is a very dark addiction, indeed. I have stayed clear of that because I only run magblades.. but I hear the scroll runners have it pretty bad and it's pretty hard for them to resist going and taking another scroll.. it can be really scary, I hear.
So.. are you sure you wanna take this shadowy path just for a few crystals? I hear skooma is less addicting..
