I am *** in lockpicking.
Let me admit that.
Here I am trying to enjoy the zonal story in Bangkorai and this stupid lockpicking is mandatory to open a stupid house.
Now I am stuck and cant progress in that story.

I think it's fine. Whilst it can be hard to pick there is always the force lock function that will eventually succeed.

You can also train legerdemain to get these to work almost every time, there is also PC add-ons which give you the pin positions to make it even easier.

I don't have a problem with lock-picking ifor the reason the OP gives. However, I do hate the fact that some important quests in festival events and even now in Morrowind demand trespassing and thieving although often only partway through the quest. That's a nuisance for those of us with characters that don't engage in such activities - like my holy paladin type templar - but the actual process of lock-picking isn't an issue in itself. All you have to remember is that there are only 3 positions the tumbler can end in, it's not like it has to be pixel perfect. Once you hit the position where it starts to jiggle then release it and start again knowing the position you're aiming for.

Takes 5 seconds to pick a master lock anyways, even less time for forcing locks.

Not in any way difficult imo.

Is this some kind of joke? In the rare event that I actually fail the lockpicking mini-game on a Master chest, I consider it an embarrassment. That’s how ridiculously easy it is. It’s so easy, half the time I can predict exactly when one of the springs are going to start shaking before they even do.

So in short, no it’s not bad design. Obviously people are going to lock their doors if they don’t want some guy just barging in there. Or is that some kind of foreign concept to you?

you've been around long enough that you've created like 350 threads on here yet you still have issues picking a lock in the game? after all this time you still cant manage it? time for a new game

and whats with the poll options. wheres the option that says this is a stupid poll and lockpicking is an acceptable part of the game.

Are you also mad when you get "excluded" from content because you can't beat a npc? You know that's how most games work right? You have to beat a part of the game to further progress and when you can't beat it you can't progress.

Maybe you should rather watch movies, you can even fall asleep and the movie will go on just fine without you.

I think some people are being unnecessarily mean to OP in this thread... some people DO find it difficult.... I know older people struggle, some people may have some minor mental disability or maybe even arthritis or something, whatever the reason someone finds lock picking a challenge for doesn't warrant them being told to find a new game or get their child neighbour round to do it or learn to play whatever whatever...

I know for the longest time when I first started playing I literally got through 80 lockpicks on a simple lock, haha! Now I can do masters in a flash with my eyes shut.

Anyways, OP, my advice would be to stock up on picks and just keep forcing locks until it will eventually open for you.

If you are on console turn vibration on, it will aid with learning how to do it.

As for the actual question, I like having a mini game like lock picking within a quest, makes it more of an interactive quest rather than just click to read dialogue quest.

It's been an integral part of every TES game I've played so far, and would hate to see it go. I had some trouble with it at first as it is a little different from both Oblivion and Skyrim, but with a little bit of practice I managed get the hang of it and I'm sure you can too. ;) If it really bothers you, just buy a couple hundred lockpicks (they're dirt-cheap) and force the lock.

There are fairly easy, no risk ways to raise Legerdemain, like plundering the two boats in Daggerfall. This will increase your succes with bashing locks. Just have to keep an eye on your lockpick supply: for some reason you can't bash without one.

You can level your ledgerman skills to max without ever having to pick a lock. Just steal a bunch of items value of them doesn't matter sell and launder. The lock picking perk gets maxed at about level 16.Put 2 points in it and you can almost always pop a simple lock.

Most quest related locks are not even of the advanced variety. There's generally enough time to accidentally get it right before the timer expires, granted you have enough picks.

I'm happy to lockpick my way through every day, any day: most of my characters are better at picking locks than at fighting (because I picked a ton of locks in Oblivion with a similar design, and I'm clumsy and stressed as hell when it comes to fighting).

Luckily you can always try to force the lock. Just make sure you have plenty of lockpicks!

Just level up legerdemain, you'll have a very high chance to force any locks. You can level it by stealing everything and selling it to a fence or laundering (the items dont have to be expensive, even stealing food ingredients in a guard-less place will work).
Its very useful, not just for this quest. If you get the passive, you wont need to skip treasure chests anymore. :)

I was running with a friend last night, and he is struggling with lock picking. It, and furnishings, gave me an idea. They should create a furnishing chest designed to let people practice picking locks. The difficulty could maybe be randomized, there's nothing in it, and it doesn't advance any skill lines (could most likely still consume picks, since those are all over), but does allow someone to learn to pick a lock without the stress of someone "sniping" a chest in the open world.

I have no idea if this is possible, but it would be a nice, functional furnishing.
