Because any class can still do well if you’re good at it. And there’s something to be said for mastering a class especially in PvP where it just feels super natural to play and you know how to responds in all situations. It might not be the best for that patch or even for many patches, but that familiarity is worth more and it’s quite satisfying to show people that even the fotm doesn’t outweigh knowing how to play. It’s also funny when someone whispers me that stam sorcs need a nerf in PvP lol.

This is something that has intrigued me for a while. ZOS balancing of the game seems to be cyclical where one particular class gets uberbuffed and performs significantly better than other classes. I typically figure out which class performs best for a patch based on my PTS testing and main that class for the period of that patch for both PVE and PVP.

For example in PVE I used to main a magplar from Thieves guild to Homestead. mSorcs became uber strong in Homestead and I switched to those. In Morrowind it became clear that mNB would be the best performing magika class after PTS testing and have enjoyed playing the class since then.

However I see players who continue to play classes that are underpowered and clearly not the best for that patch and then complain a lot on the forums. I don't really understand why people stick to these classes. Wouldn't the game be more fun if you have a variety of options to choose from and choose the best of those?

This is not an insult but You are every game developers dream customer, just pull out the carrot on the stick and you will carry them anywhere.

Story quests are fun once... just once..
finding shards is fun once... just once..
finding books to unlock mage skill line is fun once.. just once
running dungeons is fun a hand full of times ... not as a full time job day after day after day to level up a skill line...

Actually it is the other way around. I'm probably one of ZOS's less profitable customers. I have not spent a single euro more than the base cost and discounted crown sales for DLCs. I spend the bare minimum necessary on the game to enjoy all the content that I want to play. I don't really have any attachment to the game or my classes. If they nerf what I'm playing i move to the next. At the end of the day it is just a game and there are so many options out there.
I play how I want to.

Probably because people have lives and really like their only toon or they are not going to grind another toon from scratch because thats annoying and complaining in the forums is the only way they can relief the nerfing.

Anyway i see this post is made by a minmaxer mlg player and i really couldnt care less about some elitists.

Unless your doing vet time trials for leaderboard, does it really even matter?

There are many reasons for playing a class that is considered underpowered by the current meta: you only have one main character, you enjoy playing that particular class spec the most, you are most experienced with it, or because of RP reasons. Whatever the case, I think that if a person knows their class well, they will be successful in running any content with it, especially if they are part of an organized and understanding group. There might be some exceptions, like the AS trial where mostly ranged specs are preferred, so it’s good to be flexible sometimes and have an alternative set-up, but for the most part if someone loves their class, that’s the only reason they need to play it, even if it’s not the ‘best’ class of the moment. A final note: even if a class is underpowered, it doesn’t mean they can’t be valuable in a group, if the player is great at playing that class; for example, Alcast is very experienced with his magplar, and he played it in vAS HM, even though it's been relatively underperforming as DD class for a long time, and the meta called for magblade, because it’s obviously a class he knows very well, and because he could bring utility to the group with skills and class passives, etc.

Because not everyone is the same. It is not the class for me per se. I stay with the one class because I like to play one particular style. Changing the class would mean changing the style. And people get salty because it is not like its sort of now this has pulled ahead slightly and now that is a nose in front, it is that what was once playable becomes literally unplayable. It is the tilting in the extreme from one in-balance to the other. For folk who can blithely mothball their Warden as not currently viable and take the Sorc out of the closet and never think twice about it, sure no big deal. If you really don't want to play the 1-2-3 button your dead from across the room style ... it's ... a pain.

Scourge Necro WAS the rage in raids.. but with the quadrobillion of nerfs they got now they are junk again like always...and free food for most classes in PvP again x.x

il just hope Necro will come here one day and we get other caster weapons also instead of getting stuck with Walking stick staff my entire time in this game...

Can't imagine that they able to implement a Necro without just copy and paste the half of the skills of sorc and NB. :D

It takes a lot of time to have several classes.

Also, we may choose a class/race based on preference and not what's FOTM.

So, i liked the first part of your argument, but i;m completely against the conclusion, why keep playing the class? Well then, why can't zos do slight adjustment to underperforming classes and bring them up to pat with the stronger ones? How about that?

Instead everytime the do balance, they buff or nerf by crazy amounts, remember the saying, take all things into moderation? I think zos has forgotten that.

I agree with OP, who was obviously getting more at the end-game player.

Obviously you can beat 95% of content with a character that is far from optimised, but why try, for example, beat VAS + 2 with a magDK in the current patch? You're just doing a disservice to the other 11 players by taking away from their score & time. Of course the flip side to this is someone staying alive on their MagDK, because they know it inside and out, vs floor dps on the magblade who's been playing it two weeks and can only pull high numbers on a stationary dummy that doesn't spit out mechanics.

I enjoy the theme of a class. I know full well that magicka warden is the worst magicka class in the game (no other class even comes close to being this bad, it's actually comical). But I still love the druid archetype, so it gets to be my "main".

I hold out hope that ZOS may one day actually balance their game.
