Rate ESO (benchmark for top mmo on the market)

Hi all,

I've managed to test the best mmo rpg available on the market. I can now make a benchmark of them based on the following criterias:

1. Lore
2. quests
3. sound
4. graphics
5. performance
6. pve content
7. pvp content
8. class number and uniqueness
9. class balance
10. free to play + micro transaction

The notation goes from 1 (bad) to 5 (good)

The mmo tested are WOW, GW2, ESO, FFXIV and BDO

1. WoW: 5-3-4-1-5-5-4-5-5-1
2. GW2: 4-3-3-4-4-4-5-4-2-3
3. ESO: 5-5-5-4-2-4-3-2-2-2
4. FFXIV: 5-4-5-4-5-5-2-5-3-2
5. BDO: 2-2-2-5-1-2-3-3-2-2

The score for each mmo is the sum of all the single criterias (X2 to get them at base 100)

1. WoW : 76/100
2. GW2 : 72/100
3. ESO : 68/100
4. FFXIV: 80/100
5. BDO: 48/100

I've tried to be as much objective as possible, i'm not promoting any game here.

Unfortunately, those things really don't give the whole picture.

Like. I played WoW hardcore before switching to ESO. And, if you want to do all the quests in a zone to get all of the story, you're going to start to find that it will put you at a higher level than the rewards, making it, less rewarding. This makes a lot of people just skip huge chunks of content.

Also, I would argue ESO gives you much more class/uniqueness than WoW, given all the different weapon and guild skills you can use to make you character drastically different. (DK can be a fire mage, a tank, a poison melee or archer, a healer, a hybrid)

Honestly, I could go dissect pretty much every bit of this besides the fricken performance, which is pretty much a science based thing, rather than opinion. I will admit ESO pvp is lacking though, which I don't mind, I hate pvp, but others like it, so it could probably use some TLC.

My opinion on ESO, also WoW(for comparison):

How does ESO score a 2 on microtransactions? Crown store is cosmetics and convenience items only (not including expansions). I'd score it 5-4-5-4-3-5-4-5-2-4

ESO's class system is so dynamic that your class can be completely immaterial to the skills you end up using and that's pretty incredible. You can do whatever you want with whatever skills you want. There's only other MMO I can even think of that allows for something like that.

Of course on the flipside of that it means that balance is a bit tricky, to say the least. Just how many times a day on this forum do you hear the word "BIS" thrown around after all? So many skils in this game but the ones you see always end up being the same ones. Definitely an issue there.

There’s a lot to like about ESO but it’s going down each quarter from launch. I couldn’t rate it above any of your top 5

First ESO has 5 classes vs double that in other mmo
Second you got magicka and stamina build they are 80% the same skills and same optimal stuff
Third the classes are not balanced NB still got the best dps, DK and sorc survivability
One last thing skills are so many in ESO thus we use only 10 of them

Okay, except that ESO's classes are way more flexable than WoWs. You can pretty much play however you want with any class. You seem more concerned with BiS and Meta than actually playing the game for... fun?

You're confusing meta with viability.

You can run skills and builds outside of the meta bible and do nearly as well. The margin of difference in most cases is like 1-2%.

Class balance is an issue, however it is being worked on. I still wouldn't rate any other MMO higher.

Or the thousands of other activities, I never PvPed in that game, but spent thousands of hours, questing, crafting, trading, there is plenty to do, and there was clipping, but not enough to drop it to a 1 in performance

While I agree FFXIV is better than ESO, I disagree with some of the criteria, because, I hate PVP, so, for me, I would give ESO a 1, and I love PvE, but ESO's PvE honestly kind of sucks overall (my opinion). So, for other players ESO might get 5-5, but for me, it gets 2-1 (PvE, PvP)

WoW, a 5 in lore? That frequently retconned mess? It's not even sure where it's going an it frequently fails its characters. "I'm ready for peace with the horde. No, war! NO PEACE! NO WAR! NO PEA--WAR, I MEAN WARCE! PEAR! GAHHH!"

Elder Scrolls has managed to keep things fairly consistent for the longest time. And more, has even successfully conveyed the idea of 'history from many perspectives' without screwing it up. I'd give ESO (considering what it's built upon) an 8 in lore, and WoW a 2 by comparison.

So, yes... Opinions.

ESO microtransactions are mainly cosmetic but they are WAY over-priced and currently pushed pretty hard on players reminding that 'hey it is there, for 2500 crowns (+20 dollars) you can buy this outfitttt...'

Or when they make it that you CAN buy houses in game with gold but then they introduce a new house that is limited time only but cannot buy with gold, only crowns and it is like what... +100 dollars worth of crowns.

As mentioned, mainly cosmetic but I know some people do buy mount training from crown store, classic p2w cut off. You wait a long time to do action in a game but if you pay a little bit with ingame currency you can skip it all together. Then there is the storage things, instead of paying around 900k gold to get max bank space, you can pay real money to get it, then other additions like banker or merchant which I would love to have but 5000 crowns is too much to spend on one little thing in game. Crown crates are mainly cosmetic too but man do they feel bad to open majority of the time for so many people with the duplicate chances and such a high price for them...

However, I do have to say that I am pleased to see that ZOS has became somewhat friendlier with the crates by giving them out for free more frequently, daily rewards and common crown crate events.

GW2 is no where in this or any other universe better than ESO..

Some mmorpgs are better in some aspects than ESO for example The Secret World murders ESO in story and questing..

Guildwars 1 beats every mmorpg ever created to date in everything but graphics..

ESO is most definitely one of the top three MMORPG's right now. WoW, FF14, and ESO are the cream of the crop in my opinion. Which of those three you like the best just depends on personal preference. For me, it is ESO easily simply because Elder Scrolls universe trumps both of them.

I like WoW better tbh, since you can actually earn things when playing the game rather than spending irl $ nearly 95% of the time now

Dudes i'm not trying to bring down ESO, I love this game since Oblivion.

but things are this way i was really upset when i calculated the final score. but till now what makes ESO not that great are:

• Performance: the game is beautifull yes, but the more content the less is the performance. i've noticed that devs bring down some texture in summerset to lure us about an improvement in performance. this will for sure make the game less nice looking;
• PvP: cyrodiil + imperial city + battlegrounds. It's good but most impacted by performance
• classes: there is less classes compared with other mmo. also the fact that you can wear what you want and use what you want doesn't impact you can use full magicka stuff dps to tank or to heal.
• balance: pretty bad also in pvp and pve. just look at how many have finished maelstrom arena by class.

I've already said it, i'm not trying to bring down this game. some things must be said for ZOS responsable to be aware of. because crown store won't save this forever.

One day, a new(old) mmo will put an end to all available ones. i personally want it to be ESO. but only if ZOS make the right changes

TSW had amazing stories and lore best any mmorpg ever did imo.. the only issue was everything else was pretty bad...

Yeah, the engine they use sucks, and has always sucked.

But what can they do about it now?
It would require an entire overhaul to resolve these types of issues, and they simply dont have the money, or are unwilling to invest it at this point.

that's what i mean by performance in my first post. The game performance really sucks even with high end pc !!!

but remember when FFXIV was first launched, it was a complete mess. but Square Enix decided to invest on it and gave us that marvelous FFXIV a realm reborn.

Are ZOS responsables and devs this bad to not see the potentiel ?
Why are they cutting the branch on which they are sitting ?
