Companions in bethseda games are little more than glorified pack horses.

This is one of the most compelling reasons to have pets in ESO, I wouldn't mind someone to lug around some of my stuff, give me some extra bank space. Perhaps they could start with around 20 slots and then be upgraded so they could carry more!

Sounds good to have options, but very doubtful this will happen.

The game is already pretty easy. Balancing will be a nightmare.

Towns are already cluttered enough as well with vanity pets, noisy mounts and yolo duelers.

add mediocre tank/healer/dps companion bot that can take up one player slot in PUG, that might be useful.

The queue would be a lot faster for DDs. That might be nice.

They could link them to each specific dungeon rather than make them somebody's follower? Probably never happen, but I can dream.

Then you have the EXACT same issue you have in SWTOR where ppl boot support players in favor of companions simply because they have control of them.

    Nthnx

I don't see the need for this in an MMO.

Maybe. It works well in SWTOR, but Bethesda's track record with followers is lackluster. It would need to be worth the inevitable problems it would cause.

    Jesus H Roosevelt Christ NO!

This game is already face roll easy and far too solo oriented. No. NO . -NO- HELLLL NOOO!

What is your problem with solo players lol? My favorite kind of ignorant people.

I dont have a problem with solo players, but this is first and foremost an mmo. And the solo crowd tend to be , generally, very self absorbed. They think if ANY content is made for grouping, or pvp, then they are being neglected and deserve to have a way around the grouping / pvp aspect.

The same goes with this companion system. If it were 100 % cosmetic, itd be fine, but make them combat companions, and the game would become-
    1. Even more of a bot haven
    2. Even EASIER ( if that is possible )
    3. It would discourage ANY grouping for world bosses and dungeons

In short, combat companions would require the game to be increased in difficulty, and we all know the general solo population does not want that.

IMO all playerbases are important to an mmo, but bringing in combat companions would be a massive shift in favor of solo / story centric players.

but that is something that can be adressed
    various options
    - companions could just be cosmetics
    - when using a companion your own strength could be lower so that overall you keep the same power lvl
    - all difficulty or health of enemies could be slightly raised to account for it
    - etc....there are many reasons to do this

and your other comment - grouping for world bosses or public dungeons only happens "if other people are there anyway" by accident, naturally, i have never seen anyone really building a party for that...

I do all the time, achievement runs, depending on my mood.

I mean... that is literally exactly how mounts work in this game. Your wish is already granted

I wouldn't use a companion. So long as they're optional I wouldn't mind if they were added, but I HATE how SWTOR is designed around them being necessary, and there's no system to make solo play properly viable. You have to take a massive hit to your DPS/survivability if you play that game without a companion, and I don't see how ESO would avoid the same problem. Either your companion is non-combat, which kinda defeats a big interest in having them. Or because they're combat-enabled, your DPS/survivability massively increases which makes the game trivial if you use them. Or to prevent the game becoming trivial with a combat companion all enemies have their health and damage increased, which now breaks the game for solo players. You could add buffs/debuffs to the player to scale damage when a companion is active or not, but that's a lot of work balancing those buffs/debuffs to keep combat encounters suitably challenging, which would also depend on the companion's class and role. That's the kind of work that even SWTOR decided not to bother with even though companions were core to the game design, so I can't see ZOS wanting to tackle it for an optional feature addition.

I'd love a companion system. Hell, they could just attach some kind of stat/attack/heal/whataver system to the myriad of non combat pets in the game if they didn't want to do the work of coming up with stoylines and whatnot. However, as much as I'd like 'something' I do think they would just screw it up to be honest. They haven't figured out a balance in a several year old game yet as is - adding another variable to try and manage would probably just end up in disaster.

So yes, I'd like one - but I have zero faith they wouldn't ef it up.

had it in Skyrim, was fun there.

and some quests you have a companion, who hides and attacks like you do.

on the other hand a 24 sorc grp with 48 pets, 24 vanity pets gets doubled while running with companion sorc................

    can that be fun????????????????

I don't feel ESO needs or would even benefit from followers in the open world that much.
However, having followers like in Skyrim to be used in housing to fill those places with a little life would be a great benefit.
