not more than an urban legend, it could be that the different fish prefer different bait.
iirr from last year, i went with something like 5 worms -> 5 guts -> 5 crawlers and got equal amounts of all fish.

I’ve gotten a dozen each leech and blobfin and only 2 cucumber. I think I had the same experience last year.

Planning on doing this every day with my main, so I need 20 of each fish. I got to 14, 15 and 16 last night before moving on. If you're stopping at one of each, rng is going to hit you, but if you stick it out for a while, most people will have evenly distributed results. I had 7 or 8 blobfin before a single leech and then 11 leeches before 9 blobfin.

I'd bet real money that the rng is programmed and functioning equally across the full user base.

Uhhh, I don't remember. I started this years event with over 20 of each stored from last year. Hoping that gets me through enough quests/characters to get close to all the special writs we need. So far I have 8 of the special writs.

Having caught over 1k New Life Fish, I can confidently say... yeah, they're all pretty much equal. One day, or on one character, you'll never get a cucumber, on another day, with a different character, it'll be the blobfin. Sometimes it's the Leech. They're all equal.

Just use simple bait.

I'd have to say all three are about equal. I've saved leftover fish from the previous two years of New Life events and have 51-56 of each of the 3 types. Bank them and give them to alts and you don't have to fish at all.

None, i got them all in a 3 minute span with 2 extra fish.

In the two days so far, I've found them to be relatively equal.
Got lots of Leeches and Blobfish yesterday, but I had a difficult time hooking a Cucumber yesterday. I caught several today.
It allowed me to ding the angler achievement for the Fish Boon quest today.

If you start with none then whichever you really need for the quest. I got 7 blobfin, and 5 cucumbers before I got my first leech. I stuck around for a while afterwards and had 9 blobfin, 7 cucumbers and 8 leeches when I finally left.

I change to a different bait after every catch. Since doing this, I no longer get the same fish multiply times in a row.

could be coincidence/rng, it looks like:
insect part -> equal amounts
guts -> higher chance of cucumber
worms -> higher chance of leech
crawlers -> higher chance of blobfin

But easiest for 4th.
