Really depends on what you're looking to do. Tanking setups are really flexible outside of veteran trials.

For vet dungeons, I run Tavas, Dragon, and Potentates so I can cast warhorns that cost 193 ulti. Some people like to use Werewolf Hide, some people like Alkosh. Inexperienced people choose to go with more selfish and easily acquired tanking sets such as Hist Bark and Whitestrakes.

Your setup sounds fine for a learning tank. Just get your feet wet with tanking and get a grasp of tanking mechanics before you worry about sets.

Dragongaurd is pretty standard... You might want Ebon instead of Plague doctor.
The monster set is typically bloodspawn.

Just make sure to go PVP to grab warhorn and you are good.

Like others have said, its all about what you want to Tank and how you like to tank, what your playstyle is like.

I personally run Torugs Pact and Ebon Armory, with 1p Shadowrend and 1p Chokethorn for monster set. But I do change things up for some Trials and some fights. For example with the testing I have done in the new Trial on PTS, you need significantly more health than what I normally use so I had to swap to Plague Doctor for that fight.

More selfish? What a prick of a thing to say. Not everybody has high end dropped gear.

I think what he means by selfish is gear that has self utility but no group utility. Ambiguously worded.

There are two kinds of tanks. Those that can hold aggro and survive, and those that can do those things and debuff the boss, buff the group, and protect the group.

Like @pelle412 said when someone says that the Tank is wearing a Selfish set that means its a set that only effects them. Black Rose would be a good example of a Selfish set, it gives you more resource management but over that it does nothing for the group. While say Ebon Armory will be giving more Max Health to the entire group, that is a non selfish set. So don't get your Jimmies rustled over phrasing.

Look, basic tanking is about staying alive and keeping the boss aggroed. For that, regular gear is fine. Wear whatever you want.

Good tanking is staying alive, keeping the boss aggroed, crowd control, debuffs, and group buffs. Trials tanking is all that and more.

The OP asked for better options. Gear that buffs the group is going to be better than gear that only buffs the tank. That's why Ebon Armory is preferred over options like Plague Doctor's and Whitestrake's Retribution. Plague Doctor's and Whitestrake's are both effective sets for a tank, but they are definitely inferior for the tank's group when compared to Ebon Armory. I myself used both of them while I was learning to tank, but I ultimately switched to Ebon Armory because it was the better choice for the groups I tank for.

    My advice:
I run normal and vet dungeons, not trials. I also don't run a group that uses warhorn, so ultimate generation is not a priority. If it is, then the bloodspawn/Tava's combo is excellent.

I recommend wearing a tank set and a set that fits your playstyle. Then, a monster helm that fits how you like to play.

Good tank sets: Histbark (crafted, gives evasion), Whitestrake (crafted, gives a damage shield), Akaviri Dragonknight (drops in Eastmarch, reduced ultimate cost and resource return), Tava's (Crafted, good ultimate regen), Footman's Fortune (drops from Dragonstar Arena, block increased), Plague Doctor (drops from Deshaan, max health), and Ebon Armory (max health+health for group members)

I'm sure others will have more suggestions. I switched from Plague Doctor to Ebon Armory and my regular group appreciates it while I've had no difference between the two. If you can't get Ebon Armory yet and you need the extra health, I suggest Plague Doctor or Whitestrakes. Either is very nice when you are the last one standing and have to rez the healer in a pug group. Do not use Ebon Armory on weapons because the buff resets on bar swapping. I can't remember if they fixed that on Plague doctor too.

After that, find something that fits how you play. Plague Doctor+green pact is a high health build. I've used worm's raiment, BSW, and Knightmare at one time or another. If you want to do trials, ask your group what they want you to wear.

    Monster Helms
Bloodspawn if ultimate regen is your focus, i.e. warhorn
Swarm Mother if crowd control is your thing. You need the inner fire or ice staff taunt to taunt ranged adds and then block so that you pull them to you.
Helms that increase resistances: Mighty Chudan, Lord Warden, etc. I pull out these on harder vet dungeons if I'm not confident in my knowledge of the boss mechanics.
I normally use Grothdarr's for extra DPS on trash mobs and I'm usually in range for it to hit the boss as well.

Phrasing matters. My first tank kit was Willow's Path + Hist Bark + Werewolf. It was not because I was selfish. It was because it was a good build at the time for someone who didn't have dropped gear. Today I have the option of Plague Doctor + Ebon, then I didn't. Just because someone's not running Ebon doesn't mean you can assume they're selfish.

That's used. Tanks have a number of sets they use and what they wear dependent on the content and what the other tank is wearing.

Ebon is pretty much a constant with vet trials. Especially progression.

I don't think you really understand what people mean with selfish set up.... Selfish set up=/=selfish player. I mean you are playing tank for F sake, you are a support role, an inherently selfless role.

My set up that I like the best so far is willows with plague doctor...

Easier dungeons I use engine guardian
Harder content I use Lord warden
