Caltrops Question

I made my first stamina character, a Sorcerer, and i like it a lot, but they all say that Caltrops is a must.

I only use this character for quests and maybe normal dungeons, is it really necessary as they say? Could not replace it by e.g. adic sparay?

I did not want to do pvp.

You can do overland and normals naked. Caltrops are not necessary for what you want to do.

you do not need caltrops for questing, no. depends on what normal dungeons you are doing. standard or dlc.

For normal dungeons and questing caltrops isn’t a necessity and you can easily swap out for acid spay. For more challenging content caltrops is a very strong ability. Even single target it’s a good chunk of your dps.

Getting caltrops isn’t too hard to be honest, especially if you can time your pvp with low population bonus or just doing BGs but if that’s all you want to do with that alt you can really play as you like.

only the daily random, I can solo any normal dungeon with my magicka sorcerer, i hope without caltrops not having problems if i do a daily random, regardless of the dungeon.

    thanks all!

Caltrops is a must if you want to reach meta-level DPS.

You can do okay without Caltrops, but you are losing a DOT from your rotation. Where are you going to make up the missing DPS? Acid Spray will do a little, but it's not going to make up for Caltrops.

DPS works by layering DOTs and then doing single target damage until you reapply your DOTs. My stam sorc has Endless Hail, Hurricane and Caltrops as AOE DOTs. You'd be missing one of those.

Moreover, stam sorc really needs those AOEs because much of our self healing can be fueled by Crit Surge. Those AOEs generate lots of crits, fueling our self-healing. So again, you'll be missing out on one source of self-healing.

So can you do okay without Caltrops?

Probably? Depends on what you think is okay. 10k DPS? Definitely. 15k DPS? Probably, depending on your build. I think I was pulling about 15k with a non-meta build that didnt use Caltrops because I hadn't PVPed enough on that character. But I didnt hit over 20k until I started using a proper rotation that stacks DOTs including Caltrops with single target damage.

    Hope that helps.

Play how you want to play. If your build is achieving your goals then all is happy in esoland

Then go get the skill, when neither dps has to carry the other you're just finished that much faster and can go onto other things

Caltrops and its morphs are not at all required, and although they're under the alliance war category, they are not PvP-specific. However they can also be used to good benefit in PvE as others have noted. You would need to earn enough AP to unlock them, however if you don't want to venture into the PvP areas of Cyrodiil and the Imperial City DLC, you can use Battlegrounds to earn enough AP. There are 3 teams who fight each other, and althought the top two teams get more, the last place team still gets a nice chunk of AP just for showing up. Also, as you play them, you get more accustomed to them, and after a while it's not so much of a chore and you may start to like them. I did this during the Midyear Mahem event when AP was double, and I have Caltrops available to all of my characters now. I don't necessarily use it on all of them, but it is unlocked just in case I need it, on a build by build basis.

bottom line as stated above, play the way you want to play and make the builds you want. Take the advise given to you here and elsewhere, and make your own decisions.

PS: you got a great username, may we call you Cheech?

Just do a couple of BG matches each day and you'll have them in no time. Don't be put of by PVP, even the good players die a lot to.

Outside of Meta score runs, trying to get every drop of DPS; Not necessary in the slightest.
In "BiS" etc it accounts for around 6% of your DPS. And even if you just remove it, it won't be that bad, as you can put a passive FG skill on the bar for a little more bow bar damage and will have time for 1 more front bar spammable.
All in all, as long as your build isn't completely ridiculous, and your rotation is on point; you can clear all content in the game (and will probably be +50% DPS in PUGs)
If you don't like PVP don't force it on yourself.
    Have fun and good luck.

If this is the case just go get your caltrops. Trust me I know it sucks. I got them on my tank. Do you know what happens to pve spec’d tanks in PvP?

It will seem so daunting but in hind sight it will be just a brief misery for forever being better and having more fun.

For a lot of content on stam sorc i have done it without caltrops. Repeatedly done vMA without Caltrops. So it's not "necessary."

Overall though Razor Caltrops is a solid DPS boost when applied together with Endless Hail.

I'd advise getting Caltrops unlocked and then test what suits you and your playstyle.
