My character doesn't have a "build", is that okay?

    No.

It's not. There's a right and a wrong way to play this game (and many games). Make a build and learn how to play or else there's no point.

You know what. I'm going to go ahead an agree with this to an extent.

If you're just soloing content, then sure, play however you want. No big deal. And if that's all you're ever going to do, then yeah that's fine.

However, I think that changes once you start queuing for dungeons though, especially as a tank or healer. You can probably get away with not having a specific type of build as DPS in normals. I do think that once you start group content though and other peoples enjoyment is involved, then builds are a necessity.

Sorry for the necro guys, but I just thought of another, related, question.

So a lot of you guys are saying it's fine that I don't have a build until end game, but how will I have a build for the end game content if I don't start working on it now? Or, do you do most of the stuff to make a build after level 50? I've been putting an equal amount of points into magic, health, and stamina, but I'm now beginning to put more into stamina. I'm just worried when I get to the end game my character will be to muddied up too do vet trials and stuff.

If you find that your character is becoming too loose and ineffective because you didn't build him/her correctly, you can always respec at a rededication shrine, or for CP just pay 3,000 gold and all your points will be reset. Don't worry too much. If you mess up, it's not like you're stuck forever.

I still don’t have a build, and I’m just about CP200. You can reassign your attribute and skill points whenever you like.

Go ahead and do what you want, because you can always change it later. Personally, I’m getting all my skill lines to 50 in each weapon, and every skill morph to rank IV. It makes for some pretty ineffective setups even for overland content, but it doesn’t affect anyone else, so that doesn’t matter much.

It's fairly easy and inexpensive to change your build, so its quite all right if you don't have one, especially early on or if your build is not one that's customarily accepted as a build.

I would just caution you on a few things:

    1) Don't avoid conventional builds just to avoid them, or just because they're conventional. They're conventional for a reason - because they're effective. If you don't enjoy them, that's fine. If, on the other hand, you are not satisifed with your gameplay but are refusing to use a more conventional build just because it's conventional you are only hurting your own enjoyment. This may, of course, never happen but if it does, embrace it.

    2) Along the same lines, you can have many characters. Every one of them does not have to be a well-tailored trial character or a PVP monster. Consider, if you want to do high end things, having a few characters (1 to 3) for high-end PVE/PVP and do what you want with the other however many slots you have

    3) Playing dress-up with the crafting station is wonderful and can make your character feel off the beaten path even with a conventional build. If you want more effectiveness but don't want to be "cookie cutter" just dress differently.

    4) Remember that other players are not obligated to include you if you're ineffective and don't want to change. Be respectful of other people's time. Also remember that PVP is PVP. Enemy players are supposed to kill you. They are not going to give you a handicap and shouldn't.

    5) There are effective builds out there that are decidedly unconventional. Look for some good videos; you might find something you really like.

Please take none of this as criticism. I see way too many people that let their fun get affected because they can't or won't find ways to "play their way" while being effective at the same time. In particular, one character simply can't do everything. Do what YOU want to do, but if you want to do lots of different things, find ways to be effective at all of them. It's do-able without sacrificing your fun!

Been here since beta, and have leveled many alts. I can guarantee, even when you’ve max leveled your character, and found a “build” you like, you will have to change it. Frustrating, but it’s the nature of the game. ZOS makes class and skill changes all the time. Sometimes they are minor and only require minor changes to your build. Sometimes, your build gets nerfed to Oblivion and you completely respec.

Because of changes, I’ve switched a few characters from magika to stam, and back again. Even thought you’ve max leveled character, there is still room for it to “mature” by unlocking all the different skills and morphs. In the future, that makes it easier to completely respec your character and instantly be ready for whatever ZOS throws at you!
