Technically we have spears with the Adriatic spear line.

As for a weapon like it wouldn’t be like what OP has described. A spear and shield line indicates tanking so it would and should have lower dps.

Regardless, I cannot recall a spear as a weapon in TES. Might have missed it or drawing a blank.

Single player Morrowind had spears. And staffs that weren't strictly magic dispensers. They had stats for chop, slash, and thrust damage. I do remember the Ebony staff had the highest enchant points, even higher than daedric, in the game.

    Hey,

Would be awesome if we could equipable spears (one-handers) and get a spear weapon skill line.

I used to wield a spear and shield in the old days...long ago... last time was as a member of the sacred band of thebes, but nvm this.

as long as the sheogorath spears is added as a skin/relic weapon. "spear of bitter mercy" o morrowind... how i miss thee.

There aren't any technical limitations preventing it. If ZOS can add new emots to the crown store, they can add new combat animations. It is just a matter of time and effort that is needed.

That sounds like a flimsy excuse. What would have changed between early development and now that they can't add new weapon types?
But I'm sure he's aware players want this, as it's an often requested feature. Frankly ESO needs something more juicy like this, all we got this year was jewelry crafting and that's hardly game-changing.
I mean, he literally could have just said "We have no plans to add new weapon types at this time." Or even, "That's not something that I can talk about right now" -- I'm pretty sure he actually did say that to some questions.

I want spears too, you guys. But I'm sure you'll forgive me for taking the word of the creative director over yours on the engine limitations.

Spears and flails are two weapon types that video game designers tend to struggle with. Gameplay designers tend to not know how to make spears compelling to use, and flails have long been a nightmare to animate.

Spears also tend to be at the bottom of the list of weapons that appear in fantasy in general, which unfortunately also helps to exclude spears from fantasy video games.

...tho I guess it IS true enough that most "hero" types wield a sword in fantasy stories. Occasionally a bow. Sometimes a axe... but the pokey sticks are more often then not something for the second rank characters...

Go outside the Fighters Guild in Skywatch, Auridon. There are npc's there using spears. The animations are there (obviously for the templar skill). Wouldn't be hard to add a skill line. Would basically be like melee staves.

Also, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to see a barefisted skill line. We see some khajiit on Khenarthi's roost doing what clearly looks like martial arts. And we see our characters do fancy jump kicks to break crystals in numerous quests. Be fun to lay a physical beat down on enemies like that. Perhaps add knuckle weapons to the mix?
