Should I worry about my build?

For background. I'm an Altmer Templar. I am fairly new, and have only gotten to level 5. I have always over thought things when it comes to ES games. So far I have been putting one skill point in each attribute as I get it, and skills I just get what sounds useful. I am currently using dual wield weapons, and for now light armor. With all this in mind I need to know if I am doing things reasonable. I don't plan on doing PvP, and I mostly just got this game to quest. If there is a certain build I should aim for, how do I begin the long term preparations?

As others have mentioned, you will get a free attribute and skill respec scroll around level 45. So anything you do until then can be reset for free. After that you can always respec again, but you will have to pay gold. For now, just focus on what you like. Being an altmer, your class is better suited for Magicka abilities and weapons versus Stamina. So destruction staff will be your main weapon as a damage dealer. That doesn't mean you can't run dual wield though or another stamina weapon type. Those that run PvE group content that want to maximize damage will choose either Stam or Magicka and put all their attributes into one, but if you just plan on doing quests and overland stuff you can surely spread your points out as you see fit.

At level 5 it is hard to go wrong.

What is best is to level up each skill at least until the morph because you never know what you will end up using. Many skills have been reworked over the past few years and at least one Templar skill was completely replaced.

It is helpful to have at least one each of the other two armors. There is an undaunted passive you be able to get later that benefits from both and might as well get the extra armor passives that are beneficial. HA Juggernaut adds 2% max health as an example.

Beyond that, without knowing your goals there is not much to day.

The good news is that the templar is a good class and the leveling system artificially buffs you until you reach CP160 so you can experiment and try all kinds of things to learn what you enjoy. By the time you reach CP160 you should have a good idea of how you want to play. By then, you might consider changing your skills and attributes up (can do in game and is not that expensive) to more focus on either magicka or stamina depending largely upon your weapon of choice.

BTW, it is not a bad thing to save some SP so you know you have them when you want them. I generally do not stress about the passives much when leveling. That was from my first character over 4 years ago. yes, some are more beneficial than others.

If you want to worry about your build, though you certainly dont have to, here's the basics.

You'll want to chose stamina or magicka to put all your attributes in as you level. Your class skills will start magicka, but you can choose stamina-costing morphs. If you choose magicka, use a destruction staff or restoration staff. If you chose stamina, use a bow, dual wield, two-handed, or one hand and shield.

This is important for 2 reasons:

1. Your magicka-costing skills generally get more powerful the more magicka you have. Your stamina-costing skills generally get more powerful the more stamina you have. So do your light sttacks with those weapons listed above.
2. Heavy attacks from those weapons listed above restore magicka or stamina, respectively. Also, light armor buffs magicka and medium armor buffs stamina. (Heavy Armor is largely used by tanks and you'll probably prefer Light/medium armor for questing.)


Now, you can do a hybrid build, but those are generally only effective at very low levels due to the extra stats from battleleveling or with a particular build using the set Pelinal's Aptitude at high level.

(If you use magicka, I suggest using Wall of Elements from destruction staff in every fight to do damage over time to multiple enemies. If you use stamina, Volley from Bow does the same thing.)


It is not necessary to worry over much about your build while leveling as long as you keep your gear fairly close to your level. However, I find that it's easier to transition to group content or harder boss fights if you already have a stamina or magicka build in mind because of the way damage scales from either stamina or magicka.

Unlike other ESO games, its much easier to switch things up later. You are actually going to get at least one respec scroll as you level so you can do it for free. Its also relatively easy to do even if you are paying gold for it. So yeah try things out that sound interesting.
There is plenty of YouTube videos and the like if you want specific build or "how too" info. But as others have said, its good to level a in multiple areas. In order to make that easier later, and because there are some bonuses to having some things spread out, like wearing at least one piece of each armor weight.

You will have plenty of opportunities to change your build around later. Not a big deal until you hit cp160, after that you will have max gear and can start investing in long term builds.

Main thing is if you’re happy with your class. Everything else can be changed. Race, name, skills, appearance, attributes. All changeable. Class is not.

Templar are in a very very good spot next patch. At the moment dont worry about build too much, you've got plenty of time to decide what you want to do (Healer/Tank/Stam DD/Mag DD).

As a rule:

Stamina DD = duel wield/bow/2h - Max stamina/weapon damage/weapon crit/physical penetration - Medium armour

Magicka DD = fire staves/lightning staves - Max magicka/spell damage/spell crit/spell penetration - light armour(1 medium 1 heavy for later on in the game)

Healer = Resto stave/lightning stave - max magicka/spell damage/spell crit/healing done - light armour(1 medium 1 heavy for later on in the game).

Tank = Sword and board/Ice stave/Lightning stave - Max health/Resistances (not crit unless PvP)/Healing done - heavy armour

Build wise https://alcasthq.com is a great place to look, however if your main aim is to quest you can use anything. I'd opt for magicka though since survival is a lot easier

Get a fire staff, lay down Elemental Blockade+Spear Shards and kill everything with Jabs.
You'll be good with that playstyle until you reach level 50.

IMPORTANT! This was said but I will be more specific. You want to level ALL your class skills, armor skills, and MORE THAN LIKELY your weapon skills.

To do this you will need to equip at least one of each armor type while leveling, heavy, medium, and light. To level weapon skills you just need to have at least one skill from that weapon line on you skill bar. Even if you choose, say, two hander, you can level up destruction staff by simply adding a destruction staff skill to your bar. You won't be able to use it but it will level the skill line up.

Same goes for your class skills. Have at least one of each equipped on your skill bar and then both bars when you hit level 15. Anyone here will agree, it's really nice to have everything leveled up in case you want to switch weapons or playstyles. If you want to tank, and sword and shield line is at, like 6 still, that sucks.

Lots of things has been said already, just one thing i would like to add, while leveling up you will get respec scrolls, so it doesnt really matter if you made a minor mistake at the beginnig, you can fix this later once you find your playstyle.

Soany great suggestions. I am starting to the no builds are more endgame stuff for the people who do the crazy stuff. I just want to experience all the story quests and maybe play with my friends every now and then. So I think I'm good, just gonna focus on what I think is good, cool, and damaging. An important note I didn't see mentioned: if you are going to be a crafter, begin researching traits on item IMMEDIATELY. Any time you see a piece of armor or weapon with a magnifying glass next to it, squirrel it away (unless you already have an item in that trait) and start researching. It can take a long, long time by the end and I wish someone had told me to start about a year before I did.

Honestly I would start but enjoying the class. You can respec with gold or use that free respec you get from the level up rewards. The first thing to do is learn what you like. So go explore skills and the world it'self
