This thread was super fun to read. I started playing when Morrowind came out, my first character was a sorcerer who used mostly Magicka skills but I didn't like staves for some reason and used swords. Oh and I was wearing ebon because I thought the orbs were OP. I feel sorry for people who ended up in WGT or something with me. Eventually I answered a call to do vet pledges with guildies and after declaring I was running rattlecage the guild leader crafted me julianos and explained enchants and skills. Since then I've gotten better and better. I'm now a core healer/dd for the hardest vet trials in game!! And it's still super fun, I've always wanted to be good at pvp but haven't gotten there yet.

    Hi Protossyder

On going back and reading your OP again, I had indeed interpreted your post incorrectly. For that I apologise. :(

I think the first time I 'woke' up was about two to four months after I had gotten ESO, I had no idea that you could activate the way shrines to use for free. I had been burning gold for no reasons even though the shrines were 20 m away and that there was a cost-cooldown associated with that travel.

About that same point I had finally started to try the crafting skills, and *eureka* realized I could craft set items that were pretty unique and that traits were a thing to try to learn, The game doesn't outwardly point you to start researching them easily. Those traits are instrumental in granting passive abilities or skills; for example Prosperous, may it rest in peace and how I loved you. Learning that food buffs were a thing too and not permanent was also a learning experience.

The third time was when I was less than 160cp; I was using dropped sets in the worst way. I had mixed sets light and medium that were not ideal for any build. I had mismatched weapons, and couldn't figure out why I had terrible dps. I was thankfully told on a voice chat that attributes were what your damage scaled from. I would have to choose whether I wanted to do physical vs magical damage and was briefly explained which options I had with my then current character. I am very happy how far my Stamblade has come.

I guess my final one was when I made my first healer many months ago, a Khajiit Nightblade. At the time he was gonna be a very selfish self heals sort of build. My first random normal was tempest island. I used my resto skills and my class skills too. We died multiple times to Stormreeve Neidir. After that dungeon I was whispered to stop trying to be a healer on my character and that I should stick to DPS. I checked my skills and at the time i could count 5 skills or 9 morphs that provided group healing and utility to dungeon/pvp runs. I fully focused on healing and now have a fully competent group friendly healer.

I am still doing what i like. I use those skills i like and where i think they work for *me*. I tried a few metas but they suck for me. Armor sets i slightly adjust when i feel i can go for a bit more damage/heal or if i need a bit more survivability. But thats it.

Only way to play. if you're not playing how you like you're doing it wrong. don't listen to ANYONE who insists you play their way.
Playing your character the way your character should play is all that matters. Play as well as you can but never betray the character. Doing so would make playing an mmoRPG pointless.

My main is a Dark Elf DK and in the beginning I was using all sorts of random gear and skills and tried my best.

Some where in 2016 I woke up when I asked my guild mates after a dungeon run how well I did as a DPS and one bluntly said I can do better and pointed me to Deltia's website.

I admit I was a little annoyed at the time but after checking out that website and others I discovered more optimal mag/stam setups, gear, rotations, etc. and it helped me improve. Looking back I am glad that guild mate was very blunt to me lol.

I come from World of Tanks, it could be said that TESO is my first MMO.

And it's the first time i played games of this kind so in many ways everything was new to me.

I used to use Ice Staff before they changed them, i remember in my first trial that somebody said: Burn The Boss!

I stop my attack and do nothing. At the end the leader of the trial who is also a member of the guild asked me why i stopped attacking, i told him that i could not burn the boss because i had Ice Staffs ... the mofo only laughed.

It took me a long time to "wake up" all the nerd terminology was new to me even today there are many things that i do not understand.

I woke up around a year after playing; that was around 200 something CP. I started learning a rotation and then hit skyreach to get to max CP since I was into trials and wanted to do the vet trials. Helped to meet endgame players or at least raid-guilds who showed me da way.

I don't think I "woke up" until people pointed out I was sleeping lol.

Had a similar experience, but once I was "woke", and did make really well thought out builds... I found out you can only win if you play meta in PvP, or fight someone inexperienced. So many sets and abilities in this game are not viable, I would argue at least 75% of it all is not viable. And that's just sad. That's why I decided to quit and go back to World of Warcraft... No diversity, everyone is the same, and the game doesn't even have spells just for fun, like breathing underwater or slow falling. I really want to get back into ESO, but it still needs a lot of work to not be boring.

Yeah until they create real choices and make it so the "meta" isnt more than like 2-5% better (cuz theorycrafters will always come up with some "best" thing) there isn't any point to having a system where you can choose your own abilities.

been playing MMO's since Everquest...I "woke up" a long time ago...yet with each new game, there are always things to learn. No one is an expert(though many like to tell you they are), there is always room to improve. :)

started playing ESO many moons ago, almost the same experience as yours. It's my first MMO. At the very beginning I was like...what the oblivion? And now I'm like...Ah! This is my favorite fishing hole!

In PvE, I woke up the first time I had to fight Dosha when she was brutal. Back in the beginning, you learned or you died.

In PvP, well, my alarm clock never went off...

My first year on the game was 99.9% RPing. There was no need to rush to get the end content and I was barely V3. Then the focus of the RP community shifted away from TES theme (to Vampires and GOT) and I was left bored with nothing to do. I asked a friend to get me in Cyrodiil which I had avoided. I was invited to a PVP guild and that is the best thing that could happened to me on this game. The PVP guild became my online family and Cyrodiil became home. Yes, there are times when I miss RPing. But I wouldn't trade my PVP family for the world.

Biggest improvement on console was realizing that placing skills you have to aim on the left and right triggers makes it easier to move and attack.
