There are 3 CP caps to reach.

160 is the first, there your drops and enemies stop levelling, meaning, your enemies can't get stronger than 160 and your gear, food, etc. can't get better than 160.

The second is the soft level cap. This is 810 atm. It startet afaik at 600 and will be raised in 30 CP steps every now and then. Points over 810 or the respective other cap can be earnt, but not used, until the cap is raised by another 30.

The last one is the hard level cap: No CPs can be earnt from this point on. I don't know if this is a myth or exists, it is said to be somewhere around 3600 points. Considering how long it would take to unlock such a level, nobody should care. B)

CP160 is where the gear caps. CP300 is considered the optimal amount required to do vanilla veteran dungeons and most content (and no, not counting vFG, vSC or vBC. Those can be completed at CP160-290 with no problem). CP600 is considered the optimal amount required to do vDLC dungeons and trials while CP810 (currently) is the cap.

Of course, the whole comment of CP300 being required for veteran vanilla dungeons and most content is entirely dependant on the player. CP160 however, is necessary for the sake of your gear.
Welcome, Moon-and-Star, to this place where destiny is made.

I play healers or DPS often for vet dungeons and trials (NA, CP810+). I play mostly elves or Argonians.
I primarily play Damage-Based stuff in PvP, but occasionally I'll play something tanky or got the heals.
I also love gaining more knowledge both metaphysical and mundane regarding TES lore.

I also occasionally role-play, but I prefer playing the game.

well you see 160 is the number of times sorc has been nerfed since eso's launch and they picked that number for the armor cap to celebrate the crippling of the class :)

So I'm guessing the 30 CP increase each patch is the gallons of Sorc Tears collected then? :D

Since there are 9 CP trees, each with 4 stars that can take 100 CP, 3600 would max out all the stars so you wouldn't be able to spend any more CP. That's why 3600 is the hard cap.
