So...

I had been sitting on my Nord character since the game launched. I created him years ago, but hadn't played him. The reason was specifically so I would have access to his name: Hogun.

Today, since I can't arrange the characters on my selection screen as I like, I am forced to delete and recreate all the characters between him and the other members of his faction, so that he's in the correct location in the list. This includes recreating HIM.

So, I deleted him, and recreated him... and in that time... after FOUR YEARS... someone happened to take his name. After waiting four years, someone HAPPENED to take his name in the 5 minutes or so it took to recreate him.

I'm so ticked off and baffled by how bloody unlikely this is... I have not words.

I think its intereting how you value the order your characters are listed over the characters themselves.

Give your Nord a title or clan name, it will give him more personality. Most of my characters happen to be Nords and they all use the same clan name I created.

You sure someone took it? Maybe the system still has your deleted char name as occupied?

I ain't sure how it work though.

I was playing on the EU server for Xbox and noticed that Petty Thievery was somehow a Warden. I could not let that stand.

This meant that I also had to delete Drunken Brawls and A-Good-Bandit-Raid. I was able to get all three names back immediately.

Its highly unlikely that the system would make the name available again that soon. It probably takes it out of the available name pool for 30 days or more after deletion. Also you delete a character so he appears in a certain spot in your list? Thats a touch( a lot) OCD.

Actually, you can re-use a name immediately, assuming no one takes it in that time between deleting one character and making another. I've done it, and was able to re-use names immediately.

Am somewhat unclear,
due to deleting him and the others
was he deleted and remade today
or was he deleted, then you took several days before remaking him waiting for the delete timer

is your plan to now remake the rest of your characters to appear after him again?

it does strike as very unfortunate odds tho
at the very least, hopefully it was taken by someone who plans to actively play under that name for some time

You could possibly whisper the char name Hogun ingame explaining the situation. Send them a mail perhaps?

I had a charname in TOR I had been saving for 2 years before I decided to create the char as I wanted it.Took maybe 10 mins. Then I discovered that someone in those 10 mins had created a char with that exact name. I was lucky. I sent the person a tell, explaining the situation and they were generous enough to delete their char and I got the name back.

So while it is a slim chance, there is still a chance you could get the name back. People can still be civil and kind and selfless. I hope for your sake this is the case as well. If it isn't, I am sorry, but frustrating as it may be, you will have to move on and find another charname.

I tho k the names are locked for a period, pretty sure of it.

Other option is hold the button down and use a special chaactor on one letter. Sorted.

Try again, I did that once at launch because in game appearance wasn't what i hoped and it did take a bit for the name to be free after i had deleted the character. I hope it works out for you

maybe it takes time for character to count as deleted. If it wasn't a common name then... maybe something els is up?

To be clear... that I lost the name isn't as much a big deal as it's how the whole thing went down. I've deleted characters and recreated them before, and the name was available immediately. It's that after 4 years, someone took that name, and it just happened to be in that 5 minute window when I was recreating him. I mean, what are the odds?

I just renamed him. The character did have a last name as originally conceived, so I just added it.

The point of the thread was really just to vent about the degree of bad luck involved.

Ya, deleting all the characters to arrange them the way I want is a bit OCD. That's why I've repeatedly asked them to allow us to rearrange the list how we like. No dice yet.
