Would be nice.
Warframe recently cleaned up old, unused assets and recompressed pretty much everything to modern standards. (Only for consoles I believe)
The result? A drop from 48 GB to 24 GB. They literally halved the game's size on our HDD.
ESO would do well to do the same as its the single biggest game I've ever seen on Playstation. This is actually awful for PS players because when we download patches, the system goes through a "copying" process where it makes a copy of the ENTIRE game incase the install of the patch gets bungled. This copying process naturally takes a helluva long time, and when updates come out I download patches within 5 minutes, and then wait 50 for the system to copy the entire game. Reducing game size correlates with reducing the copying process for us. So yeah +1 from a PS player, we need this.
Every other game I know makes an effort to reduce file sizes except ESO / ZOS...

Is it though? Other games have reduced file sizes. This game is huge and it takes up half the space on my PS4. When I look at other huge games, they don't take up nearly as much space and still have much better graphics. I do agree that they shouldn't do this if I will reduce the quality of the graphics though.

Get faster internet.

Huh. Every time I turn around, I'm seeing articles about how the latest games & remasters are larger than ever, and when anyone complains about it they get shouted down by "omg, people complaining about storage in 2018?! Get moar HDD!"
But maybe that's just the PC side of things.

Compression doesn't have degrade quality - see my post above about Warframe. They halved the games size merely by recompressing everything with new up-to-date methods, and their game suffered no loss of quality either in graphics, performance or anything.
Same way putting stuff in an .rar file doesn't cause it to degrade, it's just a compression method at the end of the day.
It is true you could also butcher assets to make them take up less space - but when compression is a thing that would just be silly tbh.
Can someone explain why MMOs are different to single-player and regular multi-player games in this respect? Why does running online and having more people on screen at the same time mean the game needs more and/or bigger files installed on the computer?
It's not a huge problem for me at the moment, but if there is something ZOS can do to reduce the file size without affecting the graphics I certainly wouldn't object. It's currently the biggest program on my PC and last time I switched hard drives I deleted and re-downloaded it instead of copying it across because it doesn't take that long on my internet, and I thought it might reduce the file size by removing some old, unused files but it didn't make any difference.Kiralyn2000 wrote: »Every other game I know makes an effort to reduce file sizes except ESO / ZO$...

That's not an option for console players. Not sure about Xbox but PS4 hard drives are small (physically) laptop hard drives and last time I checked the biggest one available is 2TB and you can only have one at a time. It is possible to connect bigger hard drives but they won't fit inside the case, and of course the case isn't designed to have external wires except for the power cable and HDMI, so you'd have to drill holes in it or otherwise jury-rig something to make it work (or leave it open, which then runs into the issue of dust getting in).

Are you certain Zos does not compress the files?

The result? A drop from 48 GB to 24 GB. They literally halved the game's size on our HDD. *(There was absolutely no quality lost, Warframe now performs better than ever and looks just as stylish as it did before - downgrading appearances does not have to be a factor. It's about compression.)
What games is OP speaking of? The second responder compares ESO to a game that is not an MMORPG, just has a little grouping available, so it would and should be smaller.
The download time for ESO is long because it is slow for whatever reason and seems to come in pieces.
In addition, a notable announcement we want to make is that our game client has tremendously reduced in size where its 27 GB now
