Wolfhunter PvE Tanking Discussion

Hello everyone! With the recent changes to how enchantments work, I think I have enough reasons to create this thread. There are few things that needs discussing. Let's start!

1- Weapon Skills proc the enchant of the weapon they were fired from.

This creates so many possibilities for everyone including tanks. Let's theorycraft a bit, shall we?

So we have few choices on how to use this change for our benefit. First thing that we need to make clear is how we benefit from this. As most of you know, Destruction Staves for tanks are pretty common at this point, especially Ice and Lightning Staves. In Live server, we can use Blockade and it procs our front bar enchantment. In PTS, and soon in Live too, Blockade will proc the Staff enchantment instead. So this brings the question, what do we use on our staves?

First option everyone had in mind is putting Crusher on the staff and Weakening or whatever they want on the 1h/s. Here is the result with that. I simply used Blockade and didn't even bar swapped to 1h/s. Blockade had 100% uptime. As you can see, it even has more ticks than the actual combat time because I refreshed early to make sure it is up 100% and we got a 98% uptime on Crusher.

This time, I'll show what we get if I enchant my 1h/s with Weakening and keep the Crusher on Staff while still keeping Blockade up. I literally light attack spammed the dummy while keeping the Blockade up. As you see, the Crusher uptime didn't change but we got a considerable amount of Weakening. Now the next question is, how do we improve this further and why can't we get 100% Crusher?

Crusher_Staff_Weakening_1hs.jpg

The reason we can't get 100% Crusher is because Blockade ticks every second. If you did this with an Infused Bow for example, using Endless Hail, the result would be 100% without a doubt. The small issue is, Endless Hail starts dealing damage 2 seconds after we cast it. So you have to make sure you cast it while Crusher has at least 2 seconds duration or you will have downtime on it.

But do we want to spend 3k Stamina every 10 seconds to do this? That's way too much, isn't it? Let's look at other options. What if we simply use 1h/s skills to proc Crusher? I will simply cast Pierce Armour> wait 4.5 seconds> Heroic Slash> wait 4.5 seconds> repeat.

1hs_Crusher.jpg

Finally! We reached 100% uptime by simply rotating 2 skills! BUT of course there is a downside to this as well. We can't use those while stunned or if we are away from the boss. There are many fights that will force you to move away from the boss or you'll be stunned. What do we do then? It's simple. If there is such a fight, we use Crusher on the Staff as well! Put down the Blockade (or Endless Hail if you want to) and watch the Crusher procs while you are running around doing mechanics.

Anyway, I hope the whole Crusher thing is sorted out. Let's move to other options.

I know there are many casual tanks out there who don't care about any of this Crusher stuff. They want sustain, they want CC, they want to be tanky. Well, I got you. Here is something that you can use to increase your Stamina sustain. This strat will help you permablock, especially if you are playing a class that has low stamina sustain like a Templar while blocking. Even though it looks like a small boost, it makes a huge difference. We basically put an Absorb Stamina enchant on our staff and keep Blockade on the enemy as much as we can. Every time it procs, we get 461 stamina. As you see, the cooldown on it is 2 seconds but even though it is supposed to give around 220-230 Stamina per second, we only get 150-160. The reason for that again Blockade ticking every second. It can miss an opportunity to proc and delay it by just less than a second. This is the main reason why you don't get the full benefit from it. But it is still something to consider and definitely use during fights that are heavy on your stamina. Keep in mind that your 1h/s bar is still open to whatever enchant you want to use.

That's basically all I can say about this change. Play with it and make nice combinations. I hope these things I mentioned above help you out.

2- New Item Sets

Vykosa: When you taunt an enemy, you frighten them with a deafening howl, applying Major Maim for 3 seconds, lowering their damage done by 30%. This effect can occur once every 15 seconds.

We already talked about this with the devs during the meeting we had yesterday (20th) and they are looking into it. You can expect a nice change coming to it that will make it a controllable proc instead of what it is now. I won't talk about the issues this has as it's not necessary after we learned that it is getting a change. So yeah, if it becomes a controllable proc, definitely will be used by many tanks in many fights. Some examples I can think of are: Warrior Thousand Cuts, Stonebreaker Avalanche, Rakkhat Barrage, Pinnacle Factotum Centurion Heavy Attack, Llothis Defiling Blast, Olms Trial by Fire, Z'Maja Nocturnal's Favor and some more. It is definitely a good set, make sure to get one for your tank.

Haven of Ursus: When you take damage while you are under 50% Health, summon Ursus’s spirit for 6 seconds. You or an ally can activate a synergy on Ursus to grant you a shield that protects you and the activator from 13954 damage for 6 seconds. This effect can occur once every 12 seconds.

This right here cought my eye immediately for the potential it has. As you know, the current meta is Alkosh on tanks and this set compliments Alkosh in a really nice way. It is just the implementation of how it works at the moment. The AOE that provides the synergy spawns behind you, which means no DD or healer will be able to take it unless they risk getting cleaved by the boss. More important thing is, you can't take it too. Because in order to activate the synergy, you have to move back and boss will move with you, getting out of all AOEs. So we made this clear that why it can't be used in its current state. Hopefully we will see some changes on how it works.

For this moment, there isn't much else to talk about. I'll update this thread later on with the upcoming changes if they are related to tanking. I hope this thread will be helpful to all tanks and I expect to see other fellow tanks to have some contructive discussions here.

Thanks for reading,
