Honestly, I used to think the same about how ESO was p much never toxic (esp since my experiences in toxicity are primarily from super toxic FPS game environments) and was confused about what my friends were on about wrt zone chat being toxic, but I've been realizing that a lot of it is just luck. Zone chat isn't always toxic, but it definitely happens sometimes that it gets pretty bad.

I also personally miss it a lot just because I pay more attention to guild chat.

Yeah that may very well be happening to me as well. I tend to not have text chat open unless Im specifically looking for something. I have asked a few questions with no issues but I try to make sure I dont ask something a simple google search on my phone would answer either.

Im also a vet and former law enforcement and a bit of an a-hole so really it takes a lot to get under my skin

Trolls like getting a reaction out of people. The more you react, the more trolls your will attract. Based on this thread, I'd assume you react quite a bit.

You really just need a thicker skin. Ignore losers who treat you badly. Or push back, firmly but nicely. But there is nothing we can do here other than give you sympathy for the well-known fact that some people behave poorly on line.

I get the "you're too old to be gaming" occasionally and I always ask the person saying that: At what age do you plan to stop gaming?

Usually shuts them right up.

Oh, and I'm 65 and no intentions of stopping any time soon.

Are you aware that some PvE and PvP guilds have an age limit?

There is one focused vE guild I am aware of with a limit of 28 or 29. I am not in any of those guilds, but with the 5 guild slots, you get exposed to a wide variety of interesting discussions.

I sometimes wonder what they will say/do if they find out that a significant number of their A team players are between 40 and 60.

I'm sorry youre getting trolled @kronoso1979b14_ESO truly I am... But you're on a head set, no they don't know where you live. No they don't know how old you are or anything about you.

This is why I don't use console. Its filled with kids and adult kids talking crap 24/7. Its more toxic than PC... which is amazing in an of itself.

Best bet. Get a PC, join a guild, join their channel on w/e voice service program they use and you wont have to worry about children ever again.

They might not know your actual age. They may be using an age as an insult that is by coincidence your age as well.

If you're on the PS4 NA server you're welcome to join my guild, we have people of all age ranges and personalities, and we don't have trolls in our guild chat. Shoot me a message at greenmachine513 when you can and I'll send an invite.

There are definitely toxic jerks on the server, but there are tons more friendly people who just want to have fun and enjoy helping and encouraging other players. Either way, do not feed the trolls, ignoring them takes away their power.

BTW I'm 39.

There are no guilds worth being in with an official age limit. That’s seriously uptight behavior. The good ones isolate us with youth oriented topics and have us leave voluntarily.

Zone chat in any mmo is the worst. I suggest joining a guild and ask away. Start off with, im new to the game, and ask away.

Guilds generally dont put up with trolling as they want to grow.

@OP - I'm pretty sure that default chat (I'm on PC, using pchat, so I'm not 100% sure) allows you to filter chat between guild, zone, party, whisper.... Find yourself a couple of guilds - social/casual/trading - and limit chat to guild chat. It should make for a much more enjoyable experience.

Then, why do you allow letters on a screen, that can in no way touch you personally, to bother you? Do you respect those trolls so much that you value their opinions? Pity them, be amused by them, and discard their trolling as worthless junk waste of chatbox space.

Unfortunately on console (XB, at least) there are no filters. Chat is either on or off. So, if I want to view guild chat, I have to see zone chat, as well. Which is why I usually leave it off. Every once in a while, I'll turn it on, to see what's going on in guild chat or when I'm looking for a new trading guild.

Also, it's funny that kids make fun of people over 40 playing video games. They don't realize we've been playing video games most of our lives. For some reason, they think video games are a relatively new invention.

on PC EU i find the community really nice. obviously there are always some annoying random kids around, but it's not at all significant and we can always ignore them and get another group.

anyway, when i play with my guild mates it's always good and nobody is ever trolled.

i have no idea how the things are on PS4, but try to find a good guild and play with them.
