How did you learn to be a good DPS?

I got fed up with dying a lot when I was new to the game and realised I needed to do something about it, so I started crafting research so that I could make myself some decent gear and it just grew from there. Now I enjoy crafting gear for other lower level players and crafting/farming for decent gear for myself. The target dummy helps as well ofc.

    Define a 'good' DPS..

But really, I kinda suck at most roles except 'healer'.
if I could make another character, their name would be Cries-For-Character-Slots. AKA, I need more.

Been playing a dps character in MMOS since Everquest. So every new MMO I play being a dps just comes easy for me. Plus I've been a gamer since the late 70s. 😁

Only been playing ESO for about 6 months now and in the beginning only solo material, but reading more about it the PvE thing might also appeal to me. (and now I enjoy PvP too, though I'm more of a PvE'er).
When I join a guild and started joining dungeons I had no idea about skills and rotations, sure I added abilities to my bars but I though they where there so I could easily choose different ones sometimes.
Even though I had nice gear and golden weapons I just didn't had the feeling I was that strong.
Testing it on a dummy and I couldn't even reach 10K, but after reading about the rotation and some practising I now manage 20K.
And thats just after 4 practise sessions with the dummy. I could probably finetune the rotation to get more DPS but for now I'm happy to reach this.
So yes rotation is key in getting a higher DPS.

I hit 41k on my new stamblade and I still think I'm bad. Deltia was the first guide I followed because it was so in depth, but it's a little out of date now. Otherwise Alcast, Xynode, and this forum.

Playing other MMOs was definitly a help as each and every MMO has certain mechanics you just cant get around like animation canceling (in whatever form), damage rotations (no matter the complexity. A two-button rotation is also a rotation), cooldown/ressource management, stepping out of red circles, gear/stats optimization and so on.
If you want to get somewhere in that game, in this case ESO ofc you are gonna start googling and trying out stuff ingame that might be interesting and go from there.
Also in my case, few friends from LotRO pulled me over back in the days (they played since launch, I started like few weeks before IC) gave me a good starting guide and helped out alot in general.

By the time I got over 30k it wasn't enough to be good anymore. So maybe soon. Need to get some trials gear. Getting to 30k was from a video and looking at cm to see what was happening.

Ditto most of the above posts, but also learning what felt natural for the rotations. That's what took me the most time. Rotations for one do not necessarily work for all.

VMA. It's why I recommend it to everyone, teachs you about positioning, mechanics, self healing/warding, damage etc. You don't need mega high DPS per say but it teaches you the wider elements of being a decent DD.

Of course if you are chasing numbers then the dummy but honestly for me I find it super dull.

Some random guy on youtube that told me how to weave, and my own intuition, and a lot of calculation.

And then endlessly keeping an eye on the community, the guides, the patch notes to try and get a word on what gear works best. A major issue I find with the game is just how "hidden" the value of a gearset is. Like, they literally tell you everything they do, but the stupid amount of either calculation or testing needed to determine which set of 2 roughly similar sets is best is just flawed. And calculations chance heavily per build, and testing requires either the PTR which takes you out of the "real" game, or you grind and splash cash on potentially useless gear.

Main thing was installing CombatMetrics and getting some people to tell me what sort of DPS I needed to start by aiming for. Then target dummy tests. And grinding, and burning gold on upgrades.

I was a tank at first, so I learned to some extent what kind of damage I could take and how to avoid it.

Then, maelstrom arena was released and I got decimated by it. Setting my goal on the flawless conqueror title forced me to respect mechanics, something very important in my path to become a good DPS.

The rest was just rotation training.
