He died as he lived: gloriously.

Even though I'm a little annoyed that "Dawnbreaker is the divine artifact that we need" came out of left field at the very last quest. If that need for a divine artifact had been built up better, I wouldn't feel so blindsided.

For sure, I feel like he was taken so quickly!! And the journal upstairs really hurt me too when he said he’d been promised freedom and he wasn’t getting it.

Yeah, true. I knew it was going to be Dawnbreaker the first time Sotha Sil mentioned it, but it seemed kinda strange that the player or anyone else really for that matter doesn't really give any consideration about it, sort of just like a "well uh, we'll figure that out there when we come to that bridge" expecting that we'd just run into a divine artifact on the way there lol. Could have had a little bit of collecting a Divine Aritfact from the Psijiic Vaults cause they'd probably have one in hand, but then lose it on the way up the tower due to something happening, and the Dawnbreaker just being the last lucky resort.

But that's just me nitpicking, still loved the story tons, definitely my favorite DLC questline.

Anyway, yeah, I was really sad to see Darien go again, I was looking forward to getting to chat with him after everything was over with, finally sharing that drink he'd been mentioning since Camlorn's story back in Glenumbra, but then he had to go and die heroically, for the second time. Not many people get a heroic death, and even less get them twice.

It also makes me wonder who will be the cover character for whenever there's a DC-centric Chapter next time, like how Nayru was for Morrowind and Razum-dar for Summerset, Darien was always that kind of character for the DC stories.

    ...

Was running through Rivenspire on a new character yesterday
noticed in the story section on Northpoint that when Darien is being attackede by bloodfiends
the light of Meridia is actually what saves him

if my recollection is correct, he has always been saved in the same manner at that portion of the quest
but this was my first time having context for what exactly it is that saves him

my next stop is doing Summerset with my Coldharbour quests still unfinished,
to see if he references remembering me in Glenumbra and Rivenspire, or if he is only programmed to recognize Coldharbour progression

    @Samadhi

Back in Glenumbra in Cath Bedreud, Darien is also able to pass through a toxic area without any sort of means of protection against it, while everyone else needed some enchanted amulet to be able to pass through. He mentions not knowing why he didn't get affected, and no one else has any explanation for it either, so I think that might also have been the first hint of his being Meridia's chosen.

Good catch, that quest had slipped my mind not being run through as recently

now wondering if they had his whole future appearances planned when the initial game content was created

Turned down his offer to buy me a drink on every character to clear Camlorn
Am a lesbian tho, so Darien never really had a chance to begin with

Do like that the character was not written as a creep that repeatedly hits on me after the first shut down tho
consider him to have more than redeemed himself, and to have demonstrated his good nature through his further actions

I think Darien did get his freedom, and what he does with that freedom is to choose to give his life to help his friend the Vestige. In dialogue at the point where Darien restores Dawnbreaker he makes it very clear that it is his decision and not Meridia's directive. That sounds like freedom to me.

As for the journal, to me that reads like something out of a soap opera. It gives the script writers the maximum amount of wiggle room with the character's on-going story. So, I think there is every chance that Darien will be making a surprise re-appearance in some future episode of ESO. Stay tuned! :)

Yeah, remember that quest where you can kill Razum-dar? He comes back anyway. Best not to read too much into it x)

The upstairs journal made me cry. I felt like I'd failed him. I realize this was *his* sacrifice and he made it willingly, but I still feel bad that I can't save him. The suggestion that he is fading into nothingness and the undercurrent of dread I perceived in that is still upsetting me. I might cry again now that I've relived it due to this thread. Thanks ever so. :s

Maybe Gabrielle or Skordo, even Lady Laurent haha.

I'm still upset we can't tell Gabrielle and Naryu about what happened in summerset, maybe both will show up in Murkmire.

It's nice that the writing for NPCs has gotten better to the point that we can become emotionally invested in them.
I think that is really nice with having people from past storylines return

I keep saying... I want a quest in which we get to kick Meridia's a** for what she's done to Darien!! While she says, 'because of you he started to care'... in the end she still has the option to save AND free him... but will she... probably not without us intervening on his behalf. One would think by now the Daedric Princes would know not to mess with us... OR OUR FRIENDS!!!

It feels like we are losing out friends we made at the beginning of the game, one by one.
Are we going to be a grizzled loner by the end?

I cried too. I was already on edge of crying over Leythen, then Darien sacrificed himself also. Darien should have been given a place in Coldharbours Shining Star, to forever be a flirtatious hero.

    "Nayru was for Morrowind"
She had a hand in the preceding events for Summerset. Read the Earl of Nocturnals diary.
I did this story on a Morrowind Character who never did the Coldharbour series of events. Never got on the "Benefactors Boat". Darien's responses where different. So were Sotha Sil's.

Darien was right in that Merida is not to be trusted. She is self-serving. Doing what benefits her. If you happen to benefit from it then that is not a concern of hers. She gives you your soul back in order to help her vessel in the next stage of her plans. At the rate, things are going with realm reshaping and Daedric wars. Do not be surprised if Cadwell turns out to be...You.

Meridia despises the undead. Her main beef should be preventing Mannimarco's rise to Godhood.

    Mannimarcos future escapades

    "The Warp of the West"

The second dragon break "Where were you when the Dragon Broke"

His inspiration from being at the first Dragon Break
    The Maruhkati Selectives

If he succeeds Meridia will have bigger problems than Barbas peeing on her flower bushes.

ESOTESOOT Occurring during the interregnum makes for a very interesting story. And Summerset gives us a glimpse of a Queen who is seeking diplomatic means to end the three banners war.

Of interest is the fact that "Rigurt the Brash" from the Nord Cultural Exchange was held in a cell by Clavicus Vile's Earl and escaped.

Also of note. The Queen needs to get Razum Dar Fixed.

That's what happens when you make a deal with a Daedric Prince. He got his "freedom" at the cost of his life.

And who allegedly gave us our soul back? Meridia. Never trust a Deadric Prince. Maybe it wasn't our soul. I've always had my suspicions about that.

I missed seeing the journal upstairs in the Alinor palace when I did this on my first character. (I pretty much left the palace immediately and wasn't paying attention to the dialogue.) Then I did the quest-line on a 2nd char, and noticed the dialogue that time and went upstairs to check.
    *read journal*
    *wept*
*transfered to first character again so I could click on the journal on that char, too*
