I can quickly think of 9 different ways to identically spell "Hogun":

Hogun (Latin script)
Hοgun (with ο, omicron instead of o)
Ηogun (with Η, eta instead of H)
Ηοgun (with ο, omicron instead of o and Η, esta isntead of H)
Hоgun (Cyrillic о)
Нogun (Cyrillic Н)
Ноgun (Cyrillic Но)
Ηоgun (Cyrillic о + eta)
Нοgun (Cyrillic Н + omicron)

Try it, they use different characters, but they look the same in most fonts.

Same thing happened to me. Just after the launch of the "blood and wine" dlc for the witcher 3 I created a character named 'Detlaff van der Eretein'. A couple of months later I deleted him so I could change his appearance and start leveling the character. After I was done with character creation the dreaded "name already in use" alert popped up.

I think you will find that between you creating that name at launch and now, the character name became "reserved". No-one else took it, it got locked by the system. The system no longer allows you to have characters matching NPC names. Hogun, as you should know is a primary character from the stonefalls story quest.

"Interesting" isn't the adjective I would have used. Here are many more to replace it for accuracy:
"Foolish", "Ridiculous", "Insane", or "Unnecessary".

It's Holgunn, not Hogun.

I can't find myself feeling for a person who purposely deleted a character over a listing position while clearly frustrated the name was taken using a forum subject header with "argh".

I'm not known for having tact. It gets in the way of being honest.

Honesty does not necessarily mean blorting out every thought especially if it could be hurtful and really isn't necessary.

Some folk have medical issues that result in what appears to be odd behaviour to others.

I always thought that once a name was used it can't be reused, ever. If this is true, then you took the name. I would suggest us8ng the name but also giving him a last name or other such moniker. For example I used Hraesvelgar (also a popular name) but paired it with Bloodmoon (he's ww). Also I have Hrungnir (didn't bother to check how popular it is so not sure) paired this one with "the Undead" ( he's quite often in Draugr polymorph form). Just a suggestion...

I feel for you. This is my greatest fear when I delete my 14 alts to rearrange them properly. All of them have unique lore-friendly names and my heart make a little stop when I push "create" button.

ZOS, make character order change option already! Lack of it ruins people's lives!

I have 14 characters all max level, 13 with max horse and bag space..

As annoying as not being able to change their order on the character select screen is, there is no way on God's green earth, hades, Tamriel or anywhere else that I would go through releveling them just for that.
