In my experience from playing MMOs for so long, Flying Mounts were implemented in older games like WoW because it was their solution to adding mobility to the game for their players. ESO has plenty of mobility built into the game with wayshrines and guild based member porting. ESO simply does not need this feature since you have a better system in place already.

But if I can buy a dragon mount and fly it... I will not complain one second. ;)

Dragonbourne DLC, Summer 2019... make it happen! ha ha

It might be fun to have a flying mount. I use them all the time in Ark Survival. :-)

Probably not. Not sure if there's any official word on it, but it's been brought up for ages, and nada. It would most likely require an investment in redoing most the overland areas like they did in WoW. An investment that I don't see coming, since they can't even invest in getting things like PvP areas to function correctly as they are.

On a personal note, I don't feel a need for it in this game. I can already run my mount at insane speeds, don't feel the need to fly over everything.

Who cares about needs man imagin flying around on the back of a dragon or gryphon. It would be awesome I think they should try and make it happen.

No, it wouldn't be. It would ruin the game. And yes, people have asked for flying mounts/dragon mounts once or twice. Or several *thousand* times. https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/search?Search=flying+mounts Over a hundred pages of threads. The devs have said there will not be flying mounts in the game. Let it die, m'kay?

Flying mounts, as in going high up and all, really isn’t needed in eso, although the zones are large, they’re usually designed well with correctly place Wayshrines.

However, I do feel a gryphon mount is completely possible. It’s size would be the same as the gryphon adds you find in the wilds of Summerset with its running animation being the same as how the pet versions work, where they glide slightly above the ground. Which you could argue the reason your gryphon can’t fly you up higher as it isn’t big/strong/old enough to do so (like the ones in Cloudrest)

If “flying” mounts were to ever be added, this is the closest that it would be

No better way to make the world feel empty then to implement flying mounts.
No one on the ground and everyone in the air.
No more fighting your way through the mobs to the quest item/NPC..just fly right in, dismount, obtain/kill and take off again.

Flying was not good for wow. I hope it never gets implemented in ESO.

    .

Which is why WoW and Final Fantasy both have mechanisms to keep you on the ground until you have completed the main quest lines and essentially discovered the whole area. With the way both games NCP's ignore higher level players it really doesn't matter from a danger standpoint how you get around older areas.

I personally think flying is ok if the area has been designed for it but don't think it works well when developers try to go back to older areas where it was never a thought. In the case of ESO DLC's tend to be too compact and the layout of larger areas doesn't really provide any travel advantage with flight. I think it could be fun if ESO had a chapter designed around flying and/or underwater. These would be the only areas that would support three dimensional travel and have a unique mount strictly for the area. Whether that could be fit into lore I don't know.

Oh dear. If you do not see the scores of large flying creatures already present in Tamriel I fear for your hatless head anyway. Just putting a rider on them will not make them any less regular. Watch out especially in Summerset for the very large catbirds.

Aside from the obvious mechanics and ZOS's penchant for investing little as possible in maintenance and new content, flying mounts would make it all too obvious how ridiculously small most of the zones really are. Staying on the ground, having to maneuver round "mountains" and other obstacles is an artificial way of making real estate seem larger. Flying would negate this cheap trick. Never gonna happen.

Devs have stated no to this in the past due to engine limitations (something about no proper height axis for mobs) but I've been pondering how it could be possible within the limitations of the engine. Granted I truly doubt such a thing would ever be added, but here's my take on how it could be done.

First, we'd have to make it clear that true free-flying mounts (ones that could fly anywhere in all 3 directions) will never happen in ESO. That's the engine limitation mentioned by the devs in the past. The most we could get would be mounts that appear to be flying, like some of the current mobs in the game. While they appear to be flying, they are still in the exact same spot on the map; its only their animation which is currently lifted off of the ground.

This means that "flying" mounts would still function like the current mounts in every way other than appearance. Think of it like how some of your pets "fly"; they're still following you around in the same actual spot, but some have animations that make them appear like they are flying. This is the closest we'd ever see to true flying mounts in the game.

In order to give them "something special" to set them apart from normal mounts, they could give them a special ability that triggers when near a wayshrine, or possibly also when on the world map (non-pvp only): the ability to take you to any wayshrine that you've already unlocked, but without the gold cost. To keep them as fair as possible, they could have a cooldown added (flavor it as needing to recharge their energy from the long flight) that would be equivalent in time to the normal wayshrine gold-cost cooldown. If they added a fun "flying upwards" animation each time you used the ability coupled with an opposite "landing" animation when you arrived, this would go a long ways to give players the feeling of flight while still keeping the mechanics fairly in line with what we already see in-game. The ability to mitigate the wayshrine gold cost is enough to give this kind of flying mount value, yet would be in no way OP due to the ability to already port for free any time by using the Group and Guild menus.

It'd either allow us access to restricted areas (which is probably not what ZOS wants), or it would prevent us from going there due to an invisible wall; so what's the point?
