What’s the main reason for taking a long break or quit the game? If you do

My reasons are a combination of technical issues but more importantly the direction the game is going. If I start seeing things like crafting or jobs being gimped, scaling down content or loss of story and it takes away the fun for me a quit. I have also quit over how a company supports the game as far as fixing defects. Typically once I quit I don't go back.

It's always other games for me. Sometimes other MMOs and sometimes single player games.

Lately I decided to fire up a very old game I haven't played for 6 years, Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning, and it has taken a lot of time away from ESO.

I have a pretty high tolerance for game issues for that to ever be the deciding factor that drives me away in a fit of nerd rage.

Fell in love with the number of storylines for ESO. From being a jerk or the hero character choice was priceless.

Then felt super pumped up for the Summerset storyline but I set the bar too high for the story to wrap things up. So many amazing NPCs of all kinds felt forgotten and pushed aside for the famous NPCs. (My biggest one was to see Louna again)
Even felt inspired to write my own story to piece everything together but never did have the expectations filled out since there weren't as many choices you could make on your own. It kinda felt forced to have to go through the quest lines that you did not want to say but did it anyway.

There are dungeons I'd like to do but trying to find a group to enjoy the storyline rather then achievements is difficult to find. Hope to see more in the new DLC <3

I think for me I'm in a weird place in the game where I'm not quite hardcore and not quite casual so I get to a point where a lot of the content is too easy (Dungeons, Vet Dungeons, Normal Trials) and the only stuff left is content that is too hard or restrictive for me (Vet Trials, Maelstrom) and I don't have the patience to "perfect" my rotations and DPS skills.

I mostly PvP but I still like doing dungeons and stuff on the side, but that stuff gets old after a while and I like to take a break.

the long break I had with the game happened after I took a ton of time to gear my up mag DK for pvp, tried to min/max everything, and then I went Cyrodil and experienced such lag for the whole weekend that on Sunday I sat there and said, what was the point of all that min maxing when the game is so unstable/glitchy/laggy? it made me feel like a chump for giving a *** about gearing up.

I've come back because of BGs. but I got a little bored of them and tried cyrodil again recently and my experience of cyrodil is reminding me why I took that ~ 6 month break. I found myself yesterday being upset when I was happy before playing, and if a game does that than it's time to stop. If I had a PS4 I would probably be playing God of war or any of their several single player games Xbox doesn't have.

The few times I've taken breaks is due to a mix of things. but mostly boredom and lately, what I feel is overly aggressive sales tactics. currently, the group of people i was doing trials with kinda fell apart, aside from I can only do the same things over and over for so long. doing trials just to get gear to do trials gets to grindy. and now seeing all the advertisement at every character login is getting to me. now I'm down to 1 or 2 characters logging in per week and playing for about an hour total. just check to see what the golden has for sale and maybe do one summerset quest.

The games overland and delves are way too easy. All of the new quests that come with each expansion just more of the same easiness. I Love the look of the world and it keeps me returning a few nights a week but when I get to the end of a major questline (not even an easy delve) and the main mob which everyone is so scared of dies in 3 or 4 hits over 6 seconds, I get bored and log. I just can't see playing a game if the only challenge to be found requires some time to get a trial group together (pretty hard with limited play time after work) or remove all of my armor, cp, food/drink, keyboard, and half the skill bar just to complete some of large amounts of of Overland content available (that I'm not supposed to enjoy because I'm not a new player) with some excitement.

Edit: I love pvp too as I'm an ex Daoc and Warhammer player and could probably do that most of the week but man is it an unbalanced mess out there. Not only that there's no real realm pride, guild pride (where's the guild banner's flying over the ramparts like Daoc) and real reasons to get out there and battle it out. It's a keep take merry go round and that's it. They've all but forgotten about that aspect of the game imo.

Recently I went back to Baldur's Gate, Pillars of Eternity, and Dragon's Dogma (never played it) looking for some excitement. Truth is after 20 + years of MMOs I'd rather be playing an MMO as long as I was enjoying it.

I have taken 2 breaks. The first one was for about 2 months and that was mainly because of the pvp community. I noticed that I was becoming quite salty and grumpy, not able to enjoy the game. I had to walk away and reset myself because Im not the guy I was becoming. The second time was merely out of boredom. I would find myself just standing around trying to figure out what to do only to eventually log out.

I am back now, I have a new love for pvp because I remembered who I am and have a new more carefree or casual mindset towards the game in general and I find it to be much more of a healthy experience.

Technical issues and too grindy, but the tech issues take a bit of a lead. I mean, Zeni literally made nearly $1,000,000,000 on this game at launch. Very likely well over a bill after 5 years. There's absolutely no excuse for the game to be so buggy with that kind of profit coming in. Dungeons and entire towns disappearing (happening across all platforms) in just about any zone you're in. In Cyro the lag and rampant CC (to include NPC"s CC spamming you) are enough to make you cry like a 7 year old while pulling your hair.

They don't seem overly concerned about fixing much of it. I guess as long as crown store sales are good that's how it's going to be. So, just gonna move on soon.

    Unbalanced gameplay
For me its really the every class can be everything feature. So in Cyrodiil because of this generally everyone will go for the strongest build for your class, So basically you only see 5 builds running around that are all DPS/tank/healer other than those that really want to be something like an assassin or archer will try to play that role but be less successful. I actually miss classes being known for their roles and feared by them as well. Tanks just being tanks and Mages that are deadly from a distance but squishy if you get to them.

So as of now I am just waiting for Camelot Unchained to be finished. 30 defined classes and 3 different realms (alliances) There will also be an actual Crafter class that is responsible for all gear in the game and building all structures and siege weapons.

I would also select unbalanced gameplay. Tech issues are obvious but everyone running around on easy mode MagSorcs is annoying. (Other classes too)

20k burst rotation in PvP on tanky builds with 30k worth of stackable wards, 15k of which comes from a class exclusive Ward, insane mobility with streak, Defensive CC with Rune, unmitigatable Damage in the form of Curse, combined with the strongest Magicka Ultimate in the game (meteor). And people insist they aren’t broken being able to stack shields and be an ESO equivalent of an Abrams tank with star power.
I was the cheese for a little while and had to stop. It’s just not fair. Only class who has a fair shake is another MagSorc or MagTemplar. Everything else has to Shield stack and run Immovable pots with Mist to counter ONE class. That’s just ONE imbalance to mention.

For me, I quit playing a game (nope, don't do "breaks" - when it's done it's done) when the developers take that game in a direction with which I am either uncomfortable, or not in agreement in some other direction. I spent 8 years playing WoW - and when blizz went a direction I couldn't stomach, I quit. I stopped 7 account subs, and deleted all my toons (and their stuff and gold), then I changed the emails to crap even I couldn't comprehend so yeah - no one is getting in there (not that there's anything there now - that was all in 2014.... yeah.... no gold so no worries on hacking from chinese gold sellers...) RIFT I played from 2014 to 2016, and then ditto above.

I'll play a game (either MMO or SPMR) until something goes south. After that.... nope. I'm done. This is the first MMO I've played in two years. And so far I'm enjoying it (mostly because it's TES after all....) If the devs go some weird south-facing direction with this game, I'll quit again, delete toons/stuff/gold and go back to Skyrim.

    Break is healthy
I find breaks are healthy, as well as spending time in other games. I rediscover my love for ESO every time I come back.

I "left" this game for a month or so when Legion launched. I played the hell out of Legion, got my fill, got my break from ESO, and came back. That was my longest break since launch, and I haven't had a break since. (Though the new 40k/Civ mash-up, Gladius, is going to take a chunk of my time from ESO these days...)

But I only leave ESO for a break to play something else temporarily. I find when I do, that when I come back about a month later or so, I re-love ESO all over again. There are decisions over in ZOS that I abhor.... But at this time, ESO is still my favorite/primary game.

I have also been subbed, mostly the whole time, since launch. Even during my short breaks.

He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.

Did you know that prior to Trials, crafted gear was the best gear? Now, it's not so simple.

Its not 100% true, though. Julianos used to be BiS for a long time, then there was Twice-Born star era, then someone made a Mechanical Acuity build... Trial gear wasnt always BiS and even now there are alternatives.

Different things. Sometimes addiction, sometimes busy with RL. Usually with MMOs (including ESO) it's when it starts to feel like a job. Having some point to log on each day is good, but sometimes I wake up and think...you know, this is starting to feel like work I do every day instead of a game I play for fun.
I'm trying to find the balance this time through. I still want to progress, I still want to make gold, or do my daily horse training/writs/whatever. But I also try to just have fun. If I'm tossing up between a daily task type thing that I'm only doing because I 'should' or doing something I actually want to do, I'm choosing the latter. As low CP player this often comes down to 'what should I be doing to progress the fastest with CP/Gear/whatever' and 'what would I enjoy doing now'.
