Well, that IS a good point. I suppose my complete lack of luck is good for something after all, except they refuse to sell the stuff I'd buy if they'd sell it. Sigh. At any rate the money I save not buying crown crates is ready in case they ever decide to release another mount I just cannot live without.

Exactly. If they made everything buyable with Crowns, I'd breakout my credit card and make some purchases.

I agree.
When they inroduced the first free crate event,I expected the chances to be tuned up - you know, to make people buy more. But apparently the drop rate is pretty much the same as in normal crates.
Still, I think that free stuff is always nice, even if its just a mask or pet. Last time I got a bunch of nix hounds and that gave me enough gems to buy a hairstyle I really liked... Thats still something I suppose.

My rng doesn't have that effect, got a dwemer camel from the last round of freebies, but fortunately I have everyone else's rng to keep me from buying them. That, and the all but confirmed 2% drop rate measured by addons that aggregate users' drop data.

I allow myself to buy one 15-pack of crown crates per theme and I have to say the dwarven crates were terrible rng. I even waited until a few days ago since I had read people were unhappy with rng and I wanted to give ZOS a chance to make any necessary fixes. Man, what a huge disappointment. I literally got ONE purple out of the bunch and it was a stupid xp scroll (why is this even considered a purple quality item) and I got AT LEAST SIX nix hounds. That is just too hard to believe. This really needs to be addressed and at least efforts need to be made to make people feel like it is a truly fair system.

It seems like people either have amazing luck or terrible luck. I'm wondering if doing something like relogging between opening would reset the rng seed. If you're getting trash then relog. If you're doing great then stick with it.

I read stories like this, and watch videos of 100 crates being opened and it's like ya...no thanks. It's rather insulting to tell you the truth.

I got a body tattoo, and some sort of red lip marking for khajiits. But in my first crate I got a sheogorath statue for housing (which I don't use), and i was allowed to trade it in for 33 gems.

I will say I don't understand the logic zenimax is going for here though. Like menedhyn said, it really is an anti sale campaign.... Typically with things like these, the distributor will purposely make you get something pretty good from a free sample, so you get a taste, get hooked, and want to keep coming back for more, hoping to get another good thing.

But in this crown crate situaction, I have no idea what they're doing. And those nix hound jokes aren't even jokes, I got nix hounds in all of my last free crates...

I was thinking the same. I just opened my 3 free crates and got some lip gloss colours I'm never going to use because they remove existing markings from the character, which makes them look weird and not at all like themselves, and some consumables which I'll use because I use whatever random consumables I get so I may as well.

Yes it's free so there's no reason to complain, but it does seem rather backwards for ZOS to send out a nice little reminder that these crates very rarely drop anything but junk and it's really not worth considering spending any money on them. I assume the 'freebie' was intended to do the exact opposite and tempt us into buying more.

And all the while they're also losing money from me and apparently several other people who would happily purchase these items if they were sold in the crown store.

I suppose they must make enough from the handful of people gullible enough to believe they're going to beat the odds to justify carrying on doing it, but it is frustrating to see all the nice things I'd happily buy locked behind an absurd RNG mechanic.

I have to assume this is exactly what's happening, otherwise they would be experimenting with other options, or listening to us.

Guess my luck has been good got the Dark Brotherhood costume, crow motif and Ghost Panther pet with my free crates.....come to think of it I do pretty good in the crate to decent stuff ratio.

If they made everything purchasable with Crowns and also offered Crown Crates they would make more money. People would still buy crates hoping for a better deal because you have 4-5 chances per crate and some just enjoy gambling. Others would finally be able to buy only what they want. Win, win...everybody happy.

I would have been quite happy about the motif tbh, at least something useful. All i got were two costumes ( like most, they are fugly and nobody in their right mind will ever use them...at least spend some effort on this stuff ZOS ) and a few consumables.

But then on the other hand 200 gems can cost up to 200$ or more if your super unlucky, just whatever you value more real $ or fake gold

Someone in my guild got it to, it's bop, so might have not that big impact on prices...

I got blue lips and the rest I converted into the gems.
Last batch of free crates I got a mechanical guar mount and converted the rest into gems.
So I have a growing stack of gems that one day I can use.

Why complain about "free stuff" ?

Question, the DB costume is pretty common, I assume we should open crates one the main crafter so we get gems.

Only crown crates I've ever opened were free ones. Most of those have been turned into gems, only because I didn't know about gems before that. I would have turned 100% of items I received into gems.

Totally agree! The free gamble crates just reinforced my resistance to buying more of them, or just about anything else TBH, from the crown store. I got a bunch of potions, scrolls, and some janky body art. I must be completely be missing the point of wanting body art as typically the armor and most costumes that I have seen just cover them up. There are a few items I would save up for to buy in the crown store but gamble crates, at a couple of bucks a pop, NO WAY!

I got the Plague Husk Horse on my first free crate; I got one of the Wild Hunt mounts on my 10th crate last season. RNG is RNG.
