What do you mean by "woke up?" Because by your definition, I probably won't ever wake up :D If you mean something a little deeper, like how you see your place within the game, or how you shape the game to suit you, then I think it's still an evolving process for me.

I'm a solo-only story player, so a lot of what you say doesn't really apply to me now that I'm in the CP system. I can pretty much do whatever I want and never die--unless I fall off a cliff-- which feels great, honestly. I can play story stuff forever here-- for years, probably. I'm about a third of the way through clearing all the non-dungeon quests in the AD now, and I still have two DLCs I haven't touched yet.

The hard part for me is trying to ration how much story I feed each toon before I get sick of them, how to avoid getting stuck in the plethora of grindy tasks, how to avoid getting sucked into the next pursuit of shiny. I hate that I love shiny sometimes :D It's a continuing process of self-assessment and self-reflection, and testing my limits.

    So, working on it ;)

Well, we are obviously different types of players. I can't enjoy solo story content anymore, it's just not enough. I like playing with or against other players, I like being competitive. I simply like being good (or the best :D ) . So I can definitely call it "waking up" for me.
    Same applies to other games.

LOL, well I'm hopeless so I'll never be the best. Sometimes I can shoot for mediocre on my best days ;)

Well, best of luck in your personal quest!

    Pretty much this.

I woke up to the fact I will and should never play a serious DPS character and make others suffer for my suckiness, instead I only play healers and tanks for group content.

No no no, you might be lucid dreaming, you have to really wake up. From a DD's and occasional tank's perspective healing seems like true horror. Not only do you have to play a rotation (for optimal uptimes), you also have to look after everyone else in the group...
Get a BiS setup and practice your rotation, that's it, you are a 40k+ DD now

When Maelstrom Arena was released. I felt like a very powerful templar tank, could do anything(ICP was very hard at that time and I didn't have trouble clearing it), but got destroyed by vMA. Then, I made a DPS setup, started searching how to optimize my build, and been playing that way since.

It took forever. Our ideas of waking up may be a bit different though. The vast majority of my time spent in Tamriel has been PvE focused. Highly centered around questing first, then perfect gear set combinations, cp placement, rotations, meta setups etc.

The first year was leveling through questing. Looting everything that could be looted. Going back into different zones after over leveling so they became easier. Crafting/ researching/ farming/ eventually breaking down and grinding the last few levels out.

Then I got into dungeons. At the time no one wanted to do normal stuff because drops were Vet 15 and no chance at Monster Set, also you couldn’t trade dungeon stuff back then... I don’t remember exactly, but it’s better now. I struggled pretty hard in most vet stuff, but eventually learned them.

Through all this time I only had one toon and had tried different roles on it. The thaught of grinding up a new one was undaunting. Now I have several.

Moving on, sets have been changed, Mundus Stones have been changed, new sets introduced, meta changes. Sorcs were terrible, then great; same with nightblade. Templar was OP, DK was OP, Warden diddnt exist...

Then I got into trials and found them to be epic. I think they were stuck at vet 14 for some time. Don’t remember. They were more something to run for fun. There were different sets in trials at that time. The gear drops got changed over time. You might have been able to sell them at one time don’t remember specifics.

Trials got better. Changed to CP160. Scaled. Wish they would go back to scaling for trials. That would be cool. You could have a level 45 go into trial to set it Vet....because the gear drops would be CP 160 instead of CP 150 or less. At the time some claimed that was an exploit....it was great. 2 or 3 people could go into Sanctum Ophidia and nuke the whole place in about 10 minutes.

Eventually started making other toons and learning their quirks. I got to know very well the reasoning behind meta class things and play how you want. I just kind of accepted it. Once you get through acceptance that this is the way things are in this game and everything else may be viewed as inferior; this may be your awakening. Virtually anything you put together and find a way to make work is still not good as.

While I still acknowledge the Meta Power, it doesn’t work well or sit well with me. Another awakening may happen. To be this good you practically become a human macro. It’s the real cookie cutter, copy and paste play style that I’ve grown to hate about this game.

The only place your creativity and real skill may come into play is PvP. And it’s not that great. A laggy buggy mess at times. There’s meta type setups here with some variation. Gear that carries. CP that make things work that wouldn’t otherwise. And being straight outnumbered regardless how skilled you are.

I hated PvP for the longest time. It took awhile to fall meh on PvE, but the homogenization of PvE classes, setups group composition and watching several core teams and guilds implode through frustration have really killed it lately.

Now Cyrodil and battlegrounds have become home. This is the last wake up call. I don’t want to mindlessly stack and burn, plug some memorized rotation through choreographed boss fights anymore. It’s lame af at this point.

The Devs have stated they want us to be able to come straight from the battlefield in Cyrodil and into Dungeons and trials. That was a long time ago. I think they gave up on the idea. You will not likely be very successful. Got to build for one or the other.

It’s a big game. Find what makes you happy.

LOL. Pretty much the same thing. Managed to reach VR8 on my Stamina DK with no idea how. Didn't know about Crafting at all. Was using picked up armor sets when I could find them. Nothing matched. Couldn't beat the three NPC "mobs" at all and was basically wondering what all these abilties were for.

Then a guild found me wandering around and offered me a membership. They showed me dey whey! And the rest is history. So for about the first year or so in game I was lost and confused. For sure.

I was certainly one of those cp500 players who knew nothing. I treated it like a solo game and that was fine. I had played other MMO's, knew the way it worked, just never wanted or cared here.

The eyes opened slowly, first through a mayhem event, then a witches festival. These events got me into the other content, and i wasn't as afraid once i did it a few times. So i looked for a guild that ran trials to learn. They took me into VSO and i thought my world would end lol. Three hours later, we cleared and i was hooked. I learned to change my aoe colors, back out the camera, targeting , et al.

Now normal content seems trivial. I'm not the core piece of a vet team but im not dead weight anymore either. The change was dramatic and fast. But i certainly am happier playing now. I dont fear death, or bad attitudes. Mute and respawn are a click away :)

Before ESO, I had only dabbled in some MMOs like Rift and Everquest and Champions of Regnum. I didn't have a solid background in MMOs like a lot of people.

I have two wake up moments...I remember the first time I was asked what my DPS was...and having no clue. Back before I even used addons...

Sometimes all it takes is one awesome person to explain some things. My PVP GM is this person for me. She helped me understand things like how my weapon damage scaled off of my max stamina, and that I didn't need to spend attributes in all 3 for me to have sustain. She helped me understand what weapons I should use. I used to be a mess before I got those things sorted.

A little knowledge goes a long way!

Wow, this is now my favorite thread. Thanx for the stories.
However I must report that I joined closed Beta in Dec. 2013 in excess of a month after my wife, this was my first MMO. Since my wife knew a lot, I just asked her about things. I was already into using forums for game stuff, as I had been doing so for Morrowind, Oblivion, and most importantly Skyrim. So "I did my homework," researched concepts and what worked best, but like others here kept doing mostly solo PvE 'till vet level. My story may not be as interesting, because I started out with knowledge of many concepts that most of you talked about, so I didn't "wake up," I have always been awake. I even researched guilds shortly after launch and joined three or four of the most elite trading guilds around at that time. Had a tough time keeping up with the guilds' requirements though, as the characters that I played were non-vet for quite awhile, but I did it.

But I got fed-up with the constant researches, required sales & tickets, and took a 1.5yr. hiatus from the game (played Sniper Elite 4 Co-op after the solo campaign). But now I'm back, and my main toons feel pretty good, almost OP, and I've been mentoring a new player to ESO that was playing SE4 with me previously (he is now past mentoring stage). He is my best buddy, and we have a blast playing ESO. I am now reaping the benefits of CP160 for the first time, with the improved game stretched out vastly before us. They now have fixed the Templar (it was nerfed right before my hiatus) and so my #1 char feels powerful once again, I love it! But my biggest thrill lately has been tanking my DKs.

And oh yeah, yes my wife still plays too.

Good luck and happy gaming to you all.

I got ESO in its first week.
As an Oblivion and Skyrim player, I was used to stacking attribute points into health, so that was what I did on my first character. She was a Redguard stamblade - my first character in any TES game is always a Redguard, and I always pick melee over magic to start with, so that at least was fortunate... not that long ago she became a magblade but might revert.
This was of course prior to 1T. By the time I got to the 2nd faction storyline, given I'd stacked all points into health, she couldn't even solo a dolmen. And I didn't know anything about sets or even how to barswap... Grahtwood (PS4 EU) was pretty much deserted (timezone issues -_-) so I quit and went to play Fallout 4.

Came back probably January of the following year when I heard a "friend" was playing - though he was on NA. So I made a Khajiit stamblade and played a bit with him... until we had a falling out. But he did teach me how to play. I'm grateful for that, but he's still an a**hat.

Sadly a lot of friends have quit and those who still play are 8 hours behind so I rarely play with anyone these days... as all I'm doing is writs and occasional VMA attempts idk why I'm still here, tbh.

This is the only MMO I have played.

I started playing in 2014 during beta and I decided to play without any outside help of any kind - no guides, no websites, no internet help of any kind - I’d just rely on what I could learn myself through gameplay.

The game was a total mystery and it was a lot of fun discovering and working stuff out. I had a bag and bank full of stuff that I kept because I didn’t know whether it was important or valuable.

I got sick of AD players though who I’m guessing saw me as the ultimate noob - which I was - but on purpose.

In January 2015 I rolled my mDK main in EP - this toon has been my main since then. I see this as when I really started playing the game as this toon just walked through the first 50 levels and into PVE and PVP end game.

I had a lot of fun playing blind but I don’t think I’d recommend it. ESO is a big, complex game and knowledge is definitely power.

I can't say I had such an experience.

There was a time when I found places like these forums and realized there were these things I was "supposed to" do that I wasn't doing. For a brief time, I followed bits of that because I was "supposed to." I started falling asleep. How I was "supposed to" play the game was not how I wanted to play the game, and I did not at all enjoy how I was "supposed to" play the game. Had I continued on that path, I would have gone from being awake to falling asleep. I jostled myself before I fell into that catatonia. Haven't looked back since. Now, I watch in mild amusement at these people chasing the way one is "supposed to" play the game, and shake my head sadly.

It was a huge learning curve for me as I have never played any MMO games before

Didn't know about strategy in combat and how to build a character

Even the crafting was all over the place and I didn't start researching items for some time

BUT it has been fun all the way and at least I am still enthralled with the game and still learning .

Most games I find are repetitive after a while, but this game is quite large and has lots to hold my interest

I love the fact they do events to keep up the momentum
