ESO LAG and Perofmance issues in 2018

Hi,

I just wanted to make this post to acknowledge the lag problem that still exist in ESO. It is 2018 and ESO is about to mark 4 years anniversary.

My PC specs: Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080ti, intel i7 7700k, 16GB of ram, Windows 10 pro 64 bit. 200MB Internet download Speed, 30MB upload.

I still face serious performance issues specially in Cyrodiil. You might think that I should hit at least 60 FPS considering my Graphics card right?, no you're mistaken, i get around 30 frames and the server lag is even worse. For me 60 is bad imagine the 30 FPS or below? My skills don't even work sometimes.

Instead of releasing the dragon DLC they're going to talk about on the next ESO live stream. I think they should consider a game health and performance rework DLC, wouldn't you agree?

I decided to post this because I don't see anybody caring enough about this issue, I feel like players got used to the bad performance already. We all love this game so so constructive criticism is welcome.

I play on xbox.. I am a solo pvp player.. I can 100% GUARENTEE anyone that the majority of 1vx fights i lose are due to lag. Mainly skills not working when i hit them (or bar swap).. Sometimes ill miss like 4 vigors in a row.. Its awful. In the main campaign (vivec) things have been terrible for a while now.. I mean almost unplayable.. People glitching around, 1-2 second cast times on skills with no cast times..

I have been BEGGING zos through many different posts to AT LEAST acknowledge the lag problem.. They will not. I said the xbox one X was my line in the sand for hopes of it getting better.. It didnt fix it, maybe helped some people a tiny bit.. But if awesome PCs still lag then it will NEVER be fixed on xbox.. I have a video im gonna post on here later of a 1vx fight where i was lagging so bad it was a miracle i won.. if the players were decent i would have lost. This is the norm and im so sick of it. Mechanics aside, i just want to be able to play. Its only gotten much worse since morrowind. The CwC "fixes" might have actually made it worse. So sick of it.

And 99/100 people i talk to feel the same way.. Sometimes ill talk to someone that says they are fine.. These are either verrrryyy casual player or people with INSANE internet speeds. Like 500+ download 50+upload!! i spoke to someone one day who said he had that speed and did fine on lag.. although my buddy says he has 200 down 20 up and still lags like me.. I have 120 down 10 up.. That should be more than enough.. Back around thieves guild, maybe DB (or earlier), I played with like 20 download speed.. My internet was messed up back then, but i didnt lag ANYWHERE near this.. barely ever..

None of my other games lag, everyone i talk to agrees, streamers on xbox have issues varying, and all my other games on PC and xbox work 100% fine.. This is obv an eso issue, And always will be im afraid.

Edit* And its not just at big fights.. Near big fights its unplayable, but for example i had a 1v1 at 4am in a dead campaign last night with like 4 people around and it was still lagging for all of us..

People have demanded system reworks or server upgrades since the game released 4 years ago. People demanded to roll back the servers to the state before the "lighting patch" that could have been partly responsible for lag increase - that didn't happen as well. People have either quit or got used to the lag in ESO's pvp. No money is to be made with Cyrodiil content/upgrades. So most likely we won't see any updates/upgrades in the future because ESO's ftp model ultimately killed of any hope for serious pvp investments - It's story DLCs which grant ZOS the big money.

This is the sad truth.. They dont care about pvp, and probably never will.. even if one day we see another pvp update they still wont fix the lag.. The either cannot do it, or they just dont care enough to put people to work on fixing it.. Its sad but true. And i only believe this because of them completely ignoring the issue. Once in a blue moon they will say they are implementing something to help performance (which usually doesnt work) but they need to address the issue upfront because of how bad it is.

And it sucks because while i feel like ESO is lacking compared to other MMOs (with better trading systems or mount taming or ocean combat or underwater zones etc) I love every part of it. I have fun in every part of it. I do pve, craft, collect furnishing plans, and i pvp.. The thing is, one part of the game is completely and utterly broken and pretty much only good (at least on xbox) if you want to zerg.. Otherwise you need to come to terms with fighting lag more than anything else..

    i'm playing on an intel i7 7700k, 16GB of ram, Windows 10 pro 64 bit but with a GTX1060.

sometimes the game runs really good, mostly late at night, because of that i've been avoiding playing during the day, specially in big cities or places where people do duels. i think that nvidia has some kind of problem dealing with some light effects - i noticed that when the game is running well and some guys are fighting a duel with lots of effects, the frame rate drops to unbearable levels, but at the same time when i check the performance on task manager the CPU, Memory and GPU never even reaches 40% - so... i think that my PC specs should be enough to run this game, there's a lot of free Mem, CPU and GPU, and because of that i believe that some effects might be incompatible with my graphic card.

on dungeons and some trials i can play perfectly at stable 60FPS, except on falkreath hold and sanctum ophidia, i've been avoiding both too.

i wonder if anyone already found out what effects are causing those frame rate drops. it would be great if we could disable it.

Is the server quality and lag and issue? Very much so (worst server performance of any mmo ive played)

Does it need addressing? Yes, should of been addressed 4 years ago

Will they put any time and money into fixing these issue? No, why because from a marketing side of things they are still making heaps of money of every crown sale, every crate change, every eso+ renewal. If they lost income from these they woulwouldk at it, bit until then...... Its a no

Game on PS4 NA is unplayable for a notable portion of the community in pve and pvp as well. Lag needs to be looked at, and it started after the load screen "fix" for consoles.

Yes the lag is, at times, making the game near unplayable.
Yes the lag affects every format in both NA & EU
Yes ZOS should be concentrating on fixing this instead of creating "new" Crown crate content every month

    But...

Who says that they aren't trying to fix this? No studio in their right mind admits they have a major flaw with the game as this would cripple sales instantly and then not provide any funding to keep the studio working on the bugs/lag and developing other game content.

It may be that it is now impossible to eradicate the lag in it's entirety due to the way the hardware infrastructure has grown over time and/or the code has been written over time. I obviously can't comment for certain as I have no insight to either of these things, but in my experience as a IT Technical Architect for over 25 years I do know for a fact that sometimes the only option would be rip it up and start again - and again this is not a business model any company would rush to just because there is some "noise" on a forum where people are still playing the game and the numbers of players, (whether hardcore or casual), is still within ZOS's sweet spot financially.

It is also unfair to purely blame game developers for this. It could be that they have a major networking issue, or the data centres where there hardware is located may simply not be up to the task and this problem manifests itself the more players we get and more content, (that we all crave), arrives.

My personal view is that, like most other people, we would sacrifice any new DLC, costumes, junk, etc for a year if it meant the lag can be fixed, but then the revenue may not be there to do this. In Feb last year Bethesda signed a partnership agreement with AMD to "advance gaming technology". I hope it would be naive to think that they are also not leveraging that partnership to look at the performance issues of their current portfolio, of which ESO is one.

The other thing to bear in bind here is Zenimax had a 16% drop in profits for FY16 and, whilst the profit number is still significant, this does impact the Board of Directors thinking when being asked to spend, potentially a million dollars or more, on something that won't return profit to the organisation.

Now it sounds like I am defending ZOS here and I am not. I want the lag fixed "right now" just like everyone else. I'm just trying to add a slice of perspective.

I await the trolls and flaming I am sure to receive.

I don’t think we’re ever going to see a legitimate investment in server or node improvements from ZOS, at least not when it comes to this iteration of ESO. If/when there is an ESO2 that might come into consideration. The same exact issues have been going on for years and we have literally seen very, very few improvements when it comes to fps and server lag.

Has it become the norm now that in order to avoid lag and performance issue then one should avoid populated areas or play when the servers are a ghost town?

    Why should that be acceptable?

If I wanted to be the only person in the game then I would have played the Witcher. The gameplay and graphics outperform most games out there.

The fact of the matter is that you are playing an online game and that means that you are there to associate with other like-minded gamers and doing content together, without any lag or performance issues.

It is sad that a company can fork out $2-5 Million dollars on a super bowl add but cannot resolve the performance issues of the actual game play.

The cowardly Wood Elves are best noted for their unwillingness to engage in a face-to-face attack; a Bosmer will strike at you from every side except the front. You won't cross swords with a Bosmer, but you might catch an arrow in the throat. Be wary in forests and jungles, and watch your back.

I just wrote a props to ESO in another thread but on this point, I agree. Even with my modest time here I have seen poor performance with not all that many around. Much of it seems server side lag.

This is definitely the area I think they should work on since I find many other elements are very well made and fleshed out.

In fact, this will be my main criteria on staying or leaving. I left another PvP game to try ESO and have been very happy I did so. BUT! I came thinking I'd goto CU or Crowfall, etc. Now I may not but lag in even modest PvP fights would definitely have me moving on, which is a shame. It is fairly difficult to work this stuff out but after 4 years it should be better.

I won't go into specifics but I know from experience that they can make this work better.

My lag issue is weird. it actually freezes my whole game temporarily. I thought it was ATT addon so i removed it, still does it.

    Im in 3 guilds.
    1. my own guild. no issues
    2. trade guild with almost 500 members. Never an issue on any of the guild tabs except when ATT was running and i checked the sales tab. So i removed ATT.
    3. second trade guild. If i goto guilds and select this guild, instant total freeze every single time. Then it comes good after a few seconds. If i go out of it and back in, freeze again. This is just the guild home page in the game.

    Only guild #3 freezes me.

the only addons i have running are price tracker and AUI.

Same thing on Xbox One X. I've been playing games on this beautiful machine in 4k 60fps that looked mind blowing. ESO runs 4k ultra as well, but it can't even get a stable 30 fps. Constant hiccups when running around empty towns (like wtf is it even loading???). Cyrodil is a joke. It was running better 2 years ago before all the patches on the original Xbox (hundreds of peeps on screen, stable 30 fps more or less). I think the engine has tons of memory leaks but Zenimax spends 90% of the manpower on creating new things they can sell.

I'm right there with you, I just recently go back into the game and my ping is yet to be under 100. A few months back when I played my ping usually sat between 30-70 unless in PvP or a heavily populated city. I've read that this has been an issue for many since Clockwork City launched.
I love the game but it would be nice if ZOS talked about trying to work on this issue or confirm its something they cannot do much to fix. I doubt they'd admit the second one but I don't know enough about game development to know if say the mega server design is flawed in the way that the more content you stack onto the base game the higher latency you get! It certainly seems that way!
I know ESO is more CPU intensive like most MMOs but still no excuse for such poor performance at times :(
