How many characters do you actively use / are able properly look after?

I am someone who has all 15 character slots filled with characters I have created.

I do kind of wonder sometimes why I bothered as I find it very difficult to meaningfully look after that many characters.

My journey pretty much went along the lines of:

* Create my main an complete main / alliance quests.
* Create non combat alts for different casting - Crafter - Provisioner - Enchanter - Alchemist
* Getting to have one of each class in each alliance and at least one of each race.
* My main character ends up mastering all types of crafting so that the alts for crafting loose their value, try to refocus them on different character build / combat styles instead.
* Keep grinding my non champion alts little by little each XP boost event.
* Still probably have more non champion Alts than champion ones often not getting used outside events.
* Resign myself to the fact I just can't expect to look after so many alts.

I mean it is good that if you get any alt to Champion Rank it will share the same champion progress with your main.
On the flip side, to be really useful as a character it will need a fair number of skill points.
Gaining skill points still requires questing and sky-shard hunting.
Questing and Skyshard hunting doesn't get really faster on secondary characters given the game will keep scaling to the level of your character.
Secondary things like trait research, horse training, is time consuming. Expanding bag space gets expensive.

I probably only really properly use about 3 of my 15 characters.
My main as DPS / Crafter / Achievement Hunter.
A tanks (who was my main crafter and knows the most motifs).
A Healer, purpose built to be optimised as such.

That has been my experience. I would be curious to know how other people.
How many characters do you have?
How many of them do you actually use?
How do you use them?
Are you able to keep them all formidable at combat for PVE / PVP?

It has taken literally years to get my main to complete as much content as he has. Multiplying that x15 is practically impossible even if I didn't have a job and just played the game constantly.

I would be interested in your perspective.

10 maxed out toons. Stam/Mag of each.

    Mag Templar is healer.

    Mag DK is tank.

Wardens are PvP and play as I want toons.

The rest are suited for dungeons/ solo. I have gear and setups that many would drool over...and a few questionable setups, even to myself.

Main is StamBlade. I much prefer Stam toons.

I have 15, 14 of which are maxed out. The one thing I do not do is keep more than 1 character below lvl 50 at a time. I find it easier to do my weekly things with my main and intermittently level my character that is under 50. I have a healer, mag dps, stam dps, and tank for PVE, so I use those characters as needed for trials and such. But the majority of my characters are PVP. Keeping up with them really comes down to my mood. I mostly take each through Cyrodil once to get to tier 3 for rewards. And then I PVP with whatever fighting style I am in the mood for and that toon gets the majority of my attention for the rest of a campaign or until I want to PVP with another.

I also do not quest on every character to level. I run every dolmen outside of Cyrodil, collecting skyshards and doing public dungeons along the way. The only questing I may do is going through the main story to get Soul Assault or running the fighters/mages guild for experience in those skill lines. The main story also helps level fighters guild.

I have 15 as well, but I'm fully aware some will only be played on very specific situations.

My system is a little different. I have my main Breton Templar Healer that does all achievements, crafting and competitive raiding. The rest is mostly to have all spec combinations of DPS.

With those new changes, I'm also making one Argonian DK, one NB, one Templar and one Warden that I plan to use as a switchable healer / tank for each class.

In the end I plan on having my main, then 1 mag and 1 stam DPS for each class, 1 argonian switchable healer / tank for each class too (except Sorc... I don't think I'll ever be able to love or want to heal or tank on a Sorc).

The thing is that it is impossible to care for that many if you don't play all day. Just like "the meta" has the FOTM, I switch all the time my focus... When I'm bored with healing, I can get in a StamBlade mood for a few days or weeks. Then I get bored and really get into tanking for a while. Then to MagDPS. Eventually for alternative healing... And so on.

Usually I feel like playing one and I realize it needs gear, skill points and such and then I'll just play a little on that character every day for 1 or 2 weeks to slowly get it where I want. You'd be impressed how much progress you can make after a while when you just commit to improve one alt for 20-30 minutes each day you log in.

As an example, my MagDK was created years ago just to be a mule. Over almost 6 months, I'd just play for 10-15 minutes do get some skyshards, level a little bit. When I discovered a cool MagDK build I wanted to test, she was almost fully leveled in the basics.

I have 5 chars, a stamDK, stamSorc, StamBlade, MagBlade and a Magsorc. The StamBlade and MagBlade are pretty much chars i just leveled to see if i like the playstyle but ditched them at the end, so they are storage characters now.

The only two i seriously play are my main stamDK and my stamSorc, i just love stamina based chars in this game, never felt comfortable with a magicka char so my magSorc is only there for crafting dailies and pick up the mail from the hirelings.

Properly 6. Main <was> imperial NB tank, but started with DK tank. Over the years, levelled up templar, sorc, warden, and a second NB tank. (argonian - wanted to see if race change was worth doing on my main. It wasn't)

The 5 in my signature. That means they're fully Undaunted and have as many skill points and guilds levelled as they need, e.g. Fighter's guild on all, Mage's guild on the magicka characters. 3 are max level crafters and do writs. One has learnt every trait in every crafting skill line. All do Alchemy and Enchanting, since it's just more convenient. All PvP and have gold weapons, purple gear, and my own builds that I'm usually working on. I have two mules in addition to those 5.

I only play 5, meaning I've quested, done vMA, dungeons and trials, a bit of PvP, leveled crafting skills, do research. Another 5 are only for crafting writs because I didn't have time to get skill points. The last 4 are just storage, and are likely to become writ crafters once I level them. And I'm no "casual" playing a minimum of 4h every day. I don't know how people are able to play multiple accounts full of characters because some days I'm exhausted trying to keep up with what's basically 1/3 of a full account.

My PVP Stamblade, they are my main so I actually do a lot of the story and questing with them. Being my thief and assassin. They are also my crafter because researching takes a lot of time.

    and

My PVE Mag Dragonknight DPS. If I need to dungeons and trails this is who I use, clears the story the fastest so I quest quite a bit with them. Also a crafter because I didn't do all the crafting on my first character.

and that is pretty much all I have time for to maintain.

I have a PVE Tank I only play them when I want to do Pleadges (for a short queue).

I have a Sorc Healer. Only when someone wants a healer. I am still leveling and collecting skill points and things, The problem was I started a new character and just don't find the time to use this character.

And my Stamden.... supposed to be healer... but they have actually ended up being a PVP Healer DPS. I have been spending a reasonable amount of time on them recently. But they are still under 50 and I need to log in to feed their horse. I have found them much more exciting than I expected.

So The answer is 3. I can keep three maintained.

I'm very comfortable with my 3 mains though I have 5 total.

    Mains: Healplar, Petsorc, Bow/bow stamsorc.

Healplar crafts consumables and all furnishings. Petsorc crafts all armor/weapons. No other characters worry about crafting except as support (find mats, process/grind up stuff, perks to better use food/potions).

My fourth char is a classic DK Imp tank - mostly to become familiar with what goes into tanking. Very capable character but not enough passion for them to call a 'main'.

Fifth char is bow/bow stamden but very very young and not sure will continue; reluctant to develop more chars or even her since I don't want any of them to feel 'casual'.

So. . . for me I'm guessing that 3-5 may be my limit. Been playing almost 2 years.

8 with 4 active, first magsorc who is achivement hunter and crafter, templar who is healer and I do most dungeons with.
stamblade is the last active, has an mag warden who I don't use so much any longer, feel that the templar and sorcerer are better healers. An stamDK who need an rotation :), second magsorc, magplar and a magblade who need skillpoints and better gear. The second magsorc was planned so I could switch first to stamsorc for more mobility

I have 14 toons. Magic and Stam of each, and a dedicated tank and healer. I also have a spare mag sorc and a lowbie DK that I never got around to doing anything with. I use them all for bag space. I use 8-10 consistently for writs, and each patch I typically min/max 5-6 for the current meta.

Those 5-6 are typically 1 magic DPS, 1 Stamina DPS, 1 Tank, 1 Healer, and 1-2 for PVP. I obviously always have a crafter as well. 12 of my 14 toons are in full gold gear, but two of them arent at 50 yet..

I have eight fully levelled characters, and I play with all of them! I do writs, questing, and most achievement hunting with my main character, my magsorc. I like to do pledges on a couple of characters, usually my warden/templar healers, my DK tank, or my magsorc/magblade DDs. I did the TG and DB DLCs with my magblade, and I also do my thieving shenanigans on this character as well. I PvP mostly with my templar healer, and I farm materials and motifs from delves with my stamblade/stamsorc DDs for faster movement. Finally, I run trials with all of them, I play fashion scrolls online have made outfits for all eight, and eventually I want to buy and decorate houses for each one (so far I have only finished two). It might sound tiring, and it wasn’t easy gearing eight characters, but I love doing different things with each one, and I genuinely miss them if I haven't played with one for a while

Im playing several DK tanks each with their own gear. Two NB DD, both mag and stam. And a templar healer.

3 of the characters dont have functional build or gear. But most are geared enough to complete non dlc veteran dungeons.

I have 8 characters, and 6 of those are maxed.

Of those 6, I'd say 5 of them are decently geared.

But of those 5 characters that are geared up, I'd say I only ever spend a decent amount of time on two of them, one being my crafter, and the other my main.
