Ravenhurst is great for the cost.
It's a little out of the way, but right next to a Wayshrine so no real issue there.

You can use the wooden planks / boards to completely fill the upper level with floor-space (it starts off as more of a mezzanine) to add in 2 extra rooms if you like.

You get a decent sized walled garden too also which is nice.
I made a raised terrace which allows you to take in the very nice surrounding views.

It's basically the Gardener House in Wayrest but without the cellar. All-round good choice imo :)

no, its the apartment that costs 11k I think? is about the size of one of the rooms in the EP large hom (its sort of moon shaped), has fairly high ceiling (so second floor is very doable) and has 50 slots furnishing limit (100 with ESO plus).

Agreed, best 11k i have spend. Free wayshrine in the heart of mournhold.
I also like hundings palatial hall. Not too expensive, large spaces and you have roof access not like twin arches. But quite far away from a wayshrine.

Sleek Creek sounds good too, will check it out once i am back from my holiday, thanks for the tip, especially the thing with the thieves den :)

The Ald Velothi Harbor House in Vvaadenfel is pretty big for its cost.

I manage to make the most of my little Snugpod by adding another floor, there is a lot of vertical space.

This was also my first house and compared to other house that cost more you get a lot of space, an awesome view from your balcony and a huge garden

The houses in ESO don't serve any essential function in the game other than decorate it and make it yours.
That being considered, the best option for you would be to choose the home that you would really love and enjoy the most for you. The first house is always the riskiest perhaps so it's understandable that you want to make a smart choice. But picking your favorite from personal taste will never be a mistake.
And after spending enough time in the game, decorating your now home along the way, you might even have saved up enough gold to purchase another from your favored selection of in-game homes.

You may also want to consider which zone is your favorite and what your favorite race is, if one of your preferred options have at least one of those in common, perhaps that's the perfect choice.
I didn't read through all of the posts here, so you may have already chosen...if not perhaps this could also help.
    Good luck!

Seems to be a lot of love here for Sleek Creek House here. Great location, close to all amenities, and a a fantastic layout. At the price, it’s an absolute steal.

Autumns Gate is by far the best value.

Hundings and the Coldharbour estate are very much worth the price if you want a step up.

I really like the Alinor Crest Townhouse, I've been busy for weeks now with mine and look forward to showing it soon as it nears completion. I think it's great value for money in a wonderful location.

I love my house, The Ample Domicile.

For one, it’s plenty ample for a domicile in its price range. Yah, truth in advertising!

Secondly, its a 5 second run from the best crafting city layout in Tamriel in Stormhold.

Stay away from 24 people (Manor) houses. They are for guilds, hardcore roleplayers, decorators and rich kids. Also they can be overwhelming to decorate if you are looking for savings. The ideal is 12 people (Large) houses. They got plenty of space but the decoration is easier because the place is smaller and you get 600 slots with ESO+ vs 700 slots for manors. The prices are good too so I'd say they are the best. Then pick one that suits your race/theme. Prices are in gold, slots are with ESO+:

    Large 600 Furniture 12 People

    Forsaken Stronghold = 1,285,000
Great house not only for orcs but guilds and players that value protection, it really looks like a mercenary den and has several rooms plus a nice watchtower and a big exterior.

    Old Mistveil Manor = 1,020,000
The nord house to go at this price, near Riften, it has that viking vibe with the thatched roof, wood and stones. Clever thinking can make use of the walls in order to expand the area with platforms, etc. The stable/barn/workshop part is really great to work too, I used to have a full crafting setup there and with platforms made a cozy bedroom upstairs taking advantage of the window view.

    Strident Springs Demesne = 1,280,000
Basically the Vile Manse, another great house to decorate. It has the feeling of those hunting lodges / country house state the nobles retire to. I don't particularly like the red sand soil (from Reaper's March) which held my purchase on this one. But I spent quite sometime roleplaying with a friend there and the place is very cozy, I'd buy if there was a green grass. Also it sadly lacks a fireplace but that can be made with a dozen slots and stones.

    Medium 400 Furniture 12 People

    Ravenhurst = 260,000
This house is one of my favourites. It doesn't boast the basement found in Gardner's but you can work good with the two floors it comes with. What really shines is the landscape around it, it does feel like living in a farm village, can even see the mill and the courtyard place is very big for its price. That alone beats Gardner's.

    Mournoth Keep = 325,000
A cheaper version of Forsaken but it still has some charm. Also fortified and in stone as the signature of orcs, this small state will suit lone orcs or small mercenary bands. The exterior area offers plenty of place to work with.

    Sleek Creek House = 335,000
One of the most underrated houses. Along with its prime location near the best city of perform business, this house has an unique charm of not having a behind door interior. It's very open (yes inside the covered parts won't rain) so you can really see through the windows which for me is a must, all the houses just feel very claustrophobic with fake windows. Again, what's holding my purchase is the red sand and the fact it's a lesser race (I'm a classy breton :P). It has a pond though and everyday I visit a friend there this house grow on me.

    Small 200 Furniture 6 People

    Autumn's-Gate = 60,000
A cozy nord home very cheap and good to decorate. One of the best features is not in the house but the fact it is very close to the lake. You can fix the walls blocking the view of the lake with platforms. A ramp leading to it and tables/chairs placed. It's great to talk to friends whilst watching the game day/night cycles. It has a fireplace and you can decorate to make it very cozy for a huntsman or a common folk couple.

    Twin Arches = 73,000
Not a fan of the desert but the layout of this house is great. It has a nice courtyard and a flat roof where you can expand to make a second floor/social bbq area.

    Cyrodilic Jungle House = 71,000
Of all the houses this is my least favourite. The interior space is way too small but the courtyard is very charming. If I remember correctly has a pond too. I also love Malabal Tor. It just sucks they picked the Imperial style for it. A hut like house would be more suited.

I posted these houses based on costs, player cap, furniture slots and because they have both an interior and an exterior house. I didn't invest in tree or mud houses so I can't comment on them.

Lol, the lesser race comment. I main Khajiit stamblade.

And it's been said in this post earlier that in Twin Arches, you aren't able to build up onto the roof :/

Ohh really? That's sucks! Why! And you are correct. I also made a mistake, I mistook Sleek Creek with the Khajiit manor, that one is with the pond and one building with exterior.
