Healing is 7k magicka. I doubt any tank can afford it.

For tank build definite yes. 40K health tank , its huge heal. 15K heal in one shot. You get full health in no time. Tanks usually have around 15K - 20K magicka. This skill costs around 4K magicka not 7K magicka and definitely affordable. A definite must for sorcerer tank builds. Clanfear also tank veteran and even trial bosses with ease. It wont die easily.
DPS big no if using for heal. You have better options. But some pro dps running it for tanking for soloing veteran dungeons.
RIP for people marked as no.

Just now I got informed from sorc friend that cost is increased from 4K to 7k lately. I dont play sorcs for long time. You are right 7k is huge for tank build . You only use 1 time max. Shields would be better option for survival.

I’d say it’s useful insofar as it has uses, but its not a great skill imo and definitely not optimal in most situations.

My DK tank runs with 20k magicka and 2k magicka recovery, and spams spells all day long.

In fact, most good tanks do not put anything extra into stamina, because you dont need to; stamina is used solely for taunting and blocking, and you get all of your utility, sustain, and survivability through magicka instead.

Only reason you may want to spec into stamina is if you need to use Orbs/Shards for resource sustain. But you are right that it is typically more efficient to use a class-based sustain mechanism and heavy attacks.

I use the Clannfear heal on my PvE Pet Sorc, in fact, it is my only heal slotted.

Combined with Hardened Ward and the Clannfear's tanking, this makes for a great solo vet dungeon play ...

I find Clannfear very useful - on a pretty specific build I enjoy. This magsorc runs matriarch + clannfear and is specialized as a solo WB killer. When running solo, the clannfear (toughened by empowered ward and healed by matriarch) is an iron tank, allowing the sorc and matriarch to dps and heal in elegant safety. Normally the sorc never has to move and neither she nor the matriarch take a bit of damage when taking down a single WB.

Otoh, I tried using a clannfear to tank for my bow/bow stamsorc - no go as she hasn't the magicka to keep him alive via heals nor the mojo to shield him.

do you find that a stronger combination than the familiar/matriarch setup?

just curious, i've jumped back and forth between the two, then settled on just the matriarch for my pet sorc.

This begs the question at high levels is clanfear useful? I mean now nightblade will have a one bar skill with minor protection and same heal along with one taking one bar.

Wouldn't it actually be more useful as time goes on? When you have more Magicka and Health, and some passives that decrease magicka cost, its cost becomes less painful, while the healing gets better.

For me it goes like this:
Volatile Familiar is for DDs - it does good AoE damage and provides some area control, but not enough to be useful to a tank.

Twilight Matriarch is for Healers - its heal scales based on Magicka, making it not too good for a tank, but it's a powerful heal for DDs and even moreso for healers. It is one of only two burst heals available to me as a Sorc Healer, the other being Combat Prayer, which requires aiming at the person I want to heal, while the Matriarch heals whoever has the least health.

Unstable Clannfear is for tanks. It doesn't deal too much damage and its heals apply only to the user, making it useless for healers. However, it heals 35% of your health regardless of your Magicka, so the more health you have, the better it is compared to the Matriarch, and tanks have a lot of health.

Twilight Tormentor is... weird. Not exactly good for anything. It seems to be a DPS oriented version of the Twilight, but its ability works only if the enemy has more than 50% HP. It's better to use Daedric Prey, which not only works for 100% of the enemy's health, but affects other summons, as well.

My focus on this build is running solo with my own full team (sorc as dps, matriarch as healer, clannfear as tank). I'm sure my dps is lower using clannfear vs VF but the set up is wonderfully safe and elegant vs a single big WB when I'm solo. I do consider the clannfear not very helpful when other players show up or if I'm running with a group. He loses aggro when other players are around and other players also get any matriarch heals intended for the clannfear. When grouped with others, I simply slot out clannfear for bound armor. Couple things about this build is that I want (and have) high magicka pool which boosts empowered ward and matriarch heal. Other nice thing is I don't care about mag regen since the clannfear lets me safely work enough heavy attacks in to sustain nicely.

Twlight torrementor is fixed next patch as it will have base ability to heal. ( Remember it heals caster first). So though effect is wierd the pet will do more damage. It's quite significant if done right. I expect after the change it will have to brought into line.

Clanfear was interesting pet in combat before they were contolled by heavy attacks. You could send to attack some afar while you took care of something. He also used to hold aggro but he doesn't anymore. Sure I get why but as pet seems odd compared other pets in game. You have range attacker and healer twlight and torrementor. Scamp is nice aoe melee attacker. But though clanfear heals I never seen it with Sorc tank that I can recall.

To me I see the reason as it's chunkyness in actual combat compared to solo experience.
Besides that doesn't damage scale a bit wierd? Well though with all changes really get see if sorc tanks use or forgo this skip. For bow though is poll to see how clanfear is working now? Maybe there's something yet be seen or heard about. I hope we learn something.

No, in my opinion. Whenever I see a Sorcerer in pvp who has the clannfear, I know he is bad and easy prey.
The heal is very expensive and not usefull for magicka or stamina builds.

It's heal could be good for health tanks, but again, very expensive and not sustainable. The Clannfear has decent autoattacks and has the ability to taunt some monsters. I think, the Clannfear is formidable for new players, as it supports the player well. But as for anything that goes beyond early game ? No

Actually, for solo WBs I just use Volatile Familiar and a 6-second Hardened Ward rotation. A great many WBs won't be able to break through that and just get worn down. Whereas the ones who can (e.g. a couple of the Vvardenfell ones that spawn many-many adds) will probably not be deterred by the Clanfear either.

I have not tried soloing vet dungeons, so perhaps that is something to experiment with. In normal dungeon solo, however, again the imp and 100% shield uptime does the trick quite nicely.

Tanks, of course, are a very different story as it's their best heal by far.

To me clannfear is a vital part to provide self healing in high pressure situations. It is not very powerfull on people below 30k HP, but with the right setup especially on 40k HP and upwards, the healing it can id is great. Something like 18k heal is easily achievable. While it is expensive, many tank builds usually have quite a lot of magicka regen, as well as acess to spell symmetry.
Also, it is pretty much the only high self heal option a sorc tank has. Both crit surge and vigor dont work very well to actually keep the tank alive (in high dmg situations that is).

I hope the changes next patch to sorc pets will make the Clannfear a damage pet instead of a heal. Maybe just a morph where the pet just has more health and no pulse bonus.

Only if you play Sorcerer tank, since it is a burst heal of at least 35% of your HP and you get an additional 8% HP from Expert Summoner passive. Otherwise it becomes obsolete as soon as you unlock Surge and morph it to ever Power or Critical Surge. As for using it as "tank" I find it quite unnecessary even when fighting world bosses since I can take care of those even without any pet slotted. If I were to play with pets, the scamp also grabs aggro and does much more damage. If you really need to heal that and yourself, you are better off also slotting Matriarch, since it also does moderate damage by itself.

As a solo player, I use the clannfear on my main. I've got the empowered ward for the main shield, but if for some reason my health goes below 50%, that heal is invaluable. More so than Power surge. You can say what you want about my usage of my special pet, but I'm never changing him to that scamp. If I do join my guildies in a dungeon run, I'll change my bars to the matriarch. I'm never changing to the scamp. Period.

I'm afraid I can't really compare clannfear tanking to VF tanking - I've never used the VF. Sounds very silly I know but the blue monkey (scamp) is just too ugly for me to enjoy - lol. On the more serious side, the clannfear packs higher health - and I do appreciate the flexibility his 20.5 k or so gives me in terms of keeping him healed.

fwiw, the familiar does a decent amount of damage and can hold aggro.

i've also had the the matriarch pull aggro, too, which was really bizarre and most likely a glitch. :)

Is the Clannfear still a more reliable tank than the Unstable Familiar? I'm guessing your answer is yes. I'm asking because people's opinions seem to vary, and I haven't played with a Clannfear myself in quite a while.

I'm afraid I can't really compare clannfear tanking to VF tanking - I've never used the VF. Sounds very silly I know but the blue monkey (scamp) is just too ugly for me to enjoy - lol. Unstable Clannfear is not exactly "End game" material. (good for beginners though) I prefer the Volatile Familiar for DPS, plus the heals from unstable clannfear is Expensive & restricted to just you and the clannfear, whereas the Twilight Matriarch on the other hand, Has a cheaper Heal which can heal you & itself along with 2 other nearby allies.

      Twilight Matriarch>Unstable Clannfear
If you see me anywhere. Know that I am sitting back with a bag of popcorn, watching as ESO burns the goodwill of its player base with practices that only disrespects the players time like it did to me and many others...

If a game does not respect your time, best thing to do is move on from it and find something else.

If running pet Sorc, matriarch and familiar are the better options. More DPS and cheaper group heal. Along with ward shield, you shouldn't have an issue dying.

Clearfear MAY be useful for some solo play options, but not end game group play.
