***What Race for My Thief?***

What race should I go with? Why that race? Why not the others? Feel free add whatever insight you would like below. You can be as specific as you want, armor types(light,medium, heavy), class, race, weapon style, anything pertaining to maximizing a thief for gold earning. Keep it spoiler free please. I am fairly new to the game, haven't really played it yet. I heard thieving was quickest way to earn gold so here I am. Thank you for your help time and consideration.

I don't know if I would say thieving is the quickest way to earn gold, but it's pretty easy and a guaranteed 20k per day at level 20 thieving/legdgermeain.
Khajiit and bosmer both have passives that decrease detection radius which help while thieving. In that case I would do either khajiit or bosmer -- or honestly any race you want because thieving is easy enough without the detection passives anyway.

My two main thieving toons are a Khajiit vampire and a Bosmer (who's not a vamp, but a werewolf, which doesn't help with thieving). Both are probably the best races for thieving, especially if it involves pick-pocketing, but I have to say I find my Bosmer to a tad better for it, even without the vampire sneak passive, especially when she's decked out in Night Mother's Embrace + Night Terror.

If you want to be the best possible THIEF character then Khajiit is the obvious choice followed second by Bosmer. If on the other hand you want to be the strongest possible cloak and dagger character in combat you're probably better off with a Redguard. It depends what you're going for. Khajiit has the stealthy passive and pickpocket bonus. No race can pickpocket better which I can attest has been highly effective in gathering things like motifs for me in the past.

Khajiit may have a pickpocket bonus and start out more quickly, but in the long run you'll do probably better with Bosmer in my opinion. I like detection radius more, because with other classes (without detection radius bonus) it takes longer to find the right hiding spot to pick NPC. So in the end you get to pick more in a shorter time, because you are more able to stay hidden an not get caught. Very convenient.

people pickpocket alot plus theres sets that make your detection radius litterally invisible even to guards so khajit is litterally the best thief setup

You can make 40k per character per day stealling. Takes a while but for small amounts like 10 to 20 k its not too bad of a grind.

Kajihtt and a few medium armor sets. Night terror and night mother and lvl up dark brother hood theives guild and legerdmain. And your good to go.


Btw khajiit has same sneak passive a bosmer so go with khajiit for the 5% bonuss to pick pocket. And nightblade be a nightblade.

Vampire, khajit, nightblade for sure

Nightblade- No matter what your bounty is you just cloak and disappear. Walk by guards with ease. There is also the concealed weapon skill. It's the wrong morph for stam fighting, but it's a nice boost to sneak speed.

Khajiit has a pickpocket bonus. It's a big deal for being a thief imo

You need medium armor. Night silence is what you want until you're a vamp. It's craftable. Night mothers embrace is what you should mix it with.

A little later grab bone pirates gear from blackheart haeven. Tons of stamina and the witch mothers brew activates the bonus. So sneak all you want and the mag food will allow you to cloak for a long way.


Edit: I said darkstride instead of night mothers. Darkstride is my farming gear.

Yes, I use various specialized sets aswell, but pickpocketing is not the only thing. Don't forget boxes , you don't see/know as well if there will be an NPC walking by when you are working on locks.

I think bosmer take less fall damage as well, does that come in handy? It really depends on your preference, OP. A lot of characters can fulfill that thief role you seek but, in my opinion, the best candidates are either Wood Elf or Khajiit. Wood Elves just seem like they will steal from you when you have your back to them. Khajiits have been known to have sticky fingers in the lore.

Armor type you want to go with is, without any doubt, medium armor. There are sneak bonuses within that skill line. If you are unsure about a class, go with Nightblade.

Because of the pickocket bonus on khajiit. There is no replacement for it. Detection radius has gear and honestly isn't an issue for the combos discussed here. Im sure there's wealthy bosmer thieves, but BiS here is Khajiit imo.

since mostly your money comes from what you pickpocket now(motifs and other things) its better to run a khajiit and just get the sets to get your detection radius down. a friend of mine had his radius down so much he landed on a guards head and pickpocketed him with perfect success. so its easier to roll what you need since the sets are there.

It depends on what you want do do more.

If you want to gather randomly by picking pockets only, Kjajiit is definitely the best choice.

If you want to do anything more than that, like quests at the thieves guild, then Bosmer are probably the best choice, because there you mostly have the challenge of not being detected.

The only reason I say Khajiit over bosmer is I have yet to see anywhere in the game you can get a bonus to pick pocket outside of the standard thieving line to level up that everyone has. No sets, no potions, etc.

But you can get sets that will reduce your detection range and they actually aren't expensive to get a hold of and really not even bad sets for running standard content. (Night Mother's embrace - be careful, there are a couple diff night mother names sets, so make sure it's embrace) reduces you detect radius by 2 meters and the cost of sneak by 25%. Night's Silence is craftable, it takes away movement speed penalty for being in sneak mode if you want to move quickly without being a vampire. - both can be used together. There are also a couple other sets that reduce detect radius as well you can stack with Night Mother's embrace if you really want to shrink your detection. Plus you can get some Thieves guild passives that reduce detection as well.)

I also find pick pocketing to be the most risk on failure. If you mess up picking a lock, you can just wait to try again and you only get caught if you start picking and someone walks up on you. But if you fail at pick pocket the NPC will immediately aggro and you'll get bounty and have to run or fight (which means more bounty if you kill them). You also can pick an NPCs pocket up to three times and the success rate drops a bit each time, so this offsets that a little.

I'd also recommend being a Nightblade (maybe you said you were already going to). Any class can pull off Thieving, but the TG and DB quests are ten times easier when you can cloak and it also just makes general thieving easier in some instances. They even have a morph of one ability (Concealed weapon) that gives you a 25% bonus to movement while sneaking or invisible. (Granted, this is a magicka morph of that skill, so on a stam character this skill isn't great for combat, but if you just want to slot it for that, then it's ok).
