Laptop rebooted while playing, now addon data is completely wiped

So I'm working on pinpointing a problem with my laptop (I think it's heat-related) where any time I play something graphically intensive, my laptop unilaterally reboots. (My laptop has the specs to run ESO at ultra settings which is why I think it's heat-related).

Anyways, when I logged in today, not only did it play the opening movies and such again (I had disabled them), it made me agree to ESO's TOS and privacy agreements and such, and even made me pick my country again. All my characters/addons were still there. When I logged in, my gold, items, bank, etc. were all just as they used to be, but my addon settings (including all my precious MM and harvestmap data) were completely wiped! What the heck?

I'm not sure why a computer crash would have affected the data in my addon files; when I look at my harvestmap files it says the last time they were modified was the 17th, and I know I've logged in after the 17th with my harvestmap data intact, so I'm not sure what the devil is going on. Can anyone out there give me a heads up?

Are your screenshots and your documents still there? because where the game is stored and where the addons are stored are at different locations.

Could of corrupted your HD or SSD when it crashed in the middle of it writing something.

Screenshots are still there; all addon folders in documents > Elder Scrolls Online > live are still there. Just the data from the addons is gone.

For example, like I said, when I logged in to the character select, all my guys were there, and when I checked my bank/inventory, all my stuff was there.

But when I checked Furniture Catalogue to filter just the plans my character doesn't know, I couldn't filter by character, because it didn't list any of my characters.

When I checked my map, all my harvest data was gone; no pins, no nothing.

When I checked the kiosks, the entire deal column just said "0.00%". All my MM data was gone, and I'm in 5 trading guilds.

it doesnt. because addon data is only read when you login and written when you LOGOUT. a crash = no logout. so nothing from that session saved.

Are you sure the game didn't create a copy of the "Elder scrolls online" folder, and hence made the game somehow give priority to that folder (without all the addon data). I had a 'similar' issue to you, and got it sorted with the advice from the thread I created back then. I will link my thread. Maybe it might help you: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/352407/weird-stuff-going-on-with-game-client-now-im-just-pissed-as-hell-updtate#latest

Read that thread; my problem is there's no "live_archive" folder; just "live" and "pts". So no folder to copy addon info from. :/

always backup your addons folder, over-heating can be related to an issue, when your fans which are cooling your notebook are full of dust and the cooling paste is depleted, I would let you notebook check by some IT guy in this regard. also a cooler stand is a good thing to use (something like this: https://i.imgur.com/GOTB7Co.jpg "cooling pad", "cooling stand").

then also, check if you have enought free hard disk space to run eso, do disk defragmentation, check if your hard drive is not broken somehow. run repair launcher. check if either your windows firewall or antivirus firewall is not blocking any of the ESO executable files.
    good luck!

Data settings are under the SavedVariable folder, which is under Elderscrolls Online/Live in your Documents. You need to log in and log out fully in order for a setting to be saved. If your computer rebooted itself in the middle of the game, it's possible it corrupted those files.

If the addons only save the data on clean game exit. On crash all the changes made during the game are not saved. It may even corrupt old data but I've not noticed that on my computer.

It seems to me your addon-data was being written when it crashed. Ergo, all the data stored (in this case the addon-data) in your memory got wiped. I would just check your laptop before doing anything else really. Check your hdd, and your memory before you start over. Might be something broken.

I am also having this issue. In the past week and a half or so I have lost addon settings 4 times. I have had to re-confirm gamma settings, agree to EULA etc multiple times. At times now I also have an unprecedented lag between my button presses and ingame action. Since CwC was introduced I have more often than not had my pc crash when the game fails to close down - ending in the dreaded bluescreen. That is usually how my gaming session ends these days sadly (no random crashes - just when the game not being able to shut down).

I love playing this game, but it is disheartening to try out other games and see how smoothly they run with fast login and response times. I spend so much time in ESO on loading screens and login/logout screen, re-tweaking settings that randomly reset, circumventing bugs etc that I am not sure how much more of this I can muster to put up with.

Don't know what version of windows you are using but for Win 10 File History by default should back up anything in your Documents folder, which is where ESO puts your addon info.

Of course you would have needed to have a second drive (internal or external) and switched it on for that to happen.

Aaand there we go. It reset again. Wonderful. This time though - as with 2 days ago (that suddenly corrected itself) - it fails to recognize any addons are even installed (which is incorrect). Does anyone have a clue as to how I can fix this?

    Info:

    * Firewall/antivirus is off
    * I play ESO through Steam
    * I have reconnected Minion with the game and the addon folder, and it interacts with it correctly
    * I have repaired the game
    * I have tried logging in bypassing the launcher
    * Addons and Addon folder have not been removed or moved locations (path: C:\Users\xxx\Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live\AddOns ) and all addons show in that folder for me and they were showing earlier today

I am really dumbfounded at what is happening here. I have ran Game Consultant, but don't know how to read that. I might have to try a full re-install.

Check the addon section in game. Sometimes the “use outdated addons” gets unchecked and will result in addons being disabled

    There are 0 addons there.

But I am sorry - I might be derailing OP's topic here. I will make my own topic or file a ticket when I have the will to try to tackle this.

When you exit the game all saved variable data gets dumped to files. During runtime all the saved data from the session is actually stored on your ram. The pc shutting down prevented that data from being written to the disk or probably straight out corrupted it, which might have resulted into the file system simply writing empty files to the disk.

A reason for properly closing programs and shutting down a computer. Forced shutdowns are very, very bad. Both for data (corruption) and hardware (sudden power loss) and can cause serious damage. Overheating system parts are even worse. If these shutdowns happen regularly you might have already damaged the system beyond repair.

im sure another thread on here said the eula is related to file permissions being incorrect. so it cant save the data that says you already agreed. its your pc doing this.

Ok, after a lot of failed attempts at solving this I stumbled upon something. I noticed my screenshots were not saving correctly either and checking ingame it displayed a different path than the usual one - instead pointing at my C-drive (ESO and Steam are on my D-drive). For some reason ESO has partly installed itself on my C-drive in the hidden ProgramData folder. The new path to my addons is now: C:\ProgramData\Elder Scrolls Online\live\AddOns (whilst the game still remains on D-drive). Copying my addons there let ESO detect them all just fine.

To get my UserSettings back to normal I had to 1) overwrite with a copy and 2) copy over the SavedVariable folder. It took several minutes to even load into Character Selection, but it is all working and restored now. I am writing this hoping it might help someone else in the same situation.

Is this something I should perhaps report to Support?
