It has technically already occurred, as you can trade Linden Dollar in Second Life for PayPal balance at a fairly stable exchange rate of roughly 250:$1.
It's speculated that Second Life users are collectively earning almost as much annually than Linden Lab is making off the product. So, in their terms it's more like a reinvested profit than accumulated wealth.

There are quite a few people making a decent living off creating content in Second Life and selling it. But I think it's different, because they have to actually DO something. Like meshing, drawing textures, motioncapture and such.
I would hate to see ESO turn into just another chore.
