So bosmer have a greater reduction of their detection radius? But Khajiit have the extra successful pickpocket chance though a lesser detection reduction. I see so both have their strengths it seems. I think bosmer take less fall damage as well, does that come in handy? Also to those who said other races, why those races? @TheShadowScout @xaraan @Kelces @Colecovision @TheTwistedRune @Olen_Mikko @SirMewser @DuskMarine @Tabbycat @firedrgn @lardvader @dodgehopper_ESO

Yes, that's the case. But I didn't really had any situations where this really helped. Not even In PvP - you mostly have someone attacking you first and if it's a DoT, then you are as good as dead. The difference in height you can fall down isn't that much.
You reveal yourself best in how you play.

Khajiit has same detection reduction of 3m at rank 3 as wood elf.

I'll reiterate my points in a different way ranking my opinion the top 4 races for a Thief (in order from greatest to least).

    1. Khajiit: They have both stealthy and pickpocket bonuses as well as decent stamina regeneration. In combat they have strong crit.
    2. Bosmer: They have stealthy bonus and strong stamina regeneration, to a lesser degree the fall resistance is good for escapes.
    3. Redguard: Strong stamina makes for great combat skills. Doesn't really effect thieving apart from a good pool, but in terms of combat a Stamblade Redguard is extremely strong. Their attributes promote the class in good ways as well but they are not inherently as good a thief as Khajiit and Bosmer.
    4. Argonian: Potion passive is nice. Swim speed is good for escapes.

My point is very clear. If you want to focus on being a superior thief nothing beats a Khajiit for minmaxed thieving. I suggested other races in case there were other motives or interests. You can do quite well with any race for thieving to be honest, but for being the best possible thief it is clear Khajiit is #1.

@DarthMoon_N_Star , I just noticed that you also asked about class and gear. @Xaraan gave you some good advice. Here are some points worth considering that will mirror some of what he said:

    1. Medium Armor is your best pick for stealth. Look at the passives.
    2. Be a Nightblade. Cloak is too good to pass up.
    3. Join Thieves guild and Dark brotherhood.
    4. Level up your Legerdemain skill. Early levels are really easy to build up quickly. If you are lazy about it you can rob docks for apples and corn and whatnot from barrels. This doesn't require picking pockets and you can easily fill your bags with loot to Fence and Launder. You want to Fence as well as Launder to your limit. It is possible to maximize legerdemain in one day but it is quite the grind. You can very easily build up this skill by just chipping a little bit at it every day.
    5. Skills that enhance your ability to escape are very useful. My Bosmer Nightblade is an excellent thief I play from time to time. One of his sets is the Morihaus set. When I get caught I dodge roll through the npc guard and knock him on his butt and swoop out. Guards are actually extremely easy to deal with.
    6. Don't be afraid to get a bounty. Learn how to play while having a bounty. You're a thief. Don't be afraid of it. You will get spotted. Heat will go down. This may mean that you want to do your thieving toward the end of a gameplay session if you don't have your passives leveled up, so that the heat can go down while you are offline/asleep.
    7. Vampirism offers a stealth speed passive that is extremely tempting. There are other sets available that offer you a stealth speed passive that is analogous. There are even armor sets that can duplicate the stealthy passive that Khajiit and Bosmer have. You do not need to be a vampire as long as you get one of these sets, but the stealth speed really makes life easier so you'll want either the set or vampirism.
    8. Cloaked dagger is nice for stealth speed as well but it is a magic morph. Be aware this is a nice skill to have and unfortunately it means for combat you won't have access to the stamina morph. It still offers something like 25% speed boost while cloaked.
    9. Jewelry crafting now offers a SWIFT passive. I'm planning to work on this trait now for any of my Scroll Running characters in pvp as well as harvesting, and thieving. On golden jewelry the Swift passive on 1 Neck + 2 rings will give you a +30% speed boost in all positions. Pretty strong stuff.
    10. Potions can offer you things like Invisibility and Speed boosts. A Major expedition buff can be gained in other ways but its still nice to make a potion that gives you Invisibility + Expedition for those times when you might have had to cloak one too many times.
    11. One other thing you ought to consider is learning one town. I'm suggesting that you pick a town and start learning how to rob that town. Look for places you can escape. Look for routes you can run that will have good rewards that you can rush through to get what you want. You will find that you can get to know a particular town really well and you become unstoppable in that town. Those lessons can then move on to new towns where you can learn new routes. It will get easier. The secret is looking where the rewards are: treasure boxes, npc's, visibility etc. In terms of leveling the skill line you get points for laundering, fencing, when you pickpocket successfully, and when you pick a lock or successfully. Always look for good ways to enter and escape a location. Once you master this thieving becomes pretty easy and you can get quite brazen about your criminal activities, no matter what race you choose to play. :)

Nice, I forgot about Khajiit getting the stealth bonus too (going from memory instead of having game open). That should make the choice easy IMO.

    Yep, a bit disappointing though.
I'm wondering, was there ever a change to the passives of Khajiit? I deleted mine some time ago and never used it in medium armor...

To OP, reason why I have a Dunmer magBlade as thief is because you can use any race for this if you lvl up all the skills for it. Dunmer magBlade can also be used for doing all endgame content as well and is not just limited to stealing.

Nothing wrong with making builds for doing just one thing but any race as NB can do this job well and I just love Dunmers in ESO.

Wood Elf Vampire with night stalker, 5 medium... can move at full speed while hidden, and unless someone is standing on your feet, they won't see you? Plus, enough stamina regen, that you can cross an entire zone while hidden, and never need to stop to regen stamina? Yeah, Bosmer is the only real answer up there unless you are going for a specific role playing or flavor build concept.
