Even though I'm a little annoyed that "Dawnbreaker is the divine artifact that we need" came out of left field at the very last quest. If that need for a divine artifact had been built up better, I wouldn't feel so blindsided.

Back in Glenumbra in Cath Bedreud, Darien is also able to pass through a toxic area without any sort of means of protection against it, while everyone else needed some enchanted amulet to be able to pass through. He mentions not knowing why he didn't get affected, and no one else has any explanation for it either, so I think that might also have been the first hint of his being Meridia's chosen.

Who WOULDN’T choose Darien Gautier?!
He’s so swashbuckling.
For sure, I feel like he was taken so quickly!! And the journal upstairs really hurt me too when he said he’d been promised freedom and he wasn’t getting it.

I think Darien did get his freedom, and what he does with that freedom is to choose to give his life to help his friend the Vestige. In dialogue at the point where Darien restores Dawnbreaker he makes it very clear that it is his decision and not Meridia's directive. That sounds like freedom to me.
As for the journal, to me that reads like something out of a soap opera. It gives the script writers the maximum amount of wiggle room with the character's on-going story. So, I think there is every chance that Darien will be making a surprise re-appearance in some future episode of ESO. Stay tuned!
The upstairs journal made me cry. I felt like I'd failed him. I realize this was *his* sacrifice and he made it willingly, but I still feel bad that I can't save him. The suggestion that he is fading into nothingness and the undercurrent of dread I perceived in that is still upsetting me. I might cry again now that I've relived it due to this thread. Thanks ever so.

It also makes me wonder who will be the cover character for whenever there's a DC-centric Chapter next time, like how Nayru was for Morrowind and Razum-dar for Summerset, Darien was always that kind of character for the DC stories.
Stibbons.

Ah, but you see, those of us who have completed the main quest are NO LONGER the 'vestige' because we have our soul back!!
