A warning for ESO? Another 2014 MMO turning off it's servers next month....

The hype around Wildstar was pretty significant when it was released and I remember a big bunch of various guildies quitting ESO to switch to Wildstar.

But next month, it is shutting down. Hopefully, ESO will scoop up some of the departing players?

But I would encourage ZoS to take note of how fast things can go bottoms up....

umm... these are not even on the same planet. litteraly or figuratively. wildstar might have been hyped by the "we want a hardcore old school mmo!" players, but it was flundering from the start in part because it was trying to cater to "old school hardcore mmo" players and in part because wildstar bugs make ESO ones look inconsequential in comparison.

it had unever leveling, you think DLC dungeons are inaccesible, you aint seen NOTHING yet not untill you saw wildstar attunements and condition they were in especialy at launch. both wildstar and ESO were in a very similar position at one point. except ESO got Tamriel unlimited and recovered and then some, while wildstar... never did.

to all of you that never heard of it - it could possibly be because sci-fi MMO's don't interest you as much. but it WAS a pretty hyped game with fabulous trailers and a fair amount of promise. of course it got a fabled wow killer treatment by the fans, of course it did nothing of a sort. however, its problems and there are MANY - make ESO problems pale into insignificance in comparison.

I played it briefly, it even had a fun story and some interesting mechanics, but it never quite managed to suck me in. Sad to hear it's going but it was one of several MMO's that came out around the same time that where all trying to cash in on the MMO fad. Most of them haven't done well.

Just a reminder of how little is required for some MMOs to keep the lights on. My eyes hurt from rolling so hard.

Wildstar was your hardcore MMO designed for hardcore players by a bunch of ex Blizzard employees who wanted anything BUT another wow.

    ESO is nothing like that.

Casuals make up the bulk of any MMO and keep it going....EXCEPT for Wildstar...a game that didn't want them.

Do Wildstar and ESO actually have anything in common, other than being MMOs?

I did hear about it when it was released (even had a friend who played in the open beta) and it seemed like a very, very different game to me. Wildstar was a weird combination of extremely cartoonish graphics (which made WoW look serious) and over-the-top gameplay and effects, and an intention to focus on 'hardcore' difficult PvE gameplay.

I think the crazy style put off some people, and the effort to appeal only to hardcore players put off a lot more and then problems with the game disappointed some of those who did get it. After that there weren't many people left, relatively speaking, and it seems to have been slowing scaling down ever since so it's not surprising they've finally shut it down completely.

A flash game by Kabam called Edgeworld stayed on longer I think. All you had to do in that game was to build your base by purchasing items from the store. They even stopped changing graphics of buildings for higher levels eventually.

If that turd of a game can survive I think ESO has a hell lot of time to go. I love this game.

I stopped playing two years ago because I got married and busy traveling and going out of the house (I know I know), however, I am back and this time on PS4 and I am in love.

Been playing since Morrowind days and I just can't stop playing.

ESO tops the charts and releases content every quarter. If the parent company thought it was tanking it wouldn't do that. Probably brings loads of cash so it will keep going for 10+ more years. WoW is 15 years old, has cartoonish graphics but still millions of active players.

Except ESO, from its release, has focused on a very different player base than Wildstar, and it didn't have near the bugs, and it was managed better...

This game has something no other MMO has ever had and wont ever have till they decide to release a new one. Tamriel and everything that goes with it. I just don't see it ending unless ZOS wants it to so they can push us to the next TES MMO.

ESO and Wildstar are two very, very different games. I played Wildstar quite a bit and it very much was the "hardcore old school raiding MMO" that the internet said it wanted but never played. Literally everything in that game was designed to funnel players into 40 player raids.

ESO takes a more "fictional life" approach. The world is more conducive to just living a virtual life and chilling out. I dont think Zos has too much to worry about. They didn't build their game around the idea that everyone should want to do the least popular form of content known to the MMO industry, and anyone who doesn't like is a scrub that just needs to git gud. So they're not going to hemorrhage their player base like Wildstar did.

Wildstar did have awesome housing though... Zos could take a few pointers from Carbine there. The rest can be ignored.

ESO vs. Wildstar on Steam @ ~22:20 (edit: local time) on a Tuesday evening.
    15K+ in-game versus.. zero?!

    Lol.

I don't think these two are even remotely comparable.

I seriously doubt that, just based on the low viewership both on twitch and youtube. Still ESO has a healthy population, i don't see it going away any time soon.

Nor is it counting the console players.
So the amount of players currently logged into ESO may even be 3x higher than what is showing.

Whereas three times zero is still zero. ;)
(Edit: I get what you mean and there are probably some people playing Wildstar right now.
But the fact remains that its numbers can't hold a candle to ESO's.)

I'm pretty sure anybody working in the gaming business since... pretty much forever... is fully aware of how fast the bottom can drop-out from under them. Ask Atari, way back in the 2600 age, or Gazillion, more recently (and there are others more recent than that -- point being, it's a constant possibility).

Comparing whatever is happening with... *checks notes* Wildstar... to ESO, and couching it as a warning is kind of silly in that regard.
